  • Episode 106: Always Save Your Work

Howdy yall, so I just want to make it a point to remind you all to save your work…. No seriously do it now.  I bring up this point because I wrote a beautiful blog for all of you to enjoy but alas I was a fool and decided to close the wrong tab.  Woe is me~  But you don’t care much about that do you?  No indeed, you are here for some good ‘oll SzG commentary! So with that point of frustration I ask your forgiveness in the brevity of this post and now on with the show.  No Theatrical Review this week but don’t fret!  Avengers 2 is just around the corner as well as the beginning of the glorious Summer Movie season.  This week’s topics include Trailers from Batman V Superman, Ant-Man, Terminator Genisys, StarWars, Battlefront, Netflix getting a How to Train Your Dragon TV show and Oliva Munn cast as Psylocke.  Oh and you also get a special SzG bet between Bat and myself.

The Outside was this weeks streaming review was from another listener and friend of the show, the Fanboy.  I had a very nice and eloquent review written out for this one but again… lost to the digital gods so I’ll sum it up for you.  Movie is bad.  It’s a surf movie with about 10% surfing.  Acting is like after school special bad.  Wooden acting might be an affront to wood supporters everywhere.  Conditional: this isn’t our type of movie so it may just be us… but online reviews seem to side with us.  Skip this one kiddos, you’ll be better for it.  Bat 3 stars (generous) Hammer 2 stars (slightly less generous).

Next week we get back to suggesting movies for ourselves with A Million Ways to Die in the West.

Just so we have it in writing dear listeners here is our SzG Hammer vs Bat Smirnoff Ice Bet.  Bat predicts that Ant-Man will be Marvels  first “flop” while I protest that it will be an equal success at least to other Movies.  We came to our estimated Box Office amounts by looking at past movies and Bat is saying that the movie will make less than $150 million while I’m saying that it will make $180 million.  We’re counting this only for it’s theatrical run and domestic only.   The stakes?  We’re using “Bros Icing Bros” as the basis for our “rewards.”  If Bat wins I shall chug a Smirnoff Ice (flavor of his choice) on bended knee and if I win he will do the same.  Now If it’s in between the two then we will have a chug off.  All of this will be posted on YouTube for your viewing pleasure.  So let the best (me) man win!

  • Episode 104: SzG Roundtable Summer Movie Roundup

Hello and welcome back to our 2nd Sprecken ze Geek Round Table for this year.  This is something we started with Episode 100 where once a month we gather a group of our friends and have some good old fashion discussions.  This week we are joined by our good friend Terry and at long last we see the triumphant return of Ken “the Web” Brown!  Our topic of discussion this episode is all about this Summer’s Movie releases. • Episode 103: Comic Conundrums and Questionable Sequels

Hello again to all of you awesome people!  No Theatrical Review this week since honestly there isn’t all too much out right now. But we do have a Streaming Review along with a heaping helping of nerd news including: Bruce Campbell wanting to do an ‘Expendables’ of Horror movies, the Pixels trailer, Mallrats 2 announced, Batgirl and Joker controversy, a run down of Marvel’s Secret Wars tie ins, Nintendo’s mobile and next gen system plans, Kojima leaving Konami, and Bat’s review of Infamous Second Son.

This weeks streaming review was Jack Ryan: Shaddow Recruit.  Both Bat and I enjoy the Jack Ryan series of movies, though we were surprised to find out there was only five of them made so far.  This movie is not bad by any means, not great but it is a fun spy thriller with some good action and decent performances by all involved.  If you are in the mood for a less action but higher concept spy movie give this one a shot.  We both rated it a 3 star on Netflix.

This weeks Streaming Review comes from listener and friend of the show Charles.  Boy Wonder is a movie that neither Bat nor I have ever heard of.  Check out the trailer below to see what you’re in for this week.

  • Episode 102: Cinder- Ella

Welcome back and good morning my favorite listeners, yes I mean you!  We are on a roll it seems with our Theatrical reviews as we hit up our local cinema and caught this weeks release, Cinderella.   Though I do seeing us slowing down since there’s not a whole lot happening until Avengers 2.  But what doesn’t seem to be slowing down is the news!  This week we discuss the title of the first standalone Star Wars movie, Tron 3 rumored to start shooting, another Ghostbusters movie being announced,  Frozen 2 announced (big surprise there), Zoolander 2 announced, no Marvel at SDCC, HBOgo’s limited exclusivity deal and we talk about the passing of Terry Pratchet,

  • Episode 101: CHAPPiE 5 Alive!

