Hey Hey Hey Bookshelvers!

So here it is episode #1 of our 'Off The Shelf' series.

This one we have entitled " Bear, Horse, Wolf" and it features Carrie-Anne Selwyn, Corrin Goodall (and Steve) with our very own Natalie Light talking about their personal journeys rehoming thier dogs Dodge, Drax and Peaches (who all happen to be pretty darn HUGE).

We talk about how we ended up making the decision to rehome, how we approach the (massively underrated) management that is essential for building trust and preventing problems as well as what we have all learned from these experiences.

We are all great friends so expect some banter and giggles along the way.

Natalie Light Bio
I am an Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB) accredited Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist, an Animal Behaviour & Training Council (ABTC) Registered Clinical Animal Behaviourist and Animal Training Instructor and a full member of both the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and Fellowship of Animal Behaviour Clinicians. I have been working professionally in the companion animal sector since 2006 and have graduated from Southampton University with a Zoology BSc (2:1) and Newcastle University in Applied Animal Behaviour & Welfare PGDip (Distinction).

My aim as a behaviourist and trainer is to provide my clients with the understanding, knowledge and practical skills to confidently identify, manage and reinforce behaviours in order to have a safe and happy life with their dog.

I believe that by focussing on the dog/human relationship and encouraging effective and appropriate communication, we can live with our dogs more successfully.

Corrin Goodall Bio
Corrin Goodall has been working with dogs for the last 5 years. She had always had a love for dogs and that passion grew with her studies with the IMDT (Institute of Modern Dog trainers) and gained a level 4 with the OCN (Open College Network).

Both Corrin and Steve regularly attend conferences, workshops and lectures to continue to stay up to date with the latest information available so they can offer the best methods on to their clients.

Corrin is a Full member of the Association of INTO Dogs.

You will also find Corrin listed with The International Companion Animal Network (ICAN) . Bringing together reputable organisations who use, teach and recommend only force free methods in working with animals.

Carrie-anne Selwyn Bio
Carrie-Anne Selwyn is the founder of Canine Hoopers World an International dog trainer and unicorn handler!
 Canine Hoopers World was created to bring the inclusive activity of hoopers to dogs around the globe. Combining a series of hoops, barrels and tunnels, dogs and their handlers work together as a team to navigate the obstacles. Build confidence whilst working in partnership to have fun.
Carrie also has her own podcast called 'Canine Hoopers World'.

Steve and Nat are back for another episode. When we started our journey as dog trainers there was one particular book that really spoke to both of us. 'The Other End Of The Leash: Why we do what we do around dogs' is quite simply a masterpiece and we are still pinching ourselves from this one. We had the ABSOLUTE pleasure of talking to Patricia about her career as one of the most influential writers of dog training books in the world. As well as delving into this MUST OWN book. We have the welcome return of 'practical applications' this week as well as hearing all about what we've been up to in lockdown UK.

Patricia McConnell Bio

Patricia McConnell, PhD, a Zoologist and Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, (CAAB) Emeritus has made a lifelong commitment to improving the relationship between people and animals. She is known worldwide as an expert on canine and feline behavior and dog training, and for her engaging and knowledgeable dog training books, DVDs and seminars. Patricia has seen clients for serious behavioral problems since 1988, and taught "The Biology and Philosophy of Human/Animal Relationships” for twenty-five years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her radio show, Calling All Pets, was heard in over 110 cities around the country, where Patricia dispensed advice about behavior problems and animal behavior research for over fourteen years.

A highly-sought after speaker on dog behavior and training, McConnell has presented seminars all over the United States, and in Canada, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Belgium, Scotland and New Zealand.

She is the author of the much-acclaimed books The Other End of the Leash (which is now published in 13 languages), For the Love of A Dog: Understanding Emotions in You and Your Best Friend and Tales of Two Species. Patricia has two dogs, one confident cat and a very spoiled flock of sheep on a small farm in Southwestern Wisconsin. Her Border Collie, Maggie, along with Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Tootsie, keep her outside and active, and the memories of her beloved Border Collie Willie keep her humble. Trisha suffers from Separation Anxiety each time she leaves her dogs on her numerous speaking engagements around the country.

