Two weeks after US President Donald Trump declared the 12-day war between Iran and Israel was over, a seemingly fragile ceasefire appears to be holding.

There are also reports Iran has turned to China in the hopes of acquiring advanced military capability, including J-10C fighter jets.

  • Israel-Gaza ceasefire talks 'going well', says US President Donald Trump | BBC News
US President Donald Trump has said he thinks talks to end the war in Gaza have been "going along very well", as he hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington DC.
Trump also expressed confidence that Hamas was willing to end the 21-month conflict.
"They want to meet and they want to have that ceasefire," he told to reporters at the White House.
The meeting came after the latest rounds of indirect ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas in Qatar ended without a breakthrough, though negotiations were expected to continue this week.

  • Donald Trump delays higher tariffs but announces new taxes for some countries | BBC News
President Donald Trump has officially delayed imposing higher tariffs on US imports, while sending letters to 14 countries including Japan and South Korea detailing the levies they face.
The latest development comes as a 90-day pause the White House placed on some of its most aggressive import taxes was set to end this week.
The president renewed his threat of a 25% tax on products entering the country from Japan and South Korea and shared a batch of other letters to world leaders warning of levies from 1 August.
Higher tariffs had been set to come into effect on 9 July, having previously been suspended with White House officials saying they would look to strike trade deals.

  • Linking Texas death toll to cuts in Weather Service is “depraved lie” says White House | BBC News
The White House has defended the US National Weather Service after claims it failed to provide sufficIent warnings about the devastating floods in Texas. Questions have been raised about whether cuts to the service have undermined its effectiveness.
More than 100 people, among them more than two dozen children, are known to have died after heavy rain caused sudden flash floods in parts of the state.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told a briefing: "Unfortunately, in the wake of this once in a generation natural disaster, we have seen many falsehoods pushed by Democrats such as Senator Chuck Schumer and some members of the media… blaming President Trump for these floods is a depraved lie, and it serves no purpose during this time of national mourning." She claimed the National Weather Service had done its job, providing precise forecasts and warnings of the impending disaster.
Search efforts are continuing for a fourth day in Texas, with dozens of people still missing. Camp Mystic, a girls' summer camp in the county, confirmed that at least 27 girls and staff had lost their lives, with 10 children and one counsellor still missing.
The White House says President Trump is planning to visit the area this week.

  • Could 'degrowth' save the world? | BBC News
A group of academics and activists are questioning the possibility of endless economic growth on a finite planet and are advocating for a bold solution: degrowth.
Originating in France, the degrowth movement has spread to places like Japan, the UK and Barcelona, taking root in academia, grassroots organisations and among university students.
The movement argues for a 'democratisation of the economy' and for collectively managing key resources, like housing.
Critics argue that opposing economic growth is impractical and warn of negative consequences, especially for the most vulnerable.
We take a look at the theory - and ask what the practice might look like.

  • Kenya police fire on advancing crowd of protesters in Nairobi | BBC News
Two people have reportedly died of gunshot wounds after police opened fire during protests in Kenya, the latest in a wave of anti-government rallies that began last year.
Dr Aron Sikuku, a medic at Eagle Nursing Home in Kangemi on the outskirts of Nairobi, told the BBC that two bodies had been taken to the facility and had died from gunshot wounds. He said hundreds of protesters had gathered outside his hospital demanding to take away the bodies.
As of now, there has been no official confirmation of the deaths.
The demonstrations mark the 35th anniversary of the historic Saba Saba (7 July 1990) protests that launched Kenya's push for multiparty democracy.
