  • How The Conversation (News) Began with Lisa Watts

Today, we live in a world of fake news and alternative facts - an infodemic where decisions are made on emotion not evidence. In worldwide coverage of the covid-19 pandemic, there has been increasing misinformation about coronavirus. As consumers and concerned citizens, where do we go for trustworthy information?

My guest this week, Lisa Watts, describes herself as a long-term "news junkie". Having held multiple senior roles in digital media, when the idea for The Conversation was pitched to her, it was immediately compelling. Now with more than 10,000 donors, The Conversation is a news outlet operating on a not-for-profit basis, bringing independent, research-backed journalism to the general public.

In episode 195 of Be The Drop, recorded LIVE from Pause Fest, Lisa and I discuss the death of traditional media, the birth of The Conversation news outlet and she reveals how her not-for-profit team got their fledgling platform out to tens of thousands of fellow news junkies.

  • The Uluru Statement: Changing The First Nations' Narrative with Thomas Mayor
Some years ago, while living in Broken Hill, I was privileged to work closely with the local aboriginal community. It was through this work that I learned the very real and tangible power of storytelling to bridge gaps and help foster positive change. As a non-aboriginal Australian, this experience helped motivate my desire to understand my Australian story in a way that connects to, acknowledges past hurts and celebrates the incredible stories of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tribes.
Thomas Mayor is the National Indigenous Officer at the Maritime Union of Australia, and a passionate advocate of the Uluru Statement and the three reforms contained within it. In fact, the Statement is an invitation to all Australians - to "walk with us" and support the proposed reforms to create a better future for the entire Australian nation. If you believe that the First Nations deserve to have a voice, this interview with Thomas will help you understand how to show your support.
In episode 194 of Be The Drop, recorded LIVE at Adelaide Writers' Week, Thomas recites the entire Uluru Statement - which he knows by heart. He explains the journey to create his book, Finding the Heart of the Nation, shares some helpful resources and extends an invitation to join the movement.----Are you considering starting a podcast? • Audio vs Video Editing And The RodeCaster Pro
I've been involved in video production for nearly 20 years and audio production for 5 years, over which time I've learnt and continue to learn techniques to help craft story. I've self taught myself tools like Adobe Premiere and RODECaster Pro but my primary role is not editing, it's marketing and storytelling. However, through my experience I have learnt the importance and power of good editing to help tell a compelling story.
Alex Plisko is an experienced video editor, currently working for the Nine Network in South Australia, editing the nightly news. So if anyone knows how to tell a story, that quickly engages attention, it's Alex. He is now also branching into podcasting and is soon to launch his first podcast, Trailer Island.
In episode 193 of Be The Drop, Alex talks about his new audio editing tool, the RODECaster Pro which is helping him kick-start him journey into podcasting. He also shares a range of insights into audio vs video editing and how beginner editors need to feel comfortable about making mistakes.----Are you considering starting a podcast? • Wabi Sabi: Embracing Imperfection with Michelle Cox
In traditional Japanese philosophy, wabi sabi (侘寂) is a world view that sees beauty in imperfection. A concept that as we muddle through remote working and home schooling during COVID-19 restrictions, I have seen an increased number of people embrace. Business meetings from home via Zoom have increased our empathy for life's imperfections, as we navigate interruptions from dogs, children and technology issues. My guest this week has been guided by this philosophy for a number of years.
Michelle Cox describes herself as a "reluctant author" even though she has just written and launched three books in her Wabi Sabi Series. Michelle is passionate about embracing the unconventional and challenging the status quo. Her personal journey has been full of challenges, from cancer to considerable loss. But these 'imperfections' in life are what make her human and motivated her to release her book series.
In episode 192 of Be The Drop, recorded LIVE from Pause Fest, Michelle talks about the concept of wabi sabi - embracing imperfection and how the book series came to fruition. She also shares her thoughts on the power of simplicity in communication.----Are you considering starting a podcast? At Narrative Marketing, we deliver a full range of podcast production options. • The Future of Personalised Video Content Using Ai Technology
I've been passionate about the power of video content for a long time. Being visual, it's possible to achieve strong emotive connection. However, with high volumes of video now used in marketing, it can be hard to make your video stand out. One answer may lie in advanced AI software, used to create extremely personalised video messaging, with tailored content produced in real-time.
Nathan Musson is the founder of eMoo Media, which has developed a solution to completely personalise video content. Through AI, the footage and content is selected and editing using the viewers specific profile information. Using personality, behaviour and intent elements the software creates programmatic storytelling videos delivered at mass scale.
In episode 191 of Be The Drop, recorded LIVE from Pause Fest, Nathan blows my mind with examples of personalised video content this software has created. Nathan also shares valuable insight into the power of personalisation.----Are you considering starting a podcast? At Narrative Marketing, we deliver a full range of podcast production options. The digital landscape has changed dramatically in the past decade. Instagram, for example, was launched in October 2010. Now, it's estimated to be worth more than $100 billion. There's a whole category of people who earn their living by being Instagram influencers. Digital makes up roughly half of all advertising spend. But with all this transformation has come data privacy issues, cyber-bullying and the birth of social media law.
Paul Gordon, is a Partner at Wallmans Lawyers. Paul is one of the few lawyers in South Australia specialising in social media law, which he has been doing since 2012, which in social media years is a long long time. In fact, that takes us right back to when Facebook bought Instagram.
In episode 190 of Be The Drop, Paul talks about some of the challenges businesses face in today's world of social media. He outlines key issues to be aware of when sharing content online, plus insights into how social media law is keeping us safe and engaged online.----Are you considering starting a podcast? • How Playful Work Practices Can Improve Outcomes With Daniel Teitelbaum
I believe that we can absolutely take our work seriously but still have fun whilst doing it; actually if you're not able to have fun and implement playful work practices, I'm not sure what's the point! As adults, we sometimes forget how important it is to remain playful and curious about how we learn and interact with others.
Daniel Teitelbaum initially studied philosophy before helping to set up The School of Life branch in Australia, where he delivered the organisation's playful workshops. Through this work and his previous role as a Youth Leader, Daniel discovered the power of play to help develop better ways of thinking and working. Daniel recently launched his own business Playful Thinking, to help people and organisations think playfully.
In episode 189 of Be The Drop, recorded LIVE from Pause Fest, Daniel talks about the importance of being earnest. He also shares numerous and incredibly useful tips for incorporating playful work practices to improve outcomes.----Are you considering starting a podcast?
