  • Gathering 186: “Accuse me?!” // “Jesus and the Sinners"
Join us this week as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. begins his new sermon series, "Accuse me?!” Jesus bore the brunt of abundant and caustic accusations: He socializes with the immoral...Check! He strays from tradition healing on the Sabbath...Check! He upsets the status quo ransacking Holy places...Check! And to what end? This week Pastor Tony explores the first of many assumptions surrounding Jesus’ biggest accusations: his relationship with sinners. Discover how the widely accepted steps to salvation or entrance to the kingdom of heaven may have not accurately reflected Jesus’ posture toward sinners. What if there was a different way for us to interpret his actions? Did he call sinners to repentance or was this notion brought later to the gospels? And if not, as followers of Jesus, how different would we live our lives today if we were to follow a new model built instead on total acceptance and inclusion?

  • Gathering 185: “Evolving…” // “God of Fluidity” // Rev. Tony Minear, Ph.D.
Will your God survive the 21st century? As humanity's understanding of evolutionary theory and science continues to grow and evolve, what impact will it have on your concept of the divine? Will it remain the same or will it also shift and evolve to accommodate for new ideas and understandings? Join us this week as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. concludes his sermon series, "Evolving..." and examines how to keep Christianity relevant for the newly secularized and scientific west. Discover a new option for explaining and thinking about God—one that is at once fluid and adaptable, yet trustworthy and omnipresent. Perhaps, it’s time to shift our changeless perceptions of the divine and discover the honesty and freedom in doing so?

  • Gathering 184: “Evolving…” // “Darwin, Caterpillars, Wasps and Evil”
How is it that a benevolent God allowed 98% of all species throughout all history to become extinct? When you look at the natural world, you can find all kinds of pain and suffering. From caterpillars becoming fodder for wasp larvae, to antelope hunted as prey for leopards, how do you explain the prevalence of suffering and evil in the natural world if God is good? Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy posits that only human beings are moral agents, and therefore only human beings can perform evil actions. So how does that reconcile with natural law and what do we do about evil? How can evolutionary theory pivot the fall of humanity as revealed in the creation story of Genesis to accommodate for the natural evils or bad states of affairs of humankind or the natural world? Join us this week as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. continues his sermon series, "Evolving..." and examines theodicy and the natural law from a 21st century perspective. Is it possible that it’s time for us to reconsider our concept of God once again?

  • Gathering 183: “Evolving…” // “The Angst of Evolutionary Theory"
Speculations as to the origins and ancestry of humanity have divided and generated angst in cultures for centuries, and perhaps none greater than Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution in 1859. Though revolutionary, Darwin’s theory of natural selection was incompatible with religious beliefs and further complicated the tenuous relationship between science and religion. In fact, Charles Darwin sat on his theory of evolution for 20 years before publishing it, but why? Join us this week as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. continues his sermon series, "Evolving..." and examines the angst and controversary behind one of humanity’s biggest arguments. Can evolutionary theory coexist with religion? And, if so, how do we reconcile the one with the other today and into the future?

  • Gathering 182: “Evolving…Intelligent Design After Darwin” //
Why do you believe in God? For decades, humanity has struggled with the question. Life's complexities often leave us seeking answers and feeling alone. Until Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and natural selection, science could provide no better alternative to explain the Design in nature other than by the hands of an intelligent designer. But is it intelligent design or random happenstance? Does every design in the natural world have to have intelligence behind it or is it simply a mystery? Join us this week as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. continues his sermon series, "Evolving..." and explores the tension many feel between the notion of intelligent design and Darwin’s theory of evolution. Is God involved in the evolution or natural selection of humanity? What does Jesus have to do with it? These and many more questions are raised this week for you to consider as you discover how to live in the tension.

  • Gathering 181: “Clash of the Titans: Biblical Authority vs. Science/Evolution”
What impact does the theory of evolution have on our Christian beliefs? Can the science of evolution truly coexist with the Biblical narrative and who has the authority? Too often we separate the two and are asked to choose one over the other. As Christians, there is plenty of rationale to hang our hats upon the longevity and assured foundation of the Bible. However, just as the world around us continues to change, could we not also see the Bible as one of adaptation? Join us this week as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. continues his sermon series, "Evolving..." and explores evolution’s impact on Christian beliefs and in particular, the Bible. Learn the many ways humanity has wrestled with this issue of authority. Discover an alternative or new way to think about the Bible and humanity, one in which we adapt our beliefs and rebuild our worldview to, perhaps, encompass both.

  • Gathering 180: “Evolving…To Adapt is to Survive" // Rev. Tony Minear, Ph.D.
Almost 162 years after the publication of Charles Darwin’s “The Origin of Species,” humanity and especially Christianity continues to wrestle with its provocative and often divisive theory of evolution. Why the longevity of its divisiveness? For many Christians, be they fundamentalist or mainline, the prevailing belief is that science should never inform orthodoxy. From our behaviors and legislation to the sustainability of the church itself, evolution has the power to shape spiritual communities like no other. Join us this week as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. begins his new sermon series, "Evolving..." and explores evolution's impact not only on humanity but on the church itself. On its current trajectory, will the Christian church with its centuries-old tenants and provisions survive? Or do we adapt and change to reach a new generation?

  • Gathering 179: "Naming Our Story - And, G-d saw that it was good" // e hutchison
A few days ago, we celebrated Earth Day. The one day a year we have named to honor Mother Earth and reflect upon the creation story. Like the Earth, we all have an origin story. What creation story do you believe and how does the Earth play into that story? This week ellie hutchison, our Member in Discernment, explores humanity's connectedness with Mother Earth through the creation story. Storytelling itself is a compelling device for evoking our raw emotions. Discover how the creation story summons our nurturing hearts to explore dominion over all the earth with love, and the freedom and unification that comes from doing so. Learn the importance of naming each moment. For it is in our naming conventions that we can connect with one another and with the Earth and see that it is in fact good.

  • Gathering 177: "Co-Creating Freedom and Wholeness” // ellie hutchison
What are the roles of faith, hope and love for you in 2021? Perhaps it’s hard to discern given the disruption of the pandemic to all our lives this past year. For most of us, the pandemic broke through our individual spheres of comfort and safety causing havoc and a sense of brokenness in its wake. This week, our Member in Discernment, ellie Hutchison explores a similar story of disruption and brokenness found in Mark 14:3-9, Jesus' anointing at Bethany. Listen and discover how the broken alabaster jar represents the vessel in which we carry our burdens and oppression and what comes after the breaking...a new sense of wholeness and freedom. Learn of the gift that brokenness can bring and embrace the healing of just how reliable you are. Then co-create a new freedom dream vessel with us! Are you ready?

  • Gathering 176: Easter Service of Worship // "Resurrection Moments Every Day"
Uncertainty. If this past year of living with COVID-19 has been about nothing else, it’s been about uncertainty. An uncertainty about the future that quickly led to fear. The kind of paralyzing fear that drove us into our pandemic-safe houses and behind N95 masks. Scripture tells us the disciples too knew this same paralyzing fear on that very first Easter morning following Jesus’ death and resurrection. Join us as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. explores the idea of resurrection and what it means for us today. Listen and discover how you too experience small moments of resurrection every day. How will you respond?
