  • US judge overturns President Trump's White House media ban | BBC News
A US judge had temporarily overturned bans placed on MS Now, CNN and Politico from the White House.
A District of Columbia court issued a temporary restraining order against the ban, meaning CNN, MS NOW and Politico must have their access restored for 14 days, after ruling the move "likely violated their constitutional due process rights".
The Trump administration defended the move in court, accusing the outlets of publishing false information and threatening national security - an argument the court rejected.

  • President Xi greeted by Donald Trump as he rolls out red carpet for Chinese leader | BBC News
China’s President Xi has been greeted by Donald Trump as he arrived in Washington for a historic summit.
The White House has rolled out the red carpet for China’s leader Xi Jinping, with AI, trade and Taiwan expected to be on the agenda for the leaders of the global superpowers.
Xi was greeted personally by Trump at Andrews Air Force Base on the eve of a White House state dinner and a military flyover.
The three-day trip marks Xi's first state visit to the US since 2015 and his third meeting with Trump in the past year.
Adding to the high-stakes state visit, a US-China trade agreement reached last year is set to expire in November.
The trade truce - reached in October 2025 as Trump and Xi met in South Korea - saw Washington suspend steep tariff increases on Chinese goods while Beijing eased back from restricting rare earth exports critical for manufacturing.
Experts said they will be watching for some sort of announcement around an extension of this agreement during the state visit.
Xi's trip to Washington, which ends on Friday, will have plenty of pomp and pageantry, and includes lavish dinners, private tours and performances. He is accompanied by First Lady Peng Liyuan who is expected to visit the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art with US First Lady Melania Trump on Thursday.

  • What does China’s AI revolution look like from inside? | The Global Story
China's President Xi Jinping returns to the White House on Thursday for the first time in over a decade.
A priority for both leaders will be to discuss AI. The two countries are currently locked in a fierce competition for AI dominance, amid dire warnings from US tech executives in recent weeks that the speed of AI development needs to be slowed, as the risks to humanity are too great.
President Trump has rejected those calls for a slowdown or suggestions of regulation, in part because of his concerns that China will overtake the US in AI development.
In this episode we speak to the BBC’s China correspondent Laura Bicker who tells us what China’s AI revolution looks from inside the country. And we ask how this issue is changing the power dynamics between the US and China.
New episodes of The Global Story are released daily. If you’re in the UK, listen on BBC Sounds. If you live outside the UK, listen on BBC.com or wherever you get your podcasts.

  • Scientists discover why Kent meningitis strain was so severe | BBC News
Scientists say they have discovered why the bacteria responsible for the UK's worst outbreak of meningitis B in Kent earlier this year proved so dangerous.
More than 20 young people, mostly students, were infected in the March outbreak, linked to a Canterbury nightclub. All needed hospital treatment, while nine ended up in intensive care and two died.
Experts at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the University of Oxford, who have looked at the DNA of the bacterium, say it picked up some genetic material from other bugs found naturally in the throats of some people.
This exchange created a new strain or variant that then spread between clubbers and caused severe illness.
