  • Ep 103: Hunter Johnson of Sawdust and Fire
In this episode, we catch up with Hunter Johnson of the Sawdust and Fire podcast. Hunter and I talked about his whitetail and watefowl season. What Hunter has learned from his retreiever/boxer mix pup, Lankey. Lankey is an incredible tracking dog that has served over 60 hunters either retrieve deer or confirm the deer weren't wounded.
The main topic we talked about was, despite being short: what makes habitat managers so happy? The power went out on Hunter's end and as I waited for his return, my zoom meeting froze.... so that rudely interrupted our conversation, but it's always great catching up with Hunter. Hope you enjoy the show!

  • Ep 102: Zach Haas
In this episode, we catch up with our fellow Land Plan member Zach Haas of Creek Bottom Land Management. Zach and I talk about his whitetail hunt in his home state of Wisconsin, his whitetail hunt in Kentucky, and to top it off his bison hunt in South Dakota. Zach and I also talked about the struggles Wisconsin hunters and land managers face from the state level and the "if its brown its down" mentality.
It was a fascinating conversation to learn about Zach's diversity as a hunter and land managers while learning the different struggles states face.

  • Ep 101: Ty Miller of Small Acre Hunting Podcast
In this episode, we interviewed Ty Miller of Small Acre Hunting Podcast. Ty is from Northern Indiana learning to hunt on 9 acres his parents owned when he was a teenager. Ty owns 22 acres in northern Indiana in an urban-industrial area actively hunting and managing the habitat. We talked about how Ty manages his properpy and how he deals with the public. We explored the deer behavior in a high human pressure area.
Main reason I reached out to Ty was too add to his recent episode, "Why are companie offended by critical thinking?" I wanted to add to the conservation. We understnad buisness is buisness, however hunting and conservation is scared. Is manipulating hunters to buy a particular product really what we need? Do we need thar representing us as a whole? Ty and I had a great conversation about this tricky topic.

In this episode we have one of our fellow Habitat Podcast Land Plan Team members, Phil Lincoln! Phil and I discussed his field trials with his springer spaniels, his ongoing house construction, what he misses about Western hunting, and whitetail hunting strategies he implements in Indiana such as mock scrapes, rope licks, and multiple food plots.
FYI, we mentioned in the episode Phil has a Youtube channel. Apparently it has been lost and the channel we mention is not his.

  • Ep 98 Jesse J. Jackson Jr. Grazing Specailist
In this episode we interviewed a close friend of the family Jesse Jackson Jr. Jesse is a retired grazing specialist working under the Department of Agriculture. Jesse worked all over the country, but in the last 10 years of his employment he served in our corner of the state of south east Iowa. I contacted Jesse over his work in using oak savannas as areas for grazing animals. Encourging landowners to work with what you got and those ideas made dividends! This was a different conversation, but it is something for landowners to ponder to create better habitat and relationships with farmers and ranchers by ressurecting this dying biome we call: Oak Savanna.