It's a Social Distancing special this time around on BFTBS! So distant we thought we'd try interview someone in Manchester!

Jane Ardern's new book Mission Control is a must for anyone who is interested in training "high drive" breeds or simply any dog geeks out there. The whole book is crammed full of fabulous explanations of emotional states and in-depth step by step exercises to engage and bond build and allow you to unlock that special team work you have always wanted.

As a caveat Nat and I had only read a wee bit of Jane's book when we spoke to her (using the Pandemic as a very reasonable excuse) but since then I have finished it and even implemented some of it into my online classes. It is very good and VERY practical. An all round BFTBS MUST HAVE!!!

We travel slightly "off piste" in the main body of the show as we decide to focus on some Corona specific difficulties we may all be having during the intro. As we are all not in the same room the audio is a wee bit under par so apologies for that ;)

Jane Ardern Bio

Jane Ardern BSc (Hons) Dip.CABT is a leading dog trainer and behaviourist in the UK, who specialises in issues concerning working and performance dogs. Recognised as a hands-on realist, Jane combines an academic background with extensive practical experience as an ‘in the trenches’ trainer. In 2016 she was Kennel
Club Dog Trainer of the Year.

In 2012 Jane graduated with an honours degree in canine behaviour and training from Hull University, achieving the highest grade ever given in the advanced instructing module. She was invited to return to the university to teach on the foundation degree course, and went on to study for a level 3 award in education and training. She was also given recognised teacher status up to level 6 in canine related subjects. Jane has lectured for COAPE, the internationally course provider for animal behaviourists.

Jane owns WaggaWuffins Canine College, which provides puppy, pet dog training and a practical instructor training programme. She provides online support through a membership community for other enthusiasts and professionals and is the creator of Smart Pup, a puppy training subscription box. Jane is a member of the Professional Speaking Association (PSA) and has spoken at seminars and events all over the UK.

Jane says she has learned the most when knee-deep in mud in a wood full a pheasants, rabbit and deer, applying the classroom theory to the real world. Her mission is to help people who are looking for a positive and ethical solution to problems around excitement, arousal, drive and predatory behaviour.

OH MY DAYS BOOKSHELVERS!

Never meet your heroes they say... well Barks from the Bookshelf say a big BOO to that.

This episode features the one and only Jean Donaldson. Jean doesn't really require an introduction. She is a burning light in the Dog Training Community. It was our absolute honour to talk with Jean and we really hope you all enjoy it.

Jean's Bio

Jean is one of the top dog trainers in the world and has lectured extensively in the US, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. She is a four-time winner of The Dog Writers’ Association of America’s Maxwell Award, and her seminal book The Culture Clash was named number one training and behavior book by The Association of Pet Dog Trainers. Her other titles are Mine! A Guide to Resource Guarding in Dogs, Fight! A Guide to Dog-Dog Aggression, Dogs Are From Neptune, and Oh Behave! Dogs From Pavlov to Premack to Pinker.

Her most recent book, Train Like a Pro, was her first written training guide for a lay audience.  In 2018, Jean authored and instructed Dog Training 101 for The Great Courses, another resource for dog guardians.

Before transitioning full-time to pet dog training, Jean competed in dog sports with dogs of various breeds, earning numerous titles and wins including OTCh, HIT, TDX, and FDCh, as well as a CGC. She ran a successful training school for fifteen years, and spent six years doing primarily referral aggression cases. She holds a degree in comparative psychology and is a keen student of evolutionary biology.

We recorded this podcast a few weeks ago before the real Covid 19 horror show hit. We sincerely hope everyone is coping out there and doing all they can to keep themselves, their loved ones and the entire planet safe. We hope this goes some way to making these uncertain time a tiny bit easier.

Welcome, Welcome and Welcome Bookshelvers!

Here we are at episode 5 of Barks from the Bookshelf :)

This one was a real pleasure to record! Steve and Nat get to talk to the bloomin' marvellous Zazie Todd about her book 'Wag: The Science Of Making Your Dog Happy'. What a book. It belongs on shelf of any dog lover in the world and will take you through the hows and whys of keeping those dogs happy from puppy-hood to their Autumn years. A truly accomplished piece of work.

