  • Episode 328: Joker

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

Thanks for being patient as we took this past week off. But we’re here with out Joker review, both spoiler filled and spoiler free review! We also talk about all of the Blizzard/China news, Quite a few new trailer drops including: Jungle Cruise, Birds of Prey and Dolittle. Then we wrap everything up by reviewing last episodes streaming review of Welcome to Marwen and answering the Podquestion of “What planet in the solar system would you most want to visit?”

This week’s streaming review was Welcome to Marwen on HBOgo. Now this one was kind of sad, but not in the way you’d imagine. Both of us were pretty excited to see this one but missed it in the theaters. We loved the stylized look of the dolls and even in execution we loved it in the movie. But the problem that we each had with this movie was that we just didn’t feel for the main character. There were so many plot threads and conversations that just really didn’t lead anywhere and didn’t really help us empathize with the main character. We both recommend skipping this one, even with the cool effects.

Next week’s streaming review is from one of our fans, Kristi, and she wants us to watch House of the Witch on Netflix. This is the first of our 4 horror movies of October. We have 2 others in the hopper so if you want to help us round out that fourth movie slot make sure to send your suggestions below.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

  • Episode 327: Ad Ass-tra

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

We hit the theaters this week to see the space…”epic” Ad Astra. Wow… man I wish we missed this one, but we will get into that later. We’re also talking about all the nerd news this week along with discussing our streaming review of Mortal Engines and wrap up the podcast by answering last week’s dark Podquestion of “What is your favorite 90’s sit com?”

This week’s streaming review was Mortal Engines on HBOgo. Well, one thing is for sure, this is not our week for movies. Yet another big and bombastic movie that truly disappointed us. To be honest, neither of us really expected much from this movie. I liked the odd concept, but the movie never really goes anywhere and the character investment isn’t present. We both can’t recommend skipping this movie enough, you’re not missing a thing.

Next week’s streaming review is Welcome to Marwen on HBOgo.

  • Episode 326: Shutter Island

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

Thank you for your patience as I had to take the week off due to some truly crappy times at home. But we’re back and we’re talking about all nerdy things such as Sony State of Play announcement, Big Arrowverse Crossover, Birds of Prey poster, the Storming of Area 51 and Borderlands 3 reviews. We also discuss our streaming review of Shutter Island and wrap up the podcast by answering last week’s dark Podquestion of “What is your biggest fear?”

This week’s streaming review was Shutter Island on Amazon Prime. While neither of us are big Scorsese fans we both were really into this one. Bat especially loved this movie. The film is beautifully shot, acted and scored which alone would make this one worth the watch. But the mystery and suspense of what the main character is trying to unravel is something that we both were excited to see the conclusion to. Much like The Perfection, the less you know about this movie the better. Give this one a watch.

Next week we will be watching Mortal Engines on HBOgo.

  • Episode 325: IT Chapter 2

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

Oh no, the clown is back in town! This week we hit the theaters to see IT: Chapter 2. Don’t worry, I most definitely jumped and Bat most definitely laughed at my expense. But don’t worry, we won’t spoil the rollercoaster until the end of the show. In the mean time enjoy our spoiler free review followed by our streaming review of Hurt Locker. We also discuss some brief nerd news with Nintendo direct announcements and the Bad Boys 4 Life trailer. Then we wrap up the show by answering last week’s podquestion of “What the last magazine you bought?”

This week’s streaming review was The Hurt Locker on HBOgo. It’s really sad to say, but this movie was a disappointment. Knowing for so long that it gained so many accolades, hell it even won best picture over Avatar in 2010, made it all that must more of a let down. While we were both very interested to see the slice of life movie about a bomb disposal group in Iraq what we were instead treated to was a mish mash of scenes that just made us hate he main character. There was no real weight or gravity to the situation that they were in, instead it focused haphazardly on the adrenaline junkie style rush of the main character. Bat’s note that the one impact scene, the one where the Lieutenant Colonel was taken out by an IED, is also the main point of emotional impact in the entire film. We both were pretty amazed that this movie was so highly praised when it felt like and over all shallow portrayal of the the true horrors that were experienced by Bomb techs. We both recommend skipping this one.

Next week we will be watching Shutter Island on Amazon Prime.

  • Episode 324: Perfection

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

We’re hitting the ground running with a whole mess of news but first we dive into our streaming review of The Perfection (I finished it this time!). Starting off we have the ‘classic’ video games of Lion King and Alladin coming back, Rise of the Skywalker trailer, Joker new trailer and review reactions and this month’s free shit good shit. We also answer last week’s podquestion of “What is your favorite montage song?”

This week’s streaming review was The Perfection on Netflix. Gotta admit it right off the bat, we both really enjoyed this one. So much so, that we both recommend you don’t really listen to us or watch any trailers, just give it a watch. Okay, if you’re still reading then there’s no talking sense into you so let’s get to it. The way this movie continues to subvert your expectations and evolve the circumstances and characters is truly something to witness. The periodic “rewinds” that show you the other side of things allows you to slowly chip away at the bigger story and also chips away at the facade of the perfection. The two leads do such a wonderful job at acting each of their parts that I kept thinking back to it long after the credits roll. Every now and then it seems like Netlfix breaks the mold from it’s usual craptacular endings, give this movie your time and attention.

Next week we’re watching The Hurt Locker on HBOgo.

