There was outrage at  the San Francisco Police Commission as parents and teens pushed back against the arrest of dozens of young people at an unsanctioned skateboarding event. One year into her term as San Francisco's District Attorney, Brooke Jenkins says significant progress has been made in rebuilding the office.

For thousands of workers in California, a heat wave is a big deal and a big challenge. With the National Weather Service issuing an excessive heat warning for the inland Bay Area this weekend, including parts of Sonoma and Napa counties, there are concerns people could develop heat-related illnesses.

A sad day for lovers of Anchor Steam beer, the iconic San Francisco-based company that makes the beer is turning off its taps. It will soon be illegal to be a spectator at a sideshow in Alameda County after new, tighter rules were approved by Supervisors last night. A city Supervisor wants San Francisco to do more to prevent car break-ins. 

Oakland has been trying to respond to non-violent 911 calls with civilians instead of police. Novato will offer Narcan to reverse the symptoms of a drug overdose on pets as well as people.

Have you been feeling like the discourse in professional politics in recent years has gotten meaner? Research shows that "nasty politics" has been on the rise in recent years, with one expert saying it's the worst it's been since the civil war. For more on this, KCBS Radio's Holly Quan spoke with Thomas Zeitzoff, Associate Professor at the School of Public Affairs at American University and author of the book "Nasty Politics."

In other news, fireworks in Oakland melted  a basketball court, and community members rallied to repair the plastic, donating both their time and money. 

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao is proposing a raise to her own salary, that could be up to $75,000, but residents have some reservations about such a high increase, while other demands on the city government continue to go unanswered. 

The city of Hayward is dealing with the fallout of a cyber attack, taking down their government website and only offering services in person or over the phone, until

In other news, over six months after being flooded out of their homes, residents of an East Bay apartment complex say they are tired of waiting for repairs to be finished. There will soon be more people sweeping the streets of downtown San Rafael. The city is doubling its budget for an program that helps the homeless help the community remain clean in exchange for a stipend and social services and opportunities tor housing.  The Bay Area is bracing for another heat wave later this week and conditions will be ripe for mosquitoes and West Nile Virus.

More than 100 people were arrested or cited on a variety of allegations, including assaulting officers and vandalizing Muni trains, this past Saturday night at the annual Dolores Hill Bomb skateboarding event in San Francisco. Now the city's police department is having to defend its large-scale response to what Chief Bill Scott is calling "dangerous and unlawful behavior." In other news; the Coalition on Homeless claims the city of San Francisco is not in compliance with an injunction ordered back in December.  Someone could strike it rich tonight, big time wealthy - 650 million dollars worth. That’s how much the nationwide power ball lottery payout has grown to.

Some new tech is coming to Fort Bragg, where water is an especially precious commodity due to it's limited surface water resources, which will allow the city to look to the sea to help. This isn't your typical desalination tech which can have far-reaching negative environmental impacts. Instead, one company aims to use the ocean itself to power the efforts.

A lot of people have been leaving California for Texas. Excitement is building for Mateo, a budding Lego builder representing the Bay Area this year on a national level who is "bricking" the limits of your imagination. Mateo swept the regional competition by building a Lego airplane modeled after the Wright Brother's model which featured computers, levers, lights, and a steering wheel.
