A regional New South Wales Mayor has penned an open letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese - calling on the federal government to rethink it's Murray Darling Basin Plan.

The federal government plans to buy back 450 gigalitres of water from landholders, as part of a plan to keep more supply in the Murray-Darling Basin river network, and help the environment.

The government will go to tender next week. 

Rural Reporter Emily Minney spoke with Murrumbidgee Mayor Ruth McRae, who is urging the government to overhaul the plan and ease pressure on farmers.
