Get consistent and stay on a program. And once you feel confident that you've got it down at the level that you can do it now—whether it's coming to the temple every day or whenever you can do it on a regular basis, say, once a month, or whatever you can add into your schedule—once you've achieved consistency in a certain level of practice, then move your foot to the next rung.

That's Bhaktivinoda's advice in the Caitanya-sikṣāmṛta. He said, "If you try to run up the ladder too fast, you're going to slip and fall off. If you're too timid and you don't put your foot on the rung, and you say, 'Oh, I can't do it,' that's illegal." Yes, yes, you can! Just get comfortable. At least put your foot on the first rung. We say, "Something more than zero, not less than one." And once you're confident there, he says, "Then move your foot to the next rung and move up."

There's no fun staying down at a lower level and wallowing in it. Sometimes people who beg for a living have to look forlorn all day long, because otherwise people won't give them money. And then they have to stay in that position because that's their livelihood. So, don't make a livelihood out of being non-advanced. Just genuinely advance and be humble, and then appreciate the fact that you've got unlimited steps you can take, and try to move up. That's the excitement of life with devotional service.
