  • Episode 298: How to Train Your Dragon The Lost Hidden World

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek! It seems that the winter storm that hit most of the United States caused a massive news slowdown because we’re back to having just a few news stories. But don’t fret, we are hitting 2-2 as we hit the theaters again this week to watch How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. We will be bringing you our spoiler free and spoiler filled impressions. Among the few nerd news topics of Reggie retiring from Nintendo and more Xbox/Nintendo Speculation we also review this week’s streaming review, Won’t You Be My Neighbor. Lastly we wrap up this week’s episode by answering last week’s Podquestion of what song would you choose to replace for FF8’s Eyes on Me.

This week we watched the Heterolifemate’s suggestion of Won’t You Be My Neighbor on HBOgo. While both of us were expecting to cry in this one we were surprised by our dry eyes throughout the movie… well up until the ending. This documentary shed more light on a person that many of us watched and even showed how the world reacted to him during his tenure on television. Seeing Fred Rogers as a real person with flaws and humor just made his dedication to enriching childhood development all the more impressive. It’s extremely surprising to see the push back from society when a person tells children and people that they are special. The two moments that left both of us tearing up were from his commencement speech for Dartmouth in 2002. One was how he talks about taking a minute to recognize those who have impacted your life and the other was when he talks about the power of Love (see below). Here’s a link to the speech if you want to listen.

“And what that ultimately means, of course, is that you don’t ever have to do anything sensational for people to love you. When I say it’s you I like, I’m talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see, or hear, or touch. That deep part of you, that allows you to stand for those things, without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers hate. Peace that rises triumphant over war. And justice that proves more powerful than greed.”

    -Fred Rogers, 2002

Needless to say, we both recommend this movie. It’s a short watch at an hour and a half and you will learn more about this man who would be your neighbor.

This documentary about one of our childhood heroes, Mr. Rogers, is sure to make us cry. So won’t you watch this one with us?

Next week we’re going to watch another one of those movies we missed in the theaters, Sorry to Bother You on Hulu. Both Bat and I were instantly intrigued when we saw this trailer and are looking forward to reviewing it.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

  • Episode 297:A Badass Angel Alita

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek! And what a week it was! We have so much to talk about this week. We got to see the live action adaptation of Battle Angel Alita in some sweet, sweet Dolby Theater and bring you our spoiler free and spoiler filled impressions. But we don’t stop there as we do our Disneyland recap, and talk about all of the trailer drops and nerd news including: Nintendo Direct, Link’s Awakening remaster, Tetris 99, Activision Blizzard layoffs, Aladdin/Tolkien and Frozen 2 trailers. And we wrap up by answering last week’s Podquestion which game in your backlog do you want to beat this year.

Because we were out for most of the week we don’t have a streaming movie to review this week but we do have an awesome fan suggestion from the Heterolifemate. He wants us to watch Won’t You Be My Neighbor on HBOgo. This documentary about one of our childhood heroes, Mr. Rogers, is sure to make us cry. So won’t you watch this one with us?

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

  • Episode 296: I O U a better movie

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek! This week we review our streaming movie from two weeks ago, IO, along with discussing some of the nerd news with Xbox on Switch, PlayStation 5 rumors before wrapping it all up by answering last week’s Podquestion of who is your favorite TV Dad.

Our streaming review for this week was IO on Netflix. It’s kind of sad that when we mention that we’re watching a Netflix Original Movie that we expect something that is not fully baked and won’t really satisfy. What’s worse is that we constantly get proven right each and every time. Sadly IO does not stray too far from our expectations. With the various plots involving the supposed evolution of the human race, the visitor (Mackey) looking for her father, and the pen-pal love letters the audience just gets lost. These kinds of miss step like movies make me think that Netflix should be focusing on Short Films rather than full on Movies.

But with IO, the concept really felt like it had promise but the execution left something to be desired. Feel free to skip this one.