Gooooood morning Everyone and welcome to this weeks over the 100 hump SzG.  Wow do we feel old… 2 years old that is.  As a celebration of sorts we go back to what we do normally and review a movie, CHAPPiE.  This movie apparently got a lot of flak over the weekend and even some of our friends that saw it with us thought the same, but we liked it and we explain why in more detail in the episode.  We also bring you a few bits of nerdy news including both Ducktales and Inspector Gadget getting remakes, Avengers 2 trailer, Supergirl costume reveal and Rock Band lives!!!

To kick it all off we review my streaming suggestion of Chef.  Over all we both really enjoyed this one, the food parts esspecially left me hungry for more.  Seriously this movie alone has me wanting to take a trip to New Orleans for some Cafe Du Monde for some coffee and beignets.  The heart warming story of a father and son connecting over a shared purpose was nice and refreshing (never mind that he was pretty neglecting before).  But the over all feeling of a person seeking an outlet for his creativity really resonated with me and I would recommend the movie to you dear listeners for a fun easy movie while you cook something tasty.

Next weeks Streaming Review is Earth to Echo.  The movie looks to be a found footage esque movie where a group of kids find a little alien and try to get it home.  Feels like a newer version of ET.  Will it be good?  Will it have recces pieces?  Will they replace secret agents guns with walkie talkies?  well watch the movie and send in your own review for next weeks episode.

  • Episode 98: Some Beautiful Violence

Guess what guys and gals?  We have another Theatrical Review this week!  Okay well we have half of one, due to that magical stuff called work Bat was unable to join me for our review of Kingsman: the Secret Service. So there will only be a spoiler free review here, didn’t want to spoil the fun for Bat.

Also this week we have  Streaming Review as well as some new nerd news: The Hitman Trailer, Borderland Funco figures, more details about Starz Evil Dead series, 300 team to take on Robotech movie, John Wick 2 and Spiderman announced to be joining the MCU.

This weeks suggestions was Horns.  We didn’t know much about this movie going in besides the concept and that Radcliffe was in it.  Over all we really enjoyed the movie becuase of how it carried out the strange demonic twist on a murder mystery.  I really felt surprised by how good this movie was, though not without it’s flaws.  Both Bat and I gave it 3 out of 5 stars on Netflix and would recommend this movie to friends who are looking for something a little different.

Speaking of something different.  Did you ever want to see a mustachioed Joaquin Phoenix try and flirt with the voice of a digital Scarlett Johansson?  Well regardless of your answer that is this weeks Streaming Review, Her.

  • Episode 97: Jupiter Decending

Guess what guys and gals?  We have a Theatrical Review this week!  This week we went to see Jupiter Ascending, the Wachowskis newest film adventure.  We were both intrigued by the trailers we saw before but were worried from previous experiences as well as the fact this movie was almost delayed a year.  It was originally on our Summer Movie list for geeks-sake!  Was the movie worth it?

Well to start off let’s be positive, this movie is abso-lutely gorgeous!  The graphics, vistas and just pure strange creatures all looked fantastic and if that is all you want from a movie I would highly recommend you see this movie in the theater now.  Heck even spring for the 3D as I have heard it only enhances the awesomeness that is this movies beauty.   The action for the most part was pretty fast paced and enjoyable except for the confusing and long action scene over Chicago or Tatum and Bean’s jaunt through a wall of robots. That is about where I’m going to stop with the positives though.

So lets get into the cons of this movie.  The writing of this movie is so damn choppy and inconsistent that it really becomes more than a little hard to follow and just plain nonsensical at times.  The love story between Tatum and Kunis feels really forces and kind of out of character, see Anakin/Padme “no but I love you~.”  Okay maybe not that bad but it felt shoehorned in.  Besides Tatum and Bean I didn’t really think the acting was anything to sneeze at (it was either bad or just kinda bland).  Also don’t get me started on Mr. Wisper face that Eddie Redmayne was playing.  I don’t know if it was his choice or bad directing but his character needed some major tweeks as it was sometimes so hard to hear him unless he screamed. The last part that I’ll harp on was the story.  Overall it felt like big sections were cut out or just forgotten entirely.  The movie builds up a cool mythos and talks some awesome history and I would loved to have seen but instead seems to stick with a weird hybrid feel of Flash Gordon mixed with Dune and the Matrix.

All in all, no this is not a horrible movie but it is also far from a great movie.  The action and absolute beauty might win over some and hell even the over all feeling of Cheesy might make some believe this will be a cult hit down the line.  But I keep feeling that I kind of want to see the original cut of the movie to see what was or was not lost.  Whether you see this one… well that choice is yours but definitely keep your expectations in check (we went in with none really).

Also this week we have  Streaming Review as well as some new nerd news.

Our first sports Streaming Review is Brian and the Boz.  While I am far from a sports fan, Bat recommended this one because he knew I was completely oblivious to the Boz  and that I love documentaries.  Taking this as just a documentary I can say that I really enjoyed it