  • Episode 323: Trilogy, Womp Womp

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

We’re hitting the ground running with a whole mess of news but first we dive into our streaming review of The Wandering Earth. Although I didn’t finish it, guilty as charged, we provide you our full thoughts and then get to the good stuff. First off we have Kevin Smith to helm new He-Man series, Sony and Disney fight over Spiderman, Matrix 4 announced, FF8 Remaster launch date, Sony buys Insomniac, Mandalorian Trailer and new Marvel Disney+ TV show announcements. We also answer last week’s podquestion of “What is your favorite DVD that you own?”

This week’s streaming review was The Wandering Earth on Netflix.First off, let’s get it straight… yes I did recommend this movie and no I did not finish it. This, of course, makes me an asshole. Now with that out of the way, from what I have seen of the movie so far Ii can totally understand where Bat is coming from. While the over all cheesiness of this movie isn’t his flavor, it’s completely mine. The only thing that will sway my opinion one way or another is if I get bored with the rest of it. Bat definitely gave it a skip and I’m still on the see it train, so far. But we both agreed that it’s nice to see another culture’s take on big and bombastic sci-fi.

Next week we’re watching The Perfection on Netflix.

  • Episode 322: Okay-ish Boys

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

We hit the theaters this episode to catch the Good Boys to see if they really are a bunch of good boys… spoilers they aren’t but more on that later. As always we provide you our spoiler free and spoiler filled review of the movie. We also bring you our streaming review of the Sweet Documentary, Fedup, before diving into some nerd news including: Obi Wan show confirmed for Disney+, Viacom and CBS merger, new Timesplitters and Saints Row games in the mix, and Duck Tales remastered getting pulled. Then we wrap up our show, as always, by answering last weeks podquestion of “what is your favorite work out exercise?”

This week’s streaming review was Fed Up. Normally Bat and I really do love us some documentaries but sadly this one really felt like all sugar no filler. While many had talked this up as a “revelation” neither of us really learned anything that we didn’t know. Besides the percentage thing, that’s truly fucked up. But again, back to the documentary itself. This movie waxed and waned so much that we both got lost on what it’s actual message or goal was. In trying to balance a human story and a history lesson it really did a disservice to both. While we both agree that there is an addiction problem, we don’t think this movie did much favors to bringing an awareness to the problem and recommend you pass on this one.

Next week we’re watching the Chinese Sci-Fi epic The Wandering Earth on Netflix.

  • Episode 321: Excessively Long, Stunningly Disappointing and Bland

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

No theatrical review this week as we skip out on some scary stories. Instead we review our streaming movie of Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile on Netflix. We also dive into some fun nerd news with the announcement of a Event Horizon on Hulu, a Hulu/Disney+/ESPN+ bundle, Momoa protesting in Hawaii, changing the loot box formulas. Then we wrap up our show, as always, by answering last weeks podquestion of “which Fast and Furious characters do you want them to spin off next?”

This week’s streaming review was Netlfix’s Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. The Ted Bundy case is widely known as one that flipped our perceptions of what a brutal serial killer could be. Casting Zac Efron as Bundy was a great choice as he was able to portray the cunning, strategic, charismatic and entirely dark character. The parts where this movie falters is all around it’s editing, especially the ending. While they portray the killings and Teds life as two separate things to really give you a grasp of what the country was going through they failed at tying it all together at the end. What could have been a drastic revelation akin to pulling the curtains back on who he was they left it ambiguous which was just plain confusion. Yet another victim of the Netlfix movie curse. We both gave this one a thumbs down and recommended you

Next week we’re hitting up Amazon Prime for our next sugary documentary fix with Fed Up.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

  • Episode 320: Too Hobbs, Too Shaw

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

It’s gonna be a quick one (muffled laughter) as we pulled a late night movie watch and recording session to see Hobbs and Shaw. We present you with out spoiler free and spoiler filled review of this newest addition to the Fast and Furious Cinematic Universe (FFCU?). With little else to talk about we dive right on into the free shit, good shit, review our streaming movie of Serenity and answer last week’s podquestion of “which now defunct business do you miss the most?”

This week’s streaming review was Serenity. I was definitely not sold on this movie based upon the trailers but one must never judge a book by it’s cover. That’s a lesson that this movie teaches you about half way through. What starts out as one man’s obsession with catching that great tuna turns into a almost film noir hit movie before it goes full tits up and becomes a existential mind trip. I definitely did not see the twist coming and the connection to McConaughey’s daily life and the internal struggles that his son was going through were something else. While this movie is not a favorite of either of us it did surprise us. The concept was solid and for the most part the execution was as well. But something just felt off and we both had troubles putting our fingers on it. While it’s worth giving a shot it falls just short of some of our favorite movie head trips.

Our next week’s streaming review is on Netlfix’s Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.

  • Episode 319: Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop, Gamestop

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek!

As per usual we hit a lull following SDCC with just a few trailers with Zombie Land 2, Won’t You Be My Neighbor, and the Kingsman. But we do talk about what feels like the impending demise of Gamestop, our streaming review of The Hate U Give and wrap it all up with by answering our podquestion of “which superhero would you like to see made into a video game?”

This week’s streaming review was The Hate U Give on HBOgo. We knew going into this that it was going to be a heavy movie, and we were absolutely right. This movie tackles some extremely relevant and recent topics that have been in the social zeitgeist and it does it very well. The movie is long and, at times, exhausting but it is worth the price of admission thanks to the stellar acting of the cast. Especially Amandla Stenberg’s performance is something to witness. Seeing her character grow and be able to show the full range of emotions that come with the often painful change. We both highly recommend giving this movie your time and attention.

Our next week’s streaming review is on Amazon Prime, we’re going to watch Serenity.
