  • We Can Grow From What We Are Willing To Share ~ Juston Graber

Our men and women of service are oftentimes put into horrific situations civilians will never understand or process. Decisions are made based on all the factors that are playing on that one moment.

In today's episode Suzi is joined by Juston Graber, Army Combat Veteran, actor, producer and writer to discuss his time before, during and after his service. Juston is very candid and transparent about his journey and discusses in detail one of those very moments in time that change his course of both service and life.

Strap in for this discussion as it does get heavy but we can only grow from what we are willing to share.

In 2022, Juston embarked on an extraordinary endeavor to bring the theatrical production "Enlisted" to life. This captivating play follows an Army unit before, during, and after a combat deployment, shedding light on the absurdities soldiers face in their day-to-day lives. "Enlisted" not only provides a glimpse into military service but also bridges the gap between civilians and veterans through its clever infusion of workplace comedy. http://www.weenlisted.com/

  • Readjustment and Pushing Back on the Medical Model

Suzi is excited to have another Coming Home Well podcaster, Mike Kim, host of Veteran Et Cetera on today to discuss Veteran Readjustment and pushing back on the Medical Model; Being curious and asking questions on what is actually working for our Veteran Community. Suzi and Mike are constantly collaborating and connecting to give voice and experience from different perspectives and treatments. The difference and solidarity in readjustment needs to fully look at before, during and after military service for a person to be seen as a whole individual.

Suzi and Mike also reflect on PTS and how this is a normal reaction to an abnormal situation. The ways a person processes and deals with the situation can be mild, moderate or severe.

What are your thoughts on readjustment? Send Suzi and email. She would love to hear your feedback.

  • Charlotte Rayfield ~ Getting Real About Young Adults With Disabilities

Suzi has the pleasure of speaking with Charlotte Rayfield, dear friend and an incredible young lady. Charlotte is 25 years old and a senior in college and has Cerebral Palsy. She is giving insight from the other side of the narrative in caregiving as the one receiving.

Oftentimes we focus as a society on caregiving for the elderly but what about caregiving for young adults who are disabled? This is a completely different approach and having the knowledge given to us by those receiving the care is empowering to do a better job.

What are your experiences as a young adult receiving care? What feedback can you provide so we as caregivers can do better and be better at providing care?

Email Suzi at [email protected] with your comments and suggestions. She would like to hear what you can teach us as caregivers.

  • Martin Ali Simms - The Neurosequential Model

    Regulate, Relate, Reason

Using somatics to tackle trauma. In today's episode Suzi has the pleasure to speak with Martin Ali Simms, Founder of THE D.O.P.E. Coach Academy about using the neurosequential model to help regulate, relate and reason your mental health. For Martin, trauma at a young age set him on the path of discovery and wellbeing.

    https://www.neurosequential.com/

    Martin's Bio

Martin Simms, Founder of The D.O.P.E. Coach Academy, where wey cultivate Therapeutic experiences through Sports & Exercise by educating & training Coaches how to lead their athletes in emotional regulation, mental resilience, & somatically processing trauma.

After witnessing the tragic heart attack death of his 33 year old neighbor at 14 while playing basketball at his house, being able to navigate school work & sports proved to be an impossible task. Trauma impacted his life early, & shaped everything that followed.

Struggling to make sense of what he witnessed throughout young adulthood, he turned to the gym as his profession. His motivation was to help prevent future heart attacks, but he found that the emotional & psychological barriers had as much to do with his clients being unhealthy as their diet or lack of exercise.

He started studying the brain. He studied with world-renowned Dr. Bruce Perry on how childhood traumas can linger for life & started implementing the Neurosequential Model into Youth Sports & Exercise Programs. His program was nominated by the Jr. NBA for 2021 Program of the Year in its 1st year for the focus on maintaining the participants' Mental Health at the beginning of the Pandemic.

  • Learning Honesty Through Equine Therapy

Gentling the soul through equine therapy. Suzi talks about an organization dear to her heart, Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue and how horses are helping veterans to heal. Horses live in the moment, and they are sensitive to energy levels, so it is important to be honest about how you are feeling in that moment.

Your thoughts, feelings and actions must be the same in order to be honest. If you are being honest with how you are feeling the horse will respond in kindness. One has to learn to be congruent, consistent and how to pressure and release when interacting with the horse. One practice used is a "Please and Thank you" approach.

Listen in as Suzi gives examples of how they work to gentle the wild horses and use this practice to help veterans to heal.

    Jon's Bio

At 19 years old, Jon joined the military to work in communication in the

army for 4 years. This led to his remuster to logistics where he was a

member of Special Operation Forces. After leaving the military, Jon transitioned to a police officer in a major city in Canada.

Jon dedicated himself to others and began to show signs of mental fatigue.

After serving the country for over fifteen years, Jon was diagnosed with

Post-traumatic stress disorder. During this dark time, he chose to show the world the inside of the mind of someone suffering from PTS(I) due to his service. His book, Operation:Wired Differently was written and published.

This was the start of his mental health advocacy focusing on peer support, mental health, and healing. Jon enrolled at the Life Coach School of Brooke Castillo; his certification followed.

As part of his healing Jon began a proactive project creating logo-ed clothing to raise funds for various groups. His goal: to get rid of the stigma within the uniform, and within civilian populations. But he wanted more.

Jon’s lifelong passion for the arts—including poetry which he writes—complements his boots-on-the-ground skills. Jon is married and an active father to two young boys. He has learned to prioritize his family, manage his complex stress injury, and continue his service to others through consistent and healthy dedication.

  • Honoring Our Ability To Thrive

Are you coping to feel better or are you thriving and growing? Do you use the same approach or tactic to resolve every problem or situation?

Suzi challenges you to make a list of other words to describe how you might be feeling. For example, instead of saying "I am scared to start this new job" which can activate adrenaline and your stress response, use the word opportunity: "I see this new job as an opportunity to grow and learn". Words do matter and it is how you can use them to help grow and thrive.

    Everyone deserves to THRIVE!
