  • Donald Trump orders officials to release Epstein court documents after mounting pressure | BBC News
Donald Trump said he has ordered the justice department to produce additional documents related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
It's unclear if Trump is authorising the public release of these documents, but such action would typically require the approval of a court.
It came shortly after Trump said he would sue The Wall Street Journal over an article alleging that a "bawdy" birthday greeting bearing Trump's name was sent to Epstein in 2003, before the late financier was charged with sex crimes.
The letter, which the newspaper claims was sent on Epstein's 50th birthday, has been decried by Trump as a "fake".
Epstein died in a New York prison cell in 2019 as he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges.

  • Why is the UK government allowing 16 and 17 year olds to vote in the next election? | BBC Newscast
The voting age at the next general election will be lowered across the UK to 16 for the first time.
Labour's election manifesto last year pledged to lower the voting age to 16 - in line with Scottish and Welsh elections. The Prime Minister has said 16 and 17-year-olds are "old enough to go out to work, they are old enough to pay taxes". The policy has been criticised by the Conservatives and Reform party. Adam and Chris are joined by Professor Jane Green - Director of Nuffield Politics Research Centre and President of the British Polling Council.
And, MP Diane Abbott has been suspended by the Labour Party pending an investigation into comments she made about racism, the BBC understands. Labour said it would not be commenting "while this investigation is ongoing".

  • Babies from three people’s DNA prevents hereditary disease | BBC News
Doctors say that eight babies have been born in the UK using genetic material from three people to prevent devastating and often fatal conditions.
The method, pioneered by UK scientists, combines the egg and sperm from a mum and dad with a second egg from a donor woman.
The technique has been legal here for a decade - but there is now proof it is leading to children born free of incurable mitochondrial disease.

  • More than 350 people killed in Syria clashes | BBC News
More than 350 people are reported to have been killed in sectarian clashes between Bedouin tribes - loyalist to the Islamist government - and the Druze religious minority in Syria.
Syria's interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa has said it is his "priority" to protect the country's Druze citizens, after Israel vowed to destroy government forces it accused of attacking members of the religious minority in Suweida province.
In his first televised statement since Israel's air strikes on Damascus on Wednesday, Ahmed al-Sharaa also warned that Syrians were not afraid of war.
Syrian state media reported that the military was withdrawing from Suweida under a ceasefire agreement with Druze leaders. But it is not clear whether that will hold.

  • Inside America's space missile tracking hub | BBC News
The BBC were given access to the nerve centre where America's space force can track missiles fired from anywhere in the world.
Located at Buckley Space Force base in Colorado, the team have been on high-alert in recent weeks, after Iran fired a salvo of missiles towards the US military base at Al Udeid in Qatar.
In recent years, they've been tracking movements in the middle east and Europe, providing a "strategic and tactical missile warning" to all US and allied forces, according to Colonel Ann Hughes.
The base will form a key part of President Trump’s plans for a US missile defence shield – known as the Golden Dome.
The US President has earmarked $175 billion for the ambitious programme – inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome air defence system.
The creation of the US Space Force five years ago is proof that space is now a warfighting domain. Both China and Russia have tested anti satellite missiles as well as ways of jamming their communications.
