  • Trump condemns 'disgusting' Russian attacks on Ukraine and confirms sanctions threat | BBC News
US President Donald Trump has condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine, saying “I think it’s disgusting what they’re doing”. Trump confirmed that he plans to impose economic sanctions on Moscow within days if no ceasefire agreement is reached.
It follows some of the deadliest Russian attacks on Ukraine’s capital since Russia’s full scale invasion. Officials in Kyiv say at least 16 people were killed and more than 150 injured, many of them children, when missiles rained down on residential areas of the city.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, President Trump said he was not sure whether sanctions would deter Russia. He has given Russian President Vladimir Putin until August 8 to agree a deal or face tariffs and economic sanctions.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Jonathan Beale in Kyiv and Gary O’Donoghue in Washington.

  • 2,500-year-old Siberian ‘ice mummy’ had intricate tattoos, imaging reveals | BBC News
High-resolution imaging of tattoos found on a 2,500 year old Siberian "ice mummy" have revealed decorations that a modern tattooist would find challenging to produce, according to researchers.
The intricate tattoos of leopards, a stag, a rooster, and a mythical half-lion and half-eagle creature on the woman's body shed light on an ancient warrior culture.
Archaeologists worked with a tattooist, who reproduces ancient skin decorations on his own body, to understand how exactly they were made.
The tattooed woman, aged about 50, was from the nomadic horse-riding Pazyryk people who lived on the vast steppe between China and Europe.

  • Fighting the crime gangs taking over the UK high streets | BBC News
Along a one-mile stretch of road near the centre of Newport, south Wales, 19 shops have been shut down in the past nine months for selling illegal tobacco and vapes.
"It's shameful that this is happening," Steve Hay, one of the Trading Standards team responsible for the closures, said.
He believes that the sale of illegal goods is a crime causing deep problems in the community.
Illegal cigarettes, tobacco and vape products were seized from 3,624 shops across England, Scotland and Wales in 2024-25, according to BBC Freedom of Information requests.
The Home Office said that "over 500 town centres are getting extra neighbourhood patrols" and that these would have a major role in cracking down on the sale of illegal tobacco products.

  • Donald Trump envoy meets Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu | BBC News
The US' special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, has met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of increasing Interntional pressure on Israel as Canada and Portugal have joined France and Britain in saying they will recognise - or are considering recognising - Palestinian statehood if the situation continues and certain conditions are met.

  • Donald Trump threatens India with ‘penalty’ over Russia ties | BBC News
US President Donald Trump has threatened India with an "unspecified penalty" over its military and trade ties with Russia, as part of his push for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
The sanctions would be in addition to the 25% tariffs announced by the president this week, which are due to come into effect on 1 August.
India is the largest importer of Russian arms worldwide, which make up more than half its military equipment.
Russia is also India's top oil supplier, accounting for 35% of overall supplies in 2025.
The Security Brief’s Mikey Kay, a former Senior Officer in the British Military, explains the nature of the military relationship between the two countries – and looks at the role other nations are playing in Russia’s arms arsenal.

  • Aid cuts will push Nigerians into arms of Boko Haram militants, UN warns | BBC News
Drastic cuts to humanitarian aid in north-eastern Nigeria could prove a advantage to one of the world's most deadly militant groups, Boko Haram, aid agencies have warned.
A reduction of funding in recent months has forced the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) to ration its support, and now it has completely run out.
"It will be much easier for militants to lure youths to join them and spiral insecurity across the whole region," Trust Mlambo, head of operations in the area for WFP, told the BBC.
Notorious around the world for kidnapping more than 200 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok more than a decade ago, Boko Haram has taken thousands of people captive during its raids and forced more than a million from their village homes.

  • Canada follows France and UK with plan to recognise Palestinian state | BBC News
Prime Minister Mark Carney has said Canada plans to recognise a Palestinian state in September, becoming the third G7 nation to make such an announcement in recent days.
Carney said the move depends on democratic reforms, including the Palestinian Authority holding elections next year without Hamas.
His remarks come a day after the UK announced it would recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel agreed to a ceasefire and other conditions and a week after France unveiled a similar plan.
Israel's foreign ministry rejected Canada's announcement, calling it "a reward for Hamas". Most countries - 147 of the UN's 193 member states - formally recognise a Palestinian state.
US President Donald Trump said Canada’s move threatens a US-Canada trade deal.

  • Russian strikes kill six and hit apartment block, Ukrainian officials say | BBC News
At least six people were killed and more than 50 others were wounded in a barrage of Russian drones and missiles that struck several districts of Kyiv and brought down an apartment block, Ukrainian officials said.
One of the dead was a six-year-old boy, and Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said the death toll could rise, with damage in more than two dozen locations.
The high-pitched hum of Russian drones could be heard for hours over the capital, interrupted by the occasional loud thunder clap of a missile strike.
Russian attacks have continued despite US President Donald Trump's threat to impose tougher sanctions on Moscow if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree to a ceasefire by 8 August.
