  • How the Iran war could raise food prices | Global News Podcast
The US-Israel war with Iran continues to create turbulence for the global economy. The head of the International Energy Agency has said the world is facing a worse crisis than the oil shock of the 1970s and the fallout from the Ukraine war combined.
It's not just a problem of fuel supply — it's the uncertainty of what will happen to the cargos of ships that can't make the journey through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran's effective blockade of the Strait has led to higher costs for fuel and fertiliser, both crucial elements of food production. About a third of all fertilizer shipped globally goes through the waterway from Gulf states, and there are now warnings about the impact on global supplies and food prices.
Farmers say that they will have to pass on the higher costs of growing to consumers, making groceries more expensive. Plus, planting seasons are being missed. The United Nations has warned that an additional 45 million people could face acute hunger if the war lasts through June.
We speak to Michelle Fleury, the BBC's business correspondent in New York.

US President Donald Trump said the US and Iran have held talks on the "complete and total resolution of hostilities" in the Middle East.
However, Iran's parliament speaker denies discussions have taken place, saying "fake news" is being used to "manipulate" the oil markets.
Newly released figures show the number of people killed in Lebanon since Israel began its operations in the country has risen to 1,039, according to Lebanon's health ministry.
Meanwhile, the Red Cross has warned events in the Middle East are at risk of reaching a 'point of no return'.

  • Trump's options: how could the Iran war end? | The Global Story
Donald Trump says the United States and Iran have held talks on the "complete and total resolution of hostilities" in the Middle East.
He says that, as a result of the talks, he has postponed threatened strikes on Iranian power plants for five days.
However, Iran's foreign ministry denies such talks have taken place, according to the BBC's US partner CBS.
As the US and Israel war with Iran enters its fourth week, there are growing number of people in the United States calling for a proper resolution.
This is a critical moment where the war could turn into a long drawn-out conflict. Or it could be a moment where Donald Trump dashes for a quick exit.
The BBC’s world affairs correspondent Joe Inwood and the BBC’s Persian service’s Ghoncheh Habibiazad discuss with Tristan Redman where this could all go next.

  • The rise of fake AI influencers sexualising black women | BBC News
TikTok has banned 20 accounts after the BBC highlighted the use of AI-generated black female influencers to drive users to sites to promote sexually explicit content.
BBC Arabic’s Sharihan Al-Akhras has been investigating this rise in fake AI influencers and spoke to model Riya, who found that one of these accounts had modified her videos - garnering millions of views.
Nearly all the accounts were on Instagram and about a third also had versions on TikTok. The BBC sent Meta and TikTok examples of the accounts we identified, and asked for their responses. Instagram's parent company Meta told the BBC it was investigating, but did not say it had taken any action.
The BBC contacted TikTok with examples of these accounts and the company said it had removed content and banned accounts that broke its rules.
TikTok says it “prohibits AI generated content of individuals used without their permission, we have zero tolerance for content which promotes off-platform sexual services, and we have removed content and banned accounts which breach our rules.”
Instagram’s parent company Meta says: “We are investigating the content brought to our attention. We want people to know when they see posts that have been made with AI. In 2024, we announced a new approach for labelling AI-generated content. An important part of this approach relies on industry standard indicators that other companies include in content created using their tools, which help us assess whether something is created using AI.”

Counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation into an arson attack on four ambulances belonging to a Jewish community charity in north London, UK.
Police say it has not been declared a terrorist incident "at this stage" and they are looking into claims of responsibility made by a group online.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer called it a "horrific antisemitic attack', adding, "It's really important that we all stand together at a moment like this."
London Fire Brigade were called to Highfield Road in Golders Green at around 01:40 GMT, and said multiple cylinders in the vehicles exploded, causing windows to break in nearby flats.

  • Trump postpones strikes against Iran power plants due to "productive" talks with Tehran | BBC News
US President Donald Trump has said there have been "productive conversations" about a "complete and total resolution" to the conflict in the Middle East.
He said he will "postpone any and all strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure" for a five day period.
On Saturday night, Trump gave Iran a 48-hour deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz - or, he said, the US would "obliterate" Iranian power plants, "starting with the biggest one first".

  • UK approves US use of British bases as Trump considers 'winding down' war in Iran | BBC News
The UK has agreed to allow the US to use British bases to launch strikes on Iranian sites targeting the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump said the UK "should have acted a lot faster", while Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed Sir Keir was "putting British lives in danger”.
Trump also said the US is considering “winding down” operations against Iran, but that other nations must guard the Strait of Hormuz - a vital shipping lane for oil.
But Iran’s foreign minister has said "it does not appear that the United States is prepared to halt its aggression".
