The Athlete Void in life after sports is real. Are you aware of what the Athlete Void is?
First off the definition of "void" is: a completely empty space. Regardless of how long you last played competitive sports, do you feel an emptiness left by sports, and have yet to find something to replace it?
The Athlete Void is that large element of your life that sports took up, and without it you feel empty, lost, unfulfilled, un-successful, and a feeling that there has GOT to be something more, something greater for you in this lifetime.
Now, some athletes fill the void with drugs, alcohol, sex or other life destructing additions they use to get the HIGH they once had in sports. Most however, fall in line with what society or others say they should do like, get into coaching, get a comfy job, get married, and so on. So they do what others say thinking it may fill the void left by sports, except none of these things can fill the Athlete Void like sports once did.
To fill the void, it requires self awareness, training, coaching, hard work, belief, confidence and a playbook. All things you have done, or had, before as an athlete.
8 year NFL veteran, Greg Camarillo knows this all too well. He lived with this reality and struggled with filling the void in the new game of life after sports. Greg, a Stanford University graduate is now doing what he loves, being around sports and athletes as the Assistant Director of Scholar-Athlete Development for the University of San Diego. He is also hosts a podcast 2 Pro's and a Joe, and is a co-host of Football Night in San Diego which airs after the NFL games on Sunday nights.
Yet, it was the passing of yet another athlete due to mental health challenges in life after sports, that inspired Greg to post a tweet that quickly went viral. His message was clear, athletes struggle when their careers are over. It was this tweet that brought us together.
In this episode, we discuss Greg's athletic journey from being a walk-on at Stanford, to spending 8 years in the NFL, to his transition to life after sports. You will learn his insight and advise for filling the Athlete Void and how to make sure you are aligning what you love with what you do for a living.
