On this episode of Baring It All with Call Me Adam, I chat with Mary Lane Haskell who you know from portraying Dolly Parton's childhood school teacher "Miss Moody" in Dolly's NBC TV movies Coat of Many Colors & Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Life. What you might not know is that Mary Lane is a 30 year old woman who suffered a stroke just months before the global pandemic.

Mary Lane has been an actress ever since her star turn as "homeless child" in a Disney Channel Original Movie when she was 5 years old. The rest is history. Her proudest professional achievement to date is her Carnegie Hall debut at 18 years old, singing alongside mentor and friend Michael Feinstein and long time idol Elaine Stritch. She's sure she peaked early, but hopes to prove herself wrong.

When she's not busy playing pretend, Mary Lane teaches musical theater classes at The Debbie Allen Dance Academy, writes a blog called The Displaced Debutante, and drives Lyft in the greater Los Angeles area which continues to mortify her grandmother. But mostly, Mary Lane is just #grateful that residuals from TV gigs such as NBC’s Law and Order: SVU and ABC’s Scandal continue to financially support her frozen yogurt habit, and is hopeful that her appearance as "Miss Moody" in NBC’s award winning Coat of Many Colors and Emmy nominated Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love will ensure that she can add guac to her to Chipotle order for years to come.

She performed as “Elphaba” in Wicked on Broadway, previously seen starring in the role on the 1st National Tour. Donna has been on a Broadway stage since the age of 8; she was the original “Young Cosette” in Les Miserables on Broadway and on the cast recording. She starred on Broadway in Fame Becomes Me with Martin Short and was also on Broadway in Hairspray and Saturday Night Fever. Janet Dacal is a Los Angeles native, has an extensive career in music and theater. Her musical influences range in genres, finding inspiration from the likes of Sarah Vaughan to Celia Cruz. Her music career began under the wing of Grammy-winning artist Gloria Estefan, recording background vocals on a number of her albums. Other artists she’s worked with include Ricky Martin, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, and Marc Anthony. Following her time with the Estefans, Janet toured the world with Grammy-winning Latin recording artist, Luis Enrique.

Prior to the Broadway shutdown Janet was starring as "Dina" in the National Tour of the 10-time Tony Award Winning Musical, The Bands Visit. She has starred in several Broadway productions in NYC, most recently Prince of Broadway, directed by the one and only Hal Prince. She played multiple roles in the production including, "Eva Peron" in Evita, "The Spiderwoman, Aurora" in Kiss of The Spiderwoman, and "Sydney" in It's A Bird, It's A Plane, It's Superman. Janet starred in the Tony and Grammy Award Winning hit In The Heights. After having originated the role of "Carla" in the original Off-Broadway and Broadway productions, for which she received a Drama Desk Award, she took over the title role of "Nina Rosario." She then starred as "Alice," in Frank Wildhorn’s musical Wonderland. She appears in the original cast recordings of all three musicals, Prince of Broadway, In The Heights and Wonderland.

Janet has had the great pleasure to perform in renowned establishments such as Birdland and The Apollo Theatre in NYC. Favorite television appearances include, The Tony Awards and White Collar. She has been nominated with Carbonell Awards for her work in the productions, The Last 5 Years and Five Course Love.

We had so much fun that day and not enough time, so I’m bringing her back for an extended conversation.

In this episode of Baring It All with Call Me Adam, I am chatting with gay singer/songwriter Tommy Boi, whose latest single "Blessing In Disguise" has just been released. We have a great time talking about making music, coming out, finding love and support, and so much more!

Tommy Boi is a pop artist hailing from Sacramento, California. As a proud gay musician living in California, the night life in San Diego, Weho, and the Castro District has been a huge influence on both his pesonal style and musical career. Tommy Boi’s sound is reminiscent of pop icons like Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, and Nick Jonas, while he is heavily inspired by pop queens like Ariana Grande, Shania Twain, Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, and Tove Lo.

Tommy Boi started taking piano lessons and sang in his church at just 7 years old. At 19 years old, he auditioned for American Idol, after he was cut, Nicki Minaj gave him invaluable advice to never quit and to keep honing his craft. Tommy took this advice to heart and focused on writing more songs and learned how to record. At the age of 21, while attending a Christian university, Tommy fell in love for the first time. He wrote the single “Glue” about his first relationship and later that year came out to his family. Tommy feared the rejection and judgement from his family and community, but his parents were very supportive of him and reminded him that he was their son over everything. After graduating in 2015 with a scholarship and music degree at 22, he moved to Los Angeles to write and record more new music. Tommy struggled with money and couch surfed for the first few months in Los Angeles to make his dream a reality. Five months after moving to Los Angeles, Tommy got into a major car accident and had to move back home with nine months of recovery and a huge obstacle to overcome in his personal life and musical career. 

In 2017, he came out as gay publicly and started releasing music under his stage name Tommy Boi. He released his first single “Found Again,” and began building up his music career with multiple successful singles. In 2018, he released “Glue” and “Holiday,” which told his story of moving to Los Angeles and escaping the past. Tommy Boi has performed at the Santa Barbara Pride Festival in 2019 and the Breaking Pride Event at the Peppermint Club with other queer pop icons like Michael Medrano and Davy Boi. His biggest single, “You Never Called Back,” recently hit one million streams on Apple Music and 800,000 on Spotify. 

Tommy’s journey to pursue music as a career has shaped him into the person and writer he is today. He hopes to encourage his audience to live freely and openly as their true selves, and inspire people to stay positive and hopeful during hard times. Tommy Boi is currently working on a new EP project including his newest single, “Blessing In Disguise,” an inspirational pop ballad in support of the LGBTQ community.

He recorded his debut solo album of Songs From Inside My Locker live in front of two sold-out audiences in 2019; the album was released to rave reviews in June 2020. He also created and hosted Tuesdays at 54…with Robbie Rozelle!, which ran for seven months at Feinstein’s/54 Below in 2019-2020. He co-hosts the podcast Gay Card Revoked with Robert W. Schneider.

For three years, Robbie served as the graphic designer and creative director for Playbill, culminating in the design of the branding of #PlaybillPride, a 30-day initiative of the LGBT movement in the theatre that included a redesign of their historic logo for the month of June 2014, which continues each June to this day. He currently serves as the A&R Director and in-house designer for Grammy-winning record label Broadway Records, where he designed the iconic "What the World Needs Now is Love" in response to Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando. He also runs Ghostlight Design.
