      • People Pleasing Nurse? A 4-7-8 Breath Prayer for God's Approval (Galatians 1:10)

Nurse friend, You picked up the extra shift on your day off. You took the hardest assignment so nobody would complain. You said "I'm fine" when you weren't... again.

If you're a nurse who can't say no, this episode is for you.

People pleasing in nursing looks like dedication. It gets praised. It gets rewarded. And it quietly drains you until there's nothing left for your family, your health, or your time with God.

In this episode, we look at Galatians 1:10 and the question Paul asked himself, one every Christian nurse has to answer: am I trying to win the approval of people, or of God?

        In this episode you'll hear:

        • Real-life examples of people pleasing in nursing, on the unit and at home
        • Why serving people and pleasing people are not the same thing
        • How the need for approval feeds nurse burnout and compassion fatigue
        • How to set boundaries as a Christian nurse without guilt
        • A guided breath prayer using the 4-7-8 breathing pattern to calm your nervous system
        • Today's Breath Prayer (4-7-8 pattern)

Inhale for 4 counts... "Your approval is enough"
          Hold for 7 counts
Exhale for 8 counts... "I serve You, Lord"

Why 4-7-8? A longer exhale activates your parasympathetic nervous system, your body's rest-and-restore mode, and slow-paced breathing supports healthy heart rate variability (HRV), a marker of how well your body recovers from stress. Pair it with Scripture, and your body and your spirit get the same message: you're safe, and you're already approved in Christ.

          Scripture:

"Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ." Galatians 1:10 (NIV)

          Reflect this week:

Where did you say yes this week to earn approval instead of following God's lead? What would change if His approval was truly enough?

        • For the Nurse Who Prays, A Special Invitation [BONUS]

Nurse friend, when was the last time you prayed on shift that wasn't "Lord, just get me through this"? As a nurse, of 20 years, I prayed that very often! In this bonus episode, I invite you into a different prayer and into a special workshop called: One Life: A Guided Biblical Meditation for Nurses.  During this workshop, I will walk you through a breath prayer, explains how biblical meditation calms your nervous system, and asks the question Martha had to face in Luke 10: what lie are you believing?

        • Why Breathing Exercises Don't Work for Burned-Out Nurses (Yet)

You've tried the breathing app, the gratitude journal, the bath, the PTO. And the stress came right back. In this foundation episode, I explain why self-care and nervous system regulation tools don't work when you try them first, and what has to happen before they can.

I share a personal lightbulb moment from my own kitchen: how an overfunctioning autopilot kicks in before you're even aware of it, and why that's your nervous system doing its job, not a character flaw. You'll learn why stress management is a band-aid on a deeper wound, how years of autopilot responses leave your nervous system stuck instead of cycling, and why repairing the root beliefs underneath comes first. Then regulation tools finally work.

This episode builds on Episode 240, where Shan breaks down what autopilot is and the four patterns she sees most in nurses.

          In this episode:

          • Why your body responds to stress before you're even aware of it, and why that's protection, not failure
          • A real-life overfunctioning moment: how a sink of dishes shifts you into overdrive
          • Why self-care and stress management are a band-aid on the wound, not the repair
          • How a stuck nervous system loses its ability to cycle between fight-or-flight and rest-and-digest
          • What "Clarify" means in the CARE Method, and why identity and belief repair come first
          • Why the same breathing, walks, and journaling finally work after repair
          • Two client stories showing what changes when repair comes before regulation

The To-Don't List: Permission to Stop Doing — with Elizabeth A. (Part 2 of 2)

This is part two of my conversation with Elizabeth A. — if you haven't listened to part one yet, start there first. These two episodes are meant to be heard together: part one is the awakening, part two is what to actually do about it.

Elizabeth introduces her "to-don't list" — and it's less about productivity than permission. Permission to stop doing everything, and start caring for yourself instead. Here on Beat Nurse Burnout, I call this same practice an Energy Audit — because before you can protect your energy, you have to know exactly where it's leaking.

If this episode stirs something in you — if you already know there are things on your plate that need to go — this is your sign to take the next step.

Book your free Stress Assessment: click here

When you book, add "energy" in the notes and we'll build your energy audit into the call — one step, one conversation, and you'll walk away with real clarity on what to release.

              In this episode:

              • What a to-don't list is, and how it's different from prioritizing your to-do list
              • How to decide what actually belongs on yours
              • Why permission — not more tools — is often the missing piece
              • How Elizabeth's to-don't list connects to the Energy Audit process

              • From "10% Away from a Mental Breakdown" to Healing [ Part 1 with Elizabeth Andreyevskiy]

In this episode, I sit down with Elizabeth A. — Anger Management Coach for Christian Moms and podcast host — for part one of a two-part conversation on burnout, breakdown, and what real healing actually looks like.

This January, Elizabeth told her husband something a lot of us have felt but never said out loud: "I feel like I'm 10% away from a mental breakdown." In this episode, she walks us through exactly what that moment felt like, what pushed her there, and the real steps she took afterward — therapy, coaching, and rebuilding her capacity from the ground up.

If any part of Elizabeth's story feels familiar, you don't have to wait until you're 10% away from your own breaking point.

This is a real session to assess your stress, needs and serve you. Also, we'll uncover your best next step together to stress less. 100% of the people who've booked a call have told me they left feeling better, more calm, more peace than when they started.