Because we are going to be out for most of the week, YAY Disneyland, we won’t have a streaming movie for this week. But you can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

  • Episode 295: Hammer Drops the Ball

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek! This week we will be bringing you a special presentation of Hammer dropping the ball. Because of that we will not be reviewing our streaming movie from last week, that’s for next week! But in the mean time we talk a little news, free shit good shit and answer last week’s Podquestion of who we think is going to win the Super Bowl.

Next next week we will be watching IO on Netflix. It’s end of the world type fun!

  • Episode 294: Blandheart (watch it for Douglas)

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek! This week we will be bringing you… well not much in terms of news. So instead we will talk about what we’re playing and some sweet, sweet Disneyland plans as well as our streaming review of Outlaw King. Finally we wrap up this week’s show with our Podquestion of what was is geeky family crest.

This week we watched the fan suggestion Outlaw King on Netflix. Thanks you listener of the podcast, Josh the Grey, we got to see the sequel to Braveheart… okay not really. If you saw Braveheart then you’ll understand why the begging of this movie had us in pieces (drum beat). Yes I’m terrible but you’re not surprised. The end of Braveheart is essentially the beginning of Outlaw King. While that is some healthy movie stock to come from, sadly the movie falls pretty short. Bat points out that it is another example of how Netflix hates editors. And while I enjoyed the movie more than him I think we both agree that Pine’s acting was pretty 2 dimensional. The best thing that came out of this movie was Douglas (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Again, it’s not great but it’s also not too terrible.

Next week we’re back to watching our own stuff with IO on Netflix. It’s end of the world type fun!

  • Episode 293: Unbreakable Glass

Hello everyone, welcome to our week in Geek! This week we will be bringing you our spoiler filled and spoiler free of the new M Night movie, Glass along with our streaming review of Guardians. In this episode we discuss Our recent Podcast show experiences, the recent drop of trailers with Ghost Busters 3, Spider Man Far From Home, John Wick 3 and the news of another Star Wars game being canceled. Finally we wrap up this week’s show with our Podquestion of what was your favorite moment from 2018.

This week we watched the fan suggestion of Guardians on Amazon Prime. Thanks to TK we got to watch a Russian take on the Super Hero Team genre. While strange and quite a bit silly at points the movie proved to be a rather enjoyable little romp. Essentially you got genetically altered humans from the Cold War Era Russia to gather together in a Fantastic Four esque “family” team. The special effects won’t blow you away, but you get a Were-Bear with Gatling Guns on it’s back, so you should be fine. I’ll keep it short, watch the trailer and you’ll have a good idea what you’re walking into. We both would say that if the trailer intrigues you enough you’ll get your kicks watching this one.

Next week we’re watching another fan suggestion of the Outlaw King on Netflix. Our friend Josh the Gray suggested we watch this Chris Pine + Beard Combo and we’re ready to dive right in.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

  • Episode 292: BandH 2019 Year in Review

Hello everyone, welcome back and our very first SzG of 2019! We’re very excited to begin the year and close out last year doing what we love, bullshitting with the best of them. With it being the new year and our first podcast of the year that means it’s time to do our Year in Review!!! (read to the tune of Pigs in Space). Bat and I saw different movies in the theaters, which him seeing Bumblebee and my seeing Mary Poppins Returns. So we will stick to our spoiler free reviews along with doing our streaming review of Mowgli and our Podquestion of which Disney animated movie do you Not want to see get the remake treatment.

This week we watched the fan suggestion of Mowgli: The Legend of the Jungle on Netflix. Well, how about that? We’re both pleasantly surprised by this latest Andy Serkis telling of Jungle Book. While we were both noticeable hesitant with wanting to watch this movie due to the numerous retelling that we’ve already seen. This one actually did something different, it told a story that felt new and was more fleshed out than it’s previous brethren. We are provided with an actual story focused on Mowgli rather than having him just be another pawn in play for the other characters. As with other Serkis movies, the motion capture goes a decent way of making these CGI creatures feel more alive and real. Again, this IS another telling of Jungle Book but just like we said in Bat’s review of Bumblebee it shows what some properties can be when handled by different people with different perspectives. Thanks Kristi, again, for delivering another good streaming recommendation.

