Jarrod Barnes was the first NCAA Division I football player in history to be enrolled in a Doctorate program at school while on an active football roster. He new football would go only so far.

However, he still had a dream to make it into the NFL. He did all the right things, attended a Power 5 school, played for top tier coaches, and tried out for all 32 NFL teams.

The result? He made it into the NFL, however not in the way you may be thinking. His path to reaching the pinnacle in his sport was not linear.

  • How to Take Massive Action to Design Your Future: Former NFL Player and Army Green Beret Nate Boyer

As an athlete you sought out a challenge, wrote your goals out, found a guide (Coach) to help you plan and take the action necessary to implement and accomplish your goals.

Where many of us get hung up in life after sports is when we are unsure of what our next challenge is. We loved sports. We know how to complete and feel alive when we are working to accomplish our goals, yet do not know where to channel our athletic drive outside of sport.

Further more, we often lack the guide (Coach) to help us plan and execute. We are now the Coach and the Athlete, meaning we have to draw up the strategy and execute it at the same time.

In Episode 26, I talk with Nate Boyer a former US Army Green Beret and NFL football player, turned actor, film maker and philanthropist.

Nate talks about his transition from the Army to Football and then to his next chapter in life after sports. What you will learn is he has done many of these major things in his life by taking massive action first.

This includes the action he took to reach out to former NFL Quarterback Colin Kaepernick after he sat silently on the San Francisco 49ers bench in protest of police brutality on people of color.

Listen in to Nate share his journey from tours in Iraq and playing football at Texas to channeling his athletic fire into new ventures in life after sports.

  • Athletic Identity Addition: Are you addicted to being an athlete?

Are you a former athlete who struggles with what truly fulfills you in your life after sports?

    Me too!

Jobs, relationships, family, money, material things are common things to have, but fulfillment, meaning and purpose are crazy rare in today's society.

As an athlete I had a purpose, and I was laser focused on it. I was completely fulfilled and could have been truly satisfied being an athlete for the rest of my life.

But, like you, my career ended.

What I didn't realize until later was I had developed an addiction to the "high" I had as an athlete. My identity was so wrapped up in what I did versus who I was, that when my competitive career ended I found myself doing things and making decisions in my life to feel that same high I had as an athlete.

However, my decisions were not giving me the same high or fulfillment in life.

Have you struggled in this way? If so, please dive into this longer than normal Quick Huddle to learn about the addiction many of us face and how to work through it.

Even if we do take a step toward our vision we often pack a Plan B for the ride. Just in case it does not work out. Nate is a former NFL football player turned entrepreneur who was featured on ABC’s hit show the Shark Tank. In this episode you will learn: How he went from Yale University to the NFL. • EP 19 Quick Huddle: Be Present with the Athlete You Are Today

Has-Been. Weekend Warrior. Re-living the glory days. Names and phrases often given to former athletes who are trying to hang on to who they once were.

Do you miss being an athlete? Still trying to hang on to the physical, mental, or emotional piece of performing as an athlete?

Time to wake up my friend. That ship has sailed.

However there is power in remembering who you were as an athlete and using it to be present with yourself and your goals today.

This episode will help remind you to look in the mirror and see the athlete you are today, not the 21 year old version. There is power in being present.

  • EP 18 James Donaldson: NBA All-Star Opens up About Mental Health Struggles

For most of us, it's easy to blend into the crowd. We can step outside and be virtually invisible simply walking down the street.  My guest on Episode 18, James Donaldson however, does not have that luxury. At 7-Foot 2-inches, when he walks out of the house, he gets the stares, the whispers, and the one question he has faced everyday of his life for the past 40+ years, "do you play basketball?" As a 14-year NBA veteran, James has played basketball, and he has done it at the highest level, including being selected to the 1988 All-Star team along with a host of iconic players like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.  Despite being retired for almost 20 years, he cannot hide from his physical stature, not here in the US, nor in China where he has done a lot work as an ambassador for the NBA.  However he had been hiding in plain sight. Until now.  During Thanksgiving of 2017, James was not feeling well. A series of events in his personal life had caused him a lot of stress and pain. Soon they began to take a toll on his mental well-being.  Since that moment, James' life has never been the same.  The best news is, he has survived a very dark time where he felt taking his own life was the only way to get through it all.   He has come to understand his struggles with mental health are not unique to him, thus he is making his whole-self visible to the outside world now in an effort to bring awareness and support to the mental health challenges many young people and athletes are experiencing.  Episode 18 is a story of success, heartbreak, and the power of healing oneself through helping others.  We discuss: His career in the NBA. Making the 1988 All-Star team.  Challenges of being 7 foot 2 inches tall.  His struggles with his mental health.  Breaking free of identity.  Pressures current athletes face.  *If you need emotional support, thinking of suicide, or are concerned about someone else, please call the hotline below 24/7.  National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-8255