                In this episode:

                • Elizabeth's story of reactivity, anger, and feeling out of control as a mom
                • The recent moment she realized she was 10% from a breakdown
                • What therapy and coaching actually helped her rebuild
                • Why waiting until you're at your limit isn't a strategy
                • Part two drops next — where Elizabeth shares the practice that gave her permission to stop doing and start healing.

                • Phantom Shifts: Why Your Brain Never Clocks Out (Even On Your Days Off)

In this follow-up to our conversation with Jolene, author of Still Standing: One Burnt-Out Nurse's Story, Shan breaks down the two hidden autopilot patterns driving nurse burnout that most self-care advice completely misses: an identity so fused to the caregiver role it can't be set down, and a nervous system so stuck in "shift mode" it never actually clocks out, even during time off.

If you've ever cried in your car after a shift, dreaded the next one before you'd even left the last, or found yourself mentally charting on your day off, this episode explains why, and why breathing exercises and journaling haven't touched it.

                  In this episode:

                  • Why chronic stress shows up long before burnout, and the early warning signs most nurses miss (00:45)
                  • What "phantom shifts" are, and why your brain won't clock out even when your body has (00:45)
                  • Why taking on other people's emotions is an autopilot response tied to caregiver identity, not a personality trait (03:30)
                  • The real reason self-care tools like journaling and breathing exercises stop working on a stuck nervous system (06:30)
                  • A real STEADY client's experience shifting from reactive to responding with compassion (09:30)
                  • Why "repair first, regulate second" is the missing order in most burnout advice (10:30)

                    • This Nurse Wrote the Book on Burnout -- While Still In It

What does burnout actually look like from the inside... when you're still showing up, still performing, still getting it done?

Today's guest, Jolene Smith, knows exactly what that feels like. Jolene is an LPN with nearly two decades of experience across long-term care, corrections, and occupational health. She is still working bedside. And she wrote STILL STANDING: One Burnt-out Nurse's Story — not from the other side of burnout... but from inside it.

Post-it notes covering her bedroom walls. Notebooks full of thoughts that had nowhere else to go. A body sending signals she couldn't ignore anymore.

                      In this episode, Jolene shares:

                      • What burnout actually felt like from the inside — and why she thought something was wrong with her
                      • The moment her body finally said "I don't want to do this anymore" — and what she did next
                      • Why switching facilities didn't fix it... because it wasn't the job
                      • What "phantom shifts" are doing to your nervous system on your days off
                      • Why she wrote the book from inside burnout — and what she wants the nurse who is still standing to hear
                      • If you have ever sat in your car before a shift and already felt like crying... if you have ever started caring less — not about your patients, but about everything — and wondered what that meant about you...

This episode is going to feel like someone finally said it out loud.

                      • Breath Prayer for Nurses Who Feel Like a Failure: You Are Not What You DO [ Breathe & Be Still series ]

You clocked in exhausted. You made a mistake, or felt like you did. And somewhere in there, you started measuring your worth by your shift instead of remembering who made you.

Psalm 139:14 says it plain: "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Not because of what you got done today. Because you exist. That's it. That's the whole qualification.

In this episode we sit with that truth and let it undo the performance-based lie burnout loves to whisper.

                        Breath Prayer:

Inhale: I am fearfully and wonderfully made
                        (hold 4 counts)
                        Exhale: I praise you, Lord.

Come back to this one on the drive home. In the supply closet. Before you walk back in the room. Let it remind your nervous system what's actually true.

                        Want to go deeper?

If this hit something in you... if you're realizing your worth has quietly gotten tangled up with your job... let's talk about it. Book a stress assessment and we'll dig into your unique Kingdom Identity together.

                      • Aligned Leadership for Nurses and Working Moms: How to Lead Yourself Before You Lead Anyone Else [ with Susan Ro]

In this episode of Beat Nurse Burnout, Shan sits down with Susan Ro — creator of the Aligned Leadership Method, host of the Leadership for Busy Working Moms podcast, and a woman who knows firsthand what it looks like to rebuild your life around what actually matters.

Susan went from the high-energy world of New York City fashion to teaching, marriage, motherhood of four boys, and eventually to coaching and leading other women — and the thread running through all of it is a simple but radical conviction: that lasting leadership starts with leading yourself, in alignment with Christ, before it ever extends to anyone else.

This episode is for the nurse who is excellent at her job and exhausted in her life. It is for the woman of faith who has confused people pleasing with godliness. It is for the high achiever who has never once thought of herself as a leader — because she has spent her entire career following someone else's agenda.

In this conversation, Shan and Susan talk about:

                        • The through line God was weaving through Susan's career path that she could not see until she looked back
                        • What busy working moms and nurses have in common no matter how different their circumstances look on the outside
                        • Why leading yourself first is not selfish — and how to reframe it as the most faithful thing you can do
                        • How aligning your life to Christ functions as a leadership strategy — not just a spiritual practice — and what that changes about daily decisions, schedules, and relationships
                        • What to say to the woman who has never thought of herself as a leader because she has always been the one taking orders
                        • How people pleasing hides inside faithfulness and how to finally recognize it for what it is
                        • What stewarding your own life — your health, your time, your calling — looks like as an act of obedience rather than selfishness
                        • How to actually debrief after a hard shift or a hard day instead of just absorbing it and carrying it home
                        • How to articulate your feelings clearly — because clarity about what you are experiencing is the first step to leading yourself out of it
                        • What stepping into obedience to who God called you to be actually requires — and what it costs to keep saying no to it
                        • If you have ever felt like leadership was something you did for other people and never for yourself — this episode is going to reframe everything.