Next week we’re watching another fan suggestion with the Russian movie Guardians on Amazon Prime. Our friend TK has answered the call for the lack of Russian movies we have yet to see… was there really a call?… and he delivered. This strange super hero movie from Mother Russia looks interesting to say the least.

Below you will find this week’s most recent podcast. But fear not, you can click these links to listen to this and past week’s podcast in iTunes or Sticher. We also have the past 2-3 episodes available on SoundCloud.

  • Episode 291: Momoa-Man

Hello everyone, welcome back and a very special Happy Holidays from both of us!

This week we’re super excited to bring you our spoiler free and spoiler filled reviews of Aquaman (it’s actually real!). We also discuss our streaming review of The Christmas Chronicles along with some nerd news regarding the trailers for Men in Black International, Hellboy, Aladdin and Doom Patrol. Lastly we wrap up this week’s show by answering this week’s podquestion of what is your favorite Spider Man.

This week we watched the new Netflix Christmas movie The Christmas Chronicles. I can say that I was genuinely surprised at how much fun I had with this movie. Bat does mention a clear caveat by remembering this is a kids movie but even with that in mind you can still find a decent amount of fun watching Kurt Russel run around as old Saint Nick. It’s not a genre breaking movie but it does do a good enough job mirroring one of my favorite (Tim Allen’s Santa Clause) to earn it’s place among the yearly tradition. Give it a shot, it’s silly and fun but has enough heart to give it a longer lifespan.

Next week we’re watching the fan suggestion of Mowgli: The Legend of the Jungle on Netflix. It seems Kristi heard our cries and whines about not wanting to see it and she decided to give us a little early Christmas present by recommending this movie. Hopefully it’s better than we’re expecting.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

  • Episode 290: Will the Real Spiderman Please Step Up

Hello everyone, welcome back to another week in geek. This week we’re super excited to bring you our spoiler free and spoiler filled reviews of Spider Man: Into the Spiderverse. We also discuss our streaming review of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs along with some nerd news regarding the unannounced cancellation of the Punisher Netflix show and I talk about my experience with Doki Doki Literature Club. Lastly we wrap up this week’s show by answering this week’s podquestion of what has been the game you’ve had the most fun with this year.

This week we watched the new Cohen Brother’s flick The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix. Both of us have to say that we were genuinely surprised (pleasantly even) that this move was actually more of a vignette style movie than one continuous story. Buster Scruggs was only in the first of the 6 vignette even. The other 5 were more slice of life in the wild west. While our favorites varied between Bat and myself we both agreed that the first bunch of the stories were the strongest. With the last 2-3 starting to drag on. I absolutely loved the Prospector story and Bat really enjoyed the Pan Shot one. While Bat was really anxious going into this one he came around and gave it a thumbs up, as I did. While not all of the stories are strong, and they don’t connect in any noticeable way, we both still had a good time watching them.

Next week we’re watching the Kurt Russell lead The Christmas Chronicles on Netflix. Join us in watching what we hope might be a fun new addition to the Christmas movie repertoire.

  • Episode 289: Not 290

Hello everyone, welcome back to another week in geek. We’re still keeping with the short and sweet episodes by sticking with what we do best, bullshittery. We discuss our streaming review of the Rampage. And we also discuss nerd news with the fall of Tumblr, The Avengers End Game and Captain Marvel trailers, Game Award announcements, some free shit good shit and answering this week’s podquestion of which natural disaster scares you the most.

This week we watched another Rock-rific movie with Rampage. While there was some promise of a cheese fest action flick we were only teased a bit with some of the fights between the monsters. This fact alone left us a little out in the cold, hoping for more action. While it’s not terrible it’s also not great. The chemistry between the Rock and George was good but the rest of the movie just left us wanting more. You can skip this one or watch it, either way I don’t think you’ll be missing much.

Next week we’re watching the new Cohen Brother’s flick in all of it’s strangeness. Bat is already groaning at the thought. But you can watch along as we pick The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix this week.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.
