We dive into this amazing book all about the benefits of trick training and crammed full of instructional info on how to get training some pretty amazing tricks.  Sassafras Lowrey is an award-winning author whose books have been honored by organizations ranging from the American Library Association to the Dog Writers Association of America.  Sassafras’ dog books include: Tricks In The City, Healing/Heeling, Bedtime Stories for Rescue Dogs and Chew This Journal: An Activity Book For You And Your Dog forthcoming in December 2020.  Sassafras runs the YouTube channel Introvert Circus and is a Certified Trick Dog Instructor (CTDI). Sassafras  writes and trains in Portland, Oregon.

If you haven't had the pleasure of coming into contact with Lili's work (and you almost certainly have already) Lili is responsible for some of the greatest, cutest, drop dead gorgeous illustrations of dogs on this here planet of ours! Lili's Bio

Lili Chin is an artist who is best known for creating dog-related art. When Lili is not making new illustrations and products to sell, she creates infographics for dog-training professionals, veterinarians, behaviourists and welfare groups who advocate for humane animal-training methods. Her dog body language artwork has been featured in art museums, on television and world-wide educational media campaigns, and her "Dogs of The World" poster series has been a viral hit. Hark Bookshelvers!

It is time to sing like a Samoyed and chuckle like a Chihuahua as it's Off The Shelf time again!

Back just in time for a drastic weather change in the UK Corrin, Nat & Steve get to catch up with their old buddy and all round 'top dude' Jordan Shelley! Jordan is a Dog trainer and behaviour specialist - Animal welfare campaigner - Presenter, producer and writer as well as all that great stuff we all used to chew the proverbials on the "Barking Mad Show" back in the day so it was lovely to catch up and see what Jordan has been up to in his, always interesting, life.

It turns out that amongst other things Jordan has set up a very important petition to Ban the importation of dogs with cropped ears (a worthy cause indeed). In Jordans words: "There appears to be an alarming rise in dogs imported after undergoing the inhumane procedure of having their ears mutilated, fulfilling the desire for a certain ‘look’ & encouraging a procedure outlawed in England since 1899. It’s time to close this 121-year-old legal loophole".

This is a very important cause and we would love if all you Bookshelvers in the UK could sign the petition.

Slap us with a Spaniel Tail we are back for another review episode Bookshelvers!

This week it is the awesome "Office Dogs: The Manual" by Stephanie Rousseau. We caught up with Stephanie for chats and giggles way back in July just before our summer break to go through this small but, absolutely, perfectly put together little gem of a book.
 
 This is also the first episode recorded in Nat's "woofice" whoop whoop so please excuse the interruptions caused by a plethora of birds loitering outside the window. Dogs, japes, tomfoolery and love! BOOM!

Stephanie's Bio
 
Steph is an Irish dog trainer currently residing in Dublin, having previously worked extensively with dogs in London. She is passionate about dog behaviour, and over the past few years has developed a particular interest in facilitating dogs in the human workplace.
 
Steph takes an holistic view in her work with dogs, prioritising their needs foremost. She has completed Turid Rugaas’s IDTE, and sat on the board of the Pet Dog Trainers of Europe (PDTE) between 2017 and 2020.
 
Outside of her work, she enjoys looking after her two dogs, a Greyhound called Fia and an ex-laboratory Beagle cross called Ferdia.

What's going down Bookshelvers?

We hope to find you well in this bizarre time we are all stuck in. What can we say about this episode? Firstly Jessica Pierce is such a wonderful person and we loved the time we spent talking to her about her two amazing books. We genuinely think that "The Last Walk" is a masterpiece and something that everyone, when ready, should read and "Run, Spot, Run" is a real eye opener. Secondly there are some deep and potentially upsetting topics covered. It's not easy talking about the inevitable day our Pets leave us but it is important. We (of course) try to keep it as light hearted as possible but we are sure you understand that some of the anecdotes and topics can cut deeply :) Enough waffle from us.... Linda's Bio

Linda Case is a dog trainer, canine nutritionist and science writer. She earned her B.S. in Animal Science at Cornell University and her M.S. in Canine/Feline Nutrition at the University of Illinois. She was a lecturer in canine and feline science in the Animal Sciences Department at the University of Illinois for 15 years and taught companion animal behavior and training at the College of Veterinary Medicine for five years. Linda is the author of eight books, including most recently, "Dog Smart", "Dog Food Logic", and "Beware the Straw Man."

Well slap us with a turnip and tickle us pink Bookshelvers! This was a real landmark episode as Nat and Steve got to wallow in the presence of the one and only Marc Bekoff. Marc is an absolute legend in the fields of Animal Behaviour, Conservation and Animal Emotions. We discuss 2 (we couldn't choose just 1) of his plethora of amazing titles. "Unleashing Your Dog" (co-authored by Jessica Pierce) & "Why Dogs Hump & Bees Get Depressed". But to be honest we chatted about everything under the sun including, Marc's friend, Jane Goodall, Veganism, dogs and guilt, teaching inmates in prison and much, MUCH more.

Steve and Nat then dance through the podcast in their usual ballroom style. We also answer some blooming fantastic listener questions again. As extras this week we can here all about Nats latest injury (yes another one), who Steve has been named after, Steve's criminal past, Nats bookshelf fail and Nat officially say she will look after Steve's dogs for 3 months while he goes on holiday (it's true the evidence is in here)!

Marc's Bio
Marc is professor emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has published  31 books, won many awards for his research on animal behavior, animal emotions, compassionate conservation, and animal protection, has worked closely with Jane Goodall, and is a former Guggenheim Fellow. Marc's latest books are Canine Confidential: Why Dogs Do What They Do and Unleashing Your Dog: A Field Guide to Giving Your Canine Companion the Best Life Possible (with Jessica Pierce) and he also publishes regularly for Psychology Today. Many essays on all aspects of dog behavior can be seen here. Currently, Marc and Jessica are writing a book about what the world will be like for dogs as and when humans disappear (Dogs Gone Wild: Imagining the Lives of Dogs in a World Without Humans, Princeton University Press, 202?). In 1986 Marc won the Master's age-graded Tour de France.
