S1e01 "Heart of the Cards"

Having finished the Toei anime, we start our journey to Duelist Kingdom! Today we're joined by special guest Lydia, who knows nothing about Yugioh, to give a fresh perspective on how well this pilot episode works as an introduction, despite the adaptation decision to skip 7 manga volumes (spoilers: not very well!). Along the way we manage to also discuss the X-Men, German philosophers, and why Grandpa should be the protagonist of the show.

Season Zero Wrapup

We've made it to the end of the Toei anime season! In this retrospective episode we talk about our feelings on the season as a whole as well as giving some rankings of our favorite & least favorite episodes, games, and other moments. Plus one last round of voice actor fun facts, and we pull out our script doctor hats and discuss how we would fix this series to be better (you're welcome).

Yu-Gi-Oh (Movie 1999)

The anime may be done but before we can close the book on Toei's Yugioh we need to also watch this short movie with great animation. It's pretty hard to work this into any sort of canon timeline, but that won't stop us from trying! We also give our regular recommendations and discover a new favorite film reviewer.

On the last episode of Toei's Yugioh (1998), we witness the end of the Monster World arc and talk about Zorc's final form, when your hand is reverse-possessed, and how well this works as a finale. It's a good time!

Unadapted Manga Chapters: The Death-T Arc

Happy Halloween all! This week's extra-length bonus episode is an overview of all the manga chapters relating to Kaiba's theme park of death that weren't covered in the anime -- featuring poisoned hamburgers, serial killers, and (most horrifying of all) this really bad baby. Plus some quick horror movie recommendations.

s0e26 "Rival Clash - The Greatest Crisis"

The Monster World arc continues with a cute but fairly uneventful episode. Fortunately we have the debut of final boss Zorc and the return of our guest Suzie to carry us through. Plus, an investigation into what Yugioh fandom was like back in the mid-00s.

s0e25 "A New Development - Attack of the Handsome Boy"

We're joined by a VERY special guest this week, Jenny's sister Suzie, who helps us discuss the "normie" perspective. Yugi & his friends make some foolish decisions and are introduced to tabletop roleplaying in the first part of the Monster World arc.

(Quick note- We had lots of technical difficulties while recording this and there are some blips & cutoffs in our audio during the 2nd half of this episode - still completely listenable but a little off. Our next ep will be back to normal!)

The Death-T arc concludes with... not much of a bang, but some wacky decisions and a lot for us to discuss. Also we gave our usual recommendations and spent a weird amount of time talking about clowns.

- if you're curious, we were able to later confirm that the main character of D.Gray-Man IS literally a clown who worked in a circus as part of his tragic anime backstory
