There was another shooting on a freeway in the Bay Area this weekend, and this time it resulted in the death of a 5 year old girl. KCBS Radio's Matt Bigler tells us more on this story.

The ripple effect of California’s housing crisis is having an impact on the state’s K through 12 students. San Francisco was rocked by two high profile violent crimes this week and officials are providing scant details about either of them. The deadly toll that Fentanyl is taking on our streets and Speaker of the House emeritus Nancy Pelosi is planning a campaign against it. Some rural San Benito and Monterey county communities are now on the way to getting drinkable water running out of the tap again. Housing prices in California are still high, but they're going down. That's the opposite of what's happening on the East Coast.

One of the biggest attractions at the Monterey Bay Aquarium is the frolicking sea otters and some of those otters are doing some very important work behind the scenes. Typically, when a young woman goes missing in the U.S. those that get the most attention are white and blonde. Yet, a large number of those missing are people of color. Scientists at USC have made a worrisome discovery - at two of LA county's biggest wastewater treatment plants. Bacteria resistant to what doctors call a last resort antibiotic.

More than 100 young people will meet in the state capitol next weekend for a day of advocacy on several bills that affect their lives. 

The nearly two decade of Federal Oversight of the Oakland Police Department, that was potentially set to end this May, will remain in place. With President Joe Biden signing a major disaster declaration this week for the Monterey County town of Pajaro, FEMA has now opened up an assistance center. It has been a long winter, with about 20 atmospheric rivers delivering historic amounts of rain and snow to California. But as we discuss during this week’s KCBS In Depth program, California’s water woes are not over yet. Throughout the month of April, Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region is asking for  volunteers to help install smoke detectors in homes throughout communities in our region.

It's being called a first-of-its-kind campaign - using dating apps to boost voter turnout in in a significant election. The approach was adopted due to a growing number of reports indicating that young adults have become increasingly turned of by traditional political canvassing methods. San Francisco police are continuing to investigate the early morning fatal stabbing of a tech executive earlier this week. The company that operates robotaxis in San Francisco had to recall its entire fleet after one rear-ended a Muni bus in San Francisco last month. An earthquake resilient water pipeline is replacing an outdated one between Alameda and Oakland this weekend.

There is a new push for the Biden Administration to declare a federal disaster in the wake of the complete cancellation of California’s salmon season. There continues to be a critical need for organ donations in the U.S. Many un-documented residents of the small farmworker town of Pajaro have worried that they may not be able to get help. Today the Biden administration is proposing new rules surrounding transgender athletes in high school and college. Under the proposal, schools would be forbidden from categorical bans on transgender athletes by making any outright ban a violation of Title IX. It does however lay out guidelines for when teams could bar participation by trans athletes under certain circumstances. For more, Brett and Patti spoke to Shelby Chestnut, Executive Director of the Transgender Law Center.
