Be With Me: 7 Minutes of Biblical Wonder

On the morning of June 6th, 1944, 6939 Allied ships appeared in the morning mist off Normandy, France. To a man, every German soldier manning the shore defenses was TOTALLY SURPRISED.  Every single one of them was astonished and amazed. They kind of knew an invasion was coming, but they thought ANOTHER DAY, and in ANOTHER PLACE. (Specifically Pas-de-Calais, 125 miles away where the English Channel was narrowest)

In contrast, Our Lord has gone to great trouble to clue us in to the future happenings of heaven and earth. He is sovereign. He is going to bring history to a close. He is in control. And, we are ACCOUNTABLE. So far in Revelation, it has begun with WORSHIP. Now we see the first shots of THE WRATH OF THE LAMB.

The title is a bit of a joke, but consider with me how to be a TRUE WORSHIPPER today:

1. To get the accuracy wrong would be idolatry. To just miss the correct object of our worship is INAPPROPRIATE
2. To get the assessment wrong is heresy.  To miss the revealed characteristic of God is IGNORANT
3. To get the agreement wrong is willfulness. To fail to yield our will to this God is OBSTINANT.

To be a TRUE WORSHIPPER then, let's be accurate as to the object, assessing as to His characteristics, and agreeing in our words and behaviors.  This is true true worship.

God has all power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory and blessing.  He lacks for nothing.  

But, there is one thing God doesn't already possess in infinite magnitude: MY AGREEMENT; My assent that He has all these characteristics. 

In a sense, I can give God ONE MORE THING that He doesn't already have: MY WORSHIP.  He doesn't yet have my little voice crying out from my corner of the world saying, "I AGREE!  You are Everything! I ascribe all this to You! "

Everybody in heaven stops what they are doing and worships because of something they see. We might do well to follow their example.

They see a STANDING Jesus, ready to do business.
They see a SLAIN Jesus, having done some conquering over sin and death
They see a SCROLLED Jesus, having taken from the Father the plans for a sure future that the book of Revelation will unfold.
They see a LION of Jesus, with infinite resources of power ready to bring to bear.
They see a LAMB of Jesus who cared enough to come and take the blame for us.

Similarly, Jesus comes hyper-qualified as the answer to one of the best questions is all of Scripture: "Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?"

John knows it is a critical question.  Somehow it is going to involve the culmination of history as we know it. He weeps before he gets the message that Jesus has the answer for this epic pickle.

Welcome to John's visit to heaven.  There he sees the PLACE from which all the dramatic events of Revelation happen. It starts  with a THRONE, occupied by God the Father. It is majestic, bejeweled, encircled and even the weather cooperates with thunder and lightening and rainbows.

God is seated on His throne.  All is well. All He desires is coming to pass. Judgment is rightfully His. Who is He? God enthroned.  Who are we? We are no match for this.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. A response is required.

There is no such thing as a call to Christianity that is not also a call to a local body of His church that is also responding to His call.  Believer, unbeliever, individual or body of believers, this is an invitation to you.

Then, the Lord invites those who respond to His invitation to a meal.  Let this be one of your goals in life! Those that reject Jesus here are likely not going to pause for a bite at heaven's snack bar with Jesus while they are on the way to judgement. Those who invite Jesus get an invitation. The people in Laodicea are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind and naked.  The problem is that they DON'T KNOW IT.  They think they are rich, prosperous and that they need nothing.  They MIS-ASSESS their nakedness.

There is a way out of this mess.  They have available all of God's riches thru repentance.  It means to change their behavior, change their minds and to change their feelings.
