  • Donald Trump to hit India with 25% tariffs | BBC News
The US will impose 25% tariffs on goods imported from India "plus an unspecified penalty" for buying Russian energy and weapons, US President Donald Trump has said.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, he said the measures would take effect from from 1 August, the US deadline for a trade deal. He described India as a friend whose "tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the world”.
He also criticised India's purchases of Russian military equipment and energy "when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE”.
There was no immediate response from India, which has been negotiating a trade deal with the US for months. Last year, the US had a trade deficit of $45.8bn (£26.1bn) with India.

  • Families of Israeli hostages react to UK move to recognise a Palestinian state | BBC News
The families of Israeli hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza have said the plan by the UK and other European countries to recognise a Palestinian state "validates terrorism".
On Tuesday Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the UK would take the step in September unless Israel met certain conditions including agreeing a ceasefire and reviving the prospect of a two-state solution.
In the last 24 hours, more than 100 people have been killed in Gaza and seven more have died from malnutrition, the Hamas-run health ministry reported.
The UN has said at least 500 trucks of aid a day are needed in Gaza. On Tuesday only 115 were let in.

  • Greece warns of ‘invasion’ as it halts asylum on Med route | BBC News
Greece has started detaining all migrants who arrive on small boats from northern Africa and denying them the right to apply for asylum.
The new migration minister, Thanos Plevris, said the measure was justified, for three months initially, because the island of Crete has seen a surge in arrivals from Libya at the height of tourist season.
Human rights lawyers have criticised the move.
The right for anyone to request protection, or asylum, is inscribed in EU and international law and in the constitution of Greece itself.

  • UK to recognise Palestinian state unless Israel agrees Gaza ceasefire | BBC News
The United Kingdom will recognise a Palestinian state at a United Nations meeting in September unless Israel takes “substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza” including agreeing a ceasefire. The announcement was made by the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, following an emergency meeting of his cabinet.
It adds to growing international calls to move rapidly towards the creation of a Palestinian state. They have been fuelled by outrage over the suffering in Gaza and a widespread view that the Israel-Palestinian conflict cannot be resolved without implementation of the long-proposed two-state solution.
Around 140 countries have formally recognised a Palestinian state. France recently became the first permanent member of the UN Security Council and G7 country to say it would do so at the UN meeting in September.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benajamin Netanyahu condemned the UK announcement, saying it “rewards Hamas” and punishes its victims.
It came as A UN-backed food security body gas warned that "the worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out” in Gaza. Israel insists there are no restrictions on aid deliveries and no starvation there. It blames Hamas for problems with aid deliveries there.
Earlier, Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry said more than 60,000 Palestinians had been killed since Israel began its offensive in the territory following the Hamas attacks of October 2023.

  • UK will recognise Palestinian state in September unless Israel meets conditions, says PM | BBC News
The UK will recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel meets certain conditions, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said.
He said the recognition will happen at the UN unless the Israeli government takes "substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza", including a ceasefire and a commitment to a long-term peace process that delivers a two-state solution.
It comes as Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry said more than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel's offensive began, including 112 in the past 24 hours.
A UN-backed food security body earlier said "the worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out" in Gaza, with "mounting evidence" of widespread starvation.
Israel insists there are no restrictions on aid deliveries and that there is "no starvation".
