There could be six million new HIV infections and four million more Aids related deaths globally by 2029, according to the UN.

It comes after US President Donald Trump cut aid funding earlier this month as well as other drastic cuts from a number of donors.

The "phenomenal progress" in tackling the illness risks being reversed, the UN body in charge of fighting HIV/Aids added.

US President Donald Trump said he was planning to impose a 50% tax on goods made in Brazil, escalating his fight with the South American country.

He announced the plan in his latest tariff letter, which was shared on social media.

In it, Trump accuses Brazil of "attacks" on US tech companies and of conducting a "witch hunt" against former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, who is facing prosecution over his alleged role in a plot to overturn the 2022 election.

Responding in a social media post, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said an increase in tariffs on Brazil would be reciprocated, and he warned against any interference in the nation's judicial system.

An Israeli official said his country would agree a permanent end to its offensive in Gaza if the Palestinian group Hamas agrees to an initial 60-day ceasefire and disarms.

The official said Israel would continue its attacks if they didn't do so. 

Hamas said ongoing talks were difficult and accused Israel which ended a previous ceasefire agreement of "intransigence".

In Gaza, Israeli attacks are continuing across the territory, reportedly killing 23 people, including several children.

The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in Washington on Wednesday, where he said he and President Trump were in lock-step to secure a hostage deal, but not at any price.

Four days of talks in Doha, Qatar, have not resulted in a breakthrough, but President Trump suggested on Wednesday a deal was close.

At least two people have been killed and 16 injured after an overnight Russian attack hit Ukraine's capital Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

The attack involved 18 missiles and about 400 drones, primarily targeting the capital, Zelensky added.

Authorities in Kyiv said drone wreckage hit the roof of a residential building in the central Shevchenkivskyi district and fires burned across the city.

Russia's military has not commented on the reported latest attack.

The government says it won’t reopen negotiations with the British Medical Association, which represents resident doctors.

The government announced £11.8 billion pounds to fund compensation at the autumn budget, but the inquiry’s chair, Sir Brian Langstaff says there are “obvious injustices” in the way the compensation scheme has been set out.

Western Europe saw its hottest June on record, a climate change watchdog has said.

The European Copernicus Climate Change Service said temperatures in the region hit an average of 20.5C (68.9F).

It also said that last month was the third warmest June globally.

Ten years ago, the arrest of hundreds of Chinese human rights lawyers began in a nationwide crackdown, known as the 709 incident.

At least 10 were convicted of crimes such as “subversion of state power” and given jail terms, while dozens more have been subjected to surveillance, harassment and the revocation of their professional licences in the years since.

The lawyers have long been a target of China's communist party. One of those lawyers was Wang Quanzhang, who was detained for more than four years.

A decade later, he still faces daily harassment on the streets of Beijing.

The son of a British couple detained in Iran has said he broke down in tears when he learned of their arrest and has not heard from them in six months.

Craig and Lindsay Foreman were on a "once-in-a-lifetime" motorbike trip around the world when they were arrested in January and later charged with espionage, which the family denies.

Their son Joe Bennett told the BBC: "I want to be crystal clear, my parents aren't spies, they're not political players, they aren't criminals. They're Mum and Dad."

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said it was continuing to assist the family and raise the case directly with Iranian authorities.

President Volodymyr Zelensky says Ukraine has been hit by the biggest ever aerial attack from Russia.

Zelensky condemned the "telling attack", adding: "It comes precisely at a time when so many efforts have been made to achieve peace, to establish a ceasefire, and yet only Russia continues to rebuff them all."

The overnight strike came after President Donald Trump said the US would send more weapons to Kyiv - a reversal of last week's suspension which US media said Trump had not known about.

On Tuesday, the US leader expressed growing frustration at Russian President Vladimir Putin.