Zazie Todd, Ph.D., has a Ph.D. in Psychology (University of Nottingham) and an MFA Creative Writing (UBC). Her book Wag: The  Science of Making Your Dog Happy will be published in March 2020 by Greystone Books. She is the creator of Companion Animal Psychology, a blog about how to have happy cats and dogs, according to science. Todd won the 2017 Captain Haggerty Award from the  Dog  Writer's Association of America for her article, The Ultimate Dog Training Tip.

Zazie Todd grew up in Leeds, in the north of England, and now lives in Maple Ridge, BC, Canada, with her husband, one dog, and two cats

Howdy Bookshelvers!

In this episode of Barks From The Bookshelf Nat and Steve get to have a good ol' chin waggle with their good buddy Karen Wild

Karen is a force of nature in the Dog World (not to mention other furries). We focus on her awesome Book 'Being a Dog - the world from your dog's point of view'. First published in 2016 this is a truly fact filled book on the subject of what its like to be a dog. Written from the dogs point of view it is charming and a fabulous reference book which you'll end up returning to again and again!

Nat and Steve then delve deep into some of the topics (and there are plenty to pick from) featured in 'Being a Dog'.

Look out for the new segment called The Gregg Wallace Moment and also brace yourselves for when Steve decides to get "sciency" with hilarious results.

Karen Wild:

As part of my commitment to high standards, I am a Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB), Animal Behaviour and Training Council Clinical Animal Behaviourist (ABTC-CAB) and a Full member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) and I am an ABTC (Animal Behaviour and Training Council) Registered Animal Training Instructor I am also a graduate member of the British Psychological Society (MBPsS).

I also qualified as a dog training Instructor (First grade, Honours) with the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers in the days before the APDT even existed and have kept my skills and knowledge up to date ever since attending regular training courses including a recent Certificate of Excellence from Dr Susan Friedman’s Living and Learning with Animals course.

I write on dog behaviour and training for Dogs Today, Pet Product Marketing, PETS International, Dogs Monthly, Pet Gazette and Pet Focus. I have written three best-selling books on training and behaviour, published by Hamlyn, translated into several languages worldwide. I’m also a guest blog writer for Dr Ian Dunbar’s revolutionary website, Dog Star Daily.

I also lecture on Behaviour practice, practical training and consultation for the Professional Diploma for Clinical Animal Behaviour at Central College for Animal Studies (CCOAS) and was guest instructor for Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, U.K. I speak regularly on this same subject in webinars and seminars, most recently in Dublin, Ireland and Shrewsbury, Shropshire and addressed the APBC Annual Conference in 2014.

Over the years my work has ranged from class teaching, obedience, flyball, agility and working trials competition to running a popular dog display team. Nat gets the chance to introduce Steve and talk to the author of one of her all time favourite dog training books 'The Art of Introducing Dogs' by Louise Ginman. This book is indispensable for any one looking to do dog to dog introductions, be it with a puppy, older or rescue. This episode really looks into the best way to introduce new dogs as well as some of the common pit-falls.

About Louise Ginman

Louise Ginman is a qualified Dog Behavioural Trainer who runs a dog training business 'Positive Dogs' in Sydney, Australia. She has been an Education committee member of APDT Australia Inc. since 2008 and President since 2012. Louise has several qualifications including a Bachelor of Science Degree and Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services. Louise has over 20 years' experience with both domestic and exotic species in both a training and husbandry/management capacity. Louise worked as a veterinary nurse, dog and cat groomer and animal attendant in a busy and large practice in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney for several years before moving to Taronga Zoo to work in the Animal Presentation Unit. She then moved permanently to the Carnivore Unit where she is the Unit Supervisor. Louise's experience in introductions of animals spans 18 years. She has implemented introduction plans and successfully introduced species as diverse as Lions, Tigers, Snow Leopards, Kodiak Bears, Sun Bears, Meerkats, Fennec Fox, Asian Wild Dog, Red Pandas, Otters, Binturong, Malayan Tapir, Fishing Cats and Golden Cats. Dogs have always been Louise's passion and she continues today to educate people about living in harmony with their dog through her writing and pet dog training courses.
