Every portrait I've seen done by Danielle is full of so much message. I don't know how she does it, but somehow she uses her camera lens to drop the veil. It's no surprise that her workshops have a similar affect on the women who partake in them. Danielle is a co-found of Amulet Magazine.

"I have to be honest. I'm feeling a little raw and scattered today."

That's how my conversation with Danielle Cohen started. And if I know one thing about being brave, it's that you *have* to start where you're at. So that's where we start today's episode with the brilliant photographer, matriarch, mom of 4, and creative powerhouse that is Danielle Cohen.

  • 029: Growing Up in Foster Care & Busting the Myth of "The Starving Artist" with BRIDGETTE MAYER
You guys. Bridgette Mayer is here on the podcast today. If you're not in the visual art scene then she might not be on your radar. That is until today.

To say Bridgette had a rough early childhood is an extreme understatement. She is a product of the New Jersey foster care system and has some horrifying stories to share about what that was like. Fortunately for her (and us) she was adopted by a wonderful family who helped to completely change the way her life has unfolded.

In today's episode she and I talk about the role fear has played in her success. We talk about the importance of our decisions and attitude. She tells us a little about why her industry frustrated her and how she has strived to create a new version of it for herself and the artists she represents.

We also get to talking about the myth and reality of "The Starving Artist" and how our mindset and asking the right questions play a role in how we can begin to do things uniquely. And if you're an artist (visual, musical, or otherwise) you'll want to listen towards the end when she and I talk about the big beast of self-promotion and how we can overcome our social anxiety.

    Okay! Let's jump on in!

    Brave Take-Aways
For some reason I was intrigued by Bridgette's encouragement to seek out feedback. So your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to take some serious steps towards receiving a new kind of feedback.

What area of your life or business have you been trying to "get better at?" Who feels like a safe person to give you some honest feedback? Your challenge today is to seek out that feedback. Either via email, social media, or by way of grabbing some coffee. I really want to encourage you to find a new kind of feedback about the bravery you're putting out into the world.

Bridgette and I would love to hear all about your favorite parts of today's Bare Naked Bravery. You can find Bridgette Mayer and myself on facebook, twitter, instagram, and more. Go ahead and tag us so we can cheer you on and see what you're up to.

In today's shownotes you'll also find a link to purchase Bridgette's book "The Art Cure" (http://amzn.to/2ghghR3) It's a quick, beautiful, and insightful glimpse into more of her story. Those show notes can be found by going to barenakedbravery.com

    Trigger Warning...
Before we get into the show today, I want to make a special note that this episode has a myriad of triggers inside it. If you're listening to this with your kiddos, be prepared to have a serious conversation afterwards. Not only does it contain subject matter that isn't for all ages, but even as an adult I needed to take the rest of the afternoon off after stopping the recording.

So please take this as a reminder to care for yourself and the people around you. Period, but especially as you listen to Marie's story.

Marie Schaeller is an author from eastern Pennsylvania hoping to raise awareness of child sexual abuse in our communities and what we can do about it. Her first book is titled "Breaking the Chains of Silence" and is just one facet of these efforts to advocate for victims of this tragedy which unfortunately occurs in every community. In her own community, Marie has assisted in attempts to get the Pennsylvania House Bill 1947 passed. This bill would stop allowing predators to get a "time out" of justice, which as Marie explains later, would greatly benefit child victims later in life.

Marie has graciously offered listeners of the show a free copy of Chapter 13 in her book. It details how she turned the pain of losing a mentor into joining a writing class. Through this class she met her tribe and gained a powerful sense of community with writers of all ages, education, and background. Writing has truly helped me to wrap my head around some hurdles and heartbreak over the years, and I feel blessed for meeting these talented writers.

Marie's hope is to let survivors know they are NOT alone and that there are ways to move forward. That is my hope as well and it's the reason why I chose to feature such a triggering story like Marie's.

It's important to remember that Bravery is not always made of bright & shiny unicorns and fairy dust. Bravery also exists in extreme darkness and the fresh hell that is sometimes forced upon us.

I urge you to listen closely. If you heard what I hear in Marie Schaeller's story, then you will walk away a braver more beautiful citizen and community member.

    Brave Take-Aways
An update on House Bill 1947, as of 1/24/2017
Before we close out today's show, here's an update from Marie Schaeller on the Pennsylvania House Bill 1947. She says, "Unfortunately, the bill after being gutted in the Senate returned to the House of Representatives, but never made it out of the Rules Committee to get to the floor for a vote. There were other issues that overshadowed it, like the Opioid Crisis and Pension Reform. The session closed without it being voted on.

PA House of Rep. Mark Rozzi has a plan to reintroduce the bill this legislative session in 2017 and pick up where last year left off. He will not give up. This is personal for him and he can relate to survivors. He was abused by a priest when he was younger as well as some of his friends- one of which committed suicide.

The new Attorney General that was voted in agrees that the retroactivity part of the bill IS constitutional. That was the main complaint of the Senate when they gutted it. Having the Attorney General support the bill is hopeful!

Here is an article that sums up the bill and end of session." - Marie Schaeller

She gave me an article that sums up the bill, which is linked in the show notes of this episode. Also in the shownotes as I mentioned earlier is Chapter 13 of her book.

We'd love to hear all about your most meaningful parts of today's Bare Naked Bravery. You can find Marie Schaeller and myself on facebook, twitter, instagram, and more. Go ahead and tag us so we can cheer you on and see what you're up to.

  • ps007: The Voices of The 2017 Women's March - Part 2
If you've been following my latest journey via email or Instagram, you'll know that am not in the Pacific Northwest, like I have been for the past 10 years. I am currently in Atlanta, GA on a several month-long sabbatical. I'm here taking care of my grandfather, spending time with my Southern branch of family, and finishing up my long-awaited and upcoming book and album.

This is why on Saturday, January 21st I found myself walking the streets of Downtown Atlanta with about 63,000 other people. We were all participating in the Women's March. Over 600 cities around the world held similar marches spanning in numbers from tens of people to just under one million people. The final tally of numbers are still rolling in as I'm recording this.

If you're a long-time listener of the show, you'll know that sometimes I publish bonus episodes alongside our weekly interview episodes. I like to call these bonus episodes "Peep Shows" because they're a peep behind the curtain of the kind of bravery I'm personally encountering on a day-to-day basis. Today is no exception to that.
