  • US House expected to approve resolution to release Epstein files | BBC News
The US House of Representatives is expected to approve a measure that would compel the justice department to release the "Epstein files".
House Speaker Mike Johnson said he expected a "large vote tally" when the measure came to the floor of the Republican-led chamber on Tuesday, after President Donald Trump called on Republican lawmakers to approve it.
But the files may not be released soon, and it is unclear if some will be held back.
Survivors of Epstein's abuse are also due to appear on Capitol Hill on Tuesday in support of the measure.

  • Ten-hour mission to excavate huge whale head in Cornwall, UK | BBC News
The two-tonne head of a whale that died after stranding in Cornwall has been excavated in a 10-hour mission, five years after its burial.
As the local community had previously attempted to rescue the fin whale in 2020, a decision was made to keep part of it so it could eventually be displayed as a memorial.
Scientist Robbie McDonald said he buried the skull on University of Exeter land in Falmouth to help prepare the bones for study and display, as it is the most natural way to clean them.

  • Donald Trump's plan for Gaza backed by UN Security Council | BBC News
The UN Security Council has voted in favour of a US-drafted resolution that endorses US President Donald Trump's 20-point plan for Gaza.
Included in the plan is the establishment of an International Stabilisation Force (ISF), to which, the US says, multiple unnamed countries have offered to contribute.
The resolution was backed by 13 countries - including the UK, France and Somalia - with none voting against the proposal. Russia and China abstained.
Adopting it was an "important step in the consolidation of the ceasefire", a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.
Hamas has rejected the resolution, saying it fails to meet Palestinians' rights and demands.

  • Will the UK Government's latest asylum system reforms work? | BBC Newscast
The home secretary Shabana Mahmood announced sweeping changes to the UK's asylum policy, including plans to return asylum seekers to their home country if it is deemed safe.
Under the new plans, most people will have to wait 20 years to apply for settled status, and the deportation process will be sped up for failed cases, including for families with children. The reforms have received tentative support from the opposition but will likely face resistance closer to home, with a number of Labour MPs publicly criticising them.
Adam and Chris break down the politics and director of the Migration Observatory Madeleine Sumption joins Adam to dive deep into the white paper.

  • US to label Venezuela's Cartel de los Soles as terrorists | BBC News
Cartel de los Soles, a group the US alleges is led by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, will be designated a terrorist organisation, the US State Department has said.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Sunday that the US intends to consider the group a Foreign Terrorist Organisation from 24 November.
Maduro will effectively be designated a terrorist because the US alleges he heads the Cartel de los Soles, an accusation Maduro strongly denies.
It is the Trump administration's latest effort to reduce drug trafficking and put pressure on Maduro, as the US considers whether to take military action inside the country.

  • Why did Donald Trump reverse his position on Epstein files? | BBC News
US President Donald Trump has urged lawmakers in his own party to vote to release files relating to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump wrote on Sunday that Republicans in the House of Representatives should vote in favour of a bill that would compel the US government to publish all the documents on Epstein "because we have nothing to hide".
The reversal of his recent position follows a slow drip feed of documents concerning the disgraced financier by House Democrats, some of which reference Trump, who has always denied any link to Epstein's sex abuse and trafficking.
