  • US threatens 'severe' tariffs on Russia if no Ukraine deal within 50 days | BBC News
US President Donald Trump says he will introduce "very severe" secondary tariffs of 100% if no ceasefire deal is reached with Ukraine within 50 days.
Trump said he wanted to see the war in Ukraine end, adding that he's "disappointed" with Russia's President Vladimir Putin.
He went on to praise the Nato defence alliance, mentioning recent agreements where countries upped their contributions on defence and security-related spending from 2% of a country's GDP to 5% by 2035.
Speaking to press at the White House during a visit from Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump also said that the US makes the best equipment, the best missiles and "the best everything" and that they will be sending the weapons to Nato and that "they will be paying for them".

  • Constance Marten and Mark Gordon guilty of manslaughter over baby's death | BBC News
Constance Marten and Mark Gordon have been found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter over their baby's death.
The couple went on the run in January 2023 and were brought to police attention after a placenta wrapped in a towel was found on the back seat of a burning car near Bolton in England.
The couple's baby, Victoria, was found dead in a shopping bag in Brighton in 2023 after they spent two months trying to evade authorities.
Marten and Gordon were previously found guilty of concealing the birth of a child and perverting the course of justice. The retrial, which concluded on Monday was on outstanding charges.
Chief prosecutor Jaswant Narwal said they "have shown little remorse for their actions, using different antics to frustrate and delay court proceedings".

  • Gaza death toll past 58k, says health ministry - as Israel admits strike "error" | BBC News
Ten people, including six children, have been killed in an Israeli air strike while waiting to fill water containers in central Gaza on Sunday, emergency service officials say.
Eyewitnesses said a drone fired a missile at a crowd queuing with empty jerry cans next to a water tanker in al-Nuseirat refugee camp.
The Israeli military said there had been a "technical error" with a strike targeting an Islamic Jihad "terrorist" that caused the munition to fall dozens of metres from the target. The incident is under review, the military added.
The death toll in Gaza has now past 58k, according to The Gaza Health Ministry.
On Sunday US President Donald Trump said he hoped that indirect ceasefire talks taking place between Israel and Hamas in Qatar, would be "straightened out over the next week."

  • US President Donald Trump expected to make 'major' statement on support for Ukraine | BBC News
US President Donald Trump has signalled he will make a "major" statement on Ukraine on Monday, amid what appears to be his increasing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The US president seemed irritated by Moscow’s lack of action towards a ceasefire in Ukraine, telling reporters on Sunday that "Putin … talks nice and then he bombs everybody in the evening".
He also said that "sophisticated" military equipment will be heading to Ukraine, including Patriot air defence missiles.
Trump will meet Nato chief Mark Rutte today at the White House, and US special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, is in Kyiv this week for talks.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that it is "very important" that the US "continues mediation efforts as part of Russian-Ukrainian settlement".

  • EU delays retaliatory trade tariffs against US | BBC News
The EU's retaliatory tariffs on US exports have been delayed again, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced.
The countermeasures, which were due to start on Tuesday, came in response to US President Donald Trump's initial import taxes on steel and aluminium.
The EU's retaliation, which would have hit € 21bn worth of US goods, was first suspended in March. This break has been extended until early August, von der Leyen told a press conference on Sunday.
EU trade ministers are expected to meet in Brussels on Monday to discuss how to respond.
