Bosnia and Herzegovina has marked the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, where around 8,000 people, mostly Bosnian Muslim men and boys, were systematically murdered by Bosnian-Serb forces.

  • At least 10 children killed by Israeli airstrike while queuing at Gaza medical centre | BBC News
At least 15 Palestinians, including 10 children, have been killed in an Israeli strike while queuing for nutritional supplements outside a medical clinic in central Gaza.
US-based aid group Project Hope, which runs the clinic, said the attack was a blatant violation of international law. The Israeli military said it struck a "Hamas terrorist" and regretted any harm to civilians. The victims were among 66 people reportedly killed in Israeli strikes on the same day.
Project Hope said the attack in front of its Altayara health clinic in Deir al-Balah happened as patients gathered outside, waiting to receive treatment for malnutrition, infections and chronic illnesses.
Graphic footage posted on social media, which was verified by the BBC, showed the immediate aftermath of the attack, with adults and young children lying in a street, some severely wounded and others not moving.
At the mortuary of nearby al-Aqsa hospital, relatives of those killed wept as they wrapped the dead children in white shrouds and body bags before performing funeral prayers. One woman told the BBC that her pregnant niece Manal, and her daughter Fatima had been killed.
Project Hope's president and CEO, Rabih Torbay, said the aid group's clinics were "a place of refuge in Gaza where people bring their small children, women access pregnancy and postpartum care, people receive treatment for malnutrition, and more".
"Yet, this morning, innocent families were mercilessly attacked as they stood in line waiting for the doors to open," he added. "Horrified and heartbroken cannot properly communicate how we feel anymore."
"This is a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, and a stark reminder that no-one and no place is safe in Gaza, even as ceasefire talks continue. This cannot continue."
Unicef boss Catherine Russell said: "The killing of families trying to access life-saving aid is unconscionable."
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that it struck a member of the elite Nukhba forces of Hamas's military wing who had taken part in the 7 October 2023 attack on Israel.
The airstrike took place as Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu left Washington after talks with President Trump without reaching agreement on a new ceasefire plan in Gaza.

  • UK and France unveil new 'one in, one out' migrant deal | BBC News
The UK will begin returning migrants arriving in small boats to France within weeks under a new pilot scheme, Sir Keir Starmer has said.
Under the "one in, one out" deal, some arrivals would be detained and returned to France and in exchange the UK would accept an equivalent number of asylum seekers, subject to security checks and provided they had not tried to enter the UK illegally.
Speaking at a press conference alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, Sir Keir said the plan would demonstrate that trying to make the Channel crossing would "be in vain".
He did not confirm how many people would be returned or accepted during the pilot.

  • Caster Semenya denied a fair hearing over sex eligibility rules, court says | BBC News
Caster Semenya's right to a fair hearing was violated by the Swiss Federal Supreme Court when she lost a 2020 appeal against World Athletics regulations that effectively barred her from competing, Europe's top court has ruled.
The double 800m Olympic champion won a partial victory at the European Court of Human Rights in her long legal battle over athletics' sex eligibility rules.
Semenya, 34, was born with differences of sexual development (DSD) and has been unable to compete in the 800m since World Athletics brought in rules in 2019 restricting testosterone levels for track events from 400m up to the mile.
The South African middle distance runner believes World Athletics has shown discrimination against athletes with DSD by insisting they reduce testosterone levels in order to be eligible.
    World Athletics declined to comment.

  • Donald Trump threatens Brazil with 50% tariff | BBC News
US President Donald Trump said he was planning to impose a 50% tax on goods made in Brazil, escalating his fight with the South American country.
He announced the plan in his latest tariff letter, which was shared on social media.
In it, Trump accuses Brazil of "attacks" on US tech companies and of conducting a "witch hunt" against former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, who is facing prosecution over his alleged role in a plot to overturn the 2022 election.
Responding in a social media post, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said an increase in tariffs on Brazil would be reciprocated, and he warned against any interference in the nation's judicial system.

  • Israel will continue attacks on Hamas if they don't agree to ceasefire - Israeli official | BBC News
An Israeli official said his country would agree a permanent end to its offensive in Gaza if the Palestinian group Hamas agrees to an initial 60-day ceasefire and disarms.
The official said Israel would continue its attacks if they didn't do so.
Hamas said ongoing talks were difficult and accused Israel which ended a previous ceasefire agreement of "intransigence".
In Gaza, Israeli attacks are continuing across the territory, reportedly killing 23 people, including several children.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in Washington on Wednesday, where he said he and President Trump were in lock-step to secure a hostage deal, but not at any price.
Four days of talks in Doha, Qatar, have not resulted in a breakthrough, but President Trump suggested on Wednesday a deal was close.

  • What Can the UK Government Actually Afford? | BBC Newscast
Can the UK government afford everything it wants to do?
Adam is joined by BBC economics editor Faisal Islam and BBC health editor Hugh Pym to discuss the news that resident doctors, who used to be called junior doctors, have announced strike dates for later this summer. The government says it won’t reopen negotiations with the British Medical Association, which represents resident doctors.
Plus, the chair of the inquiry into the infected blood scandal says that victims have been harmed by delays to the compensation scheme. The government announced £11.8 billion pounds to fund compensation at the autumn budget, but the inquiry’s chair, Sir Brian Langstaff says there are “obvious injustices” in the way the compensation scheme has been set out.
