  • Gathering 163: “Mary’s Midwife” // Christmas Eve Service of Worship
Merry Christmas to you from Beatitudes Church! Like most Christians, you’ve probably seen countless Christmas pageants. This is just one of many Christmas traditions we hold dear. Who can forget the little four-year-old sheep that wanders stage right to stare off seemingly dazed by the big audience? Each year we gather together in worship to watch the story unfold. The shepherds with their sheep, the cow, the donkey, the three wisemen, the mother and father, the baby Jesus, and the midwife. Say what?! The midwife? Join us this Christmas as Pastor Tony Minear recounts an old familiar favorite with a new twist. Chances are you’ve never heard the story recounted in this way, but you’ll never forget the valuable lesson this unaccounted-for-player has for a world in need.

  • Gathering 162: “Advent Hope – Sabbath Rest”
Rest. For you. For the earth. Shabbat reminds us of our rightful place to the rest of God's creation. Shabbat chastises us for forgetting that the land does not belong to us. We belong to each other. Therein lies our HOPE. Join us today as Pastor Tony reflects on restoring HOPE by accepting our own and nature’s limitations. Reflect on the wisdom of the ancients and discover how cutting back and downsizing your mental and physical activities can improve the quality of your life which in turn will restore a right relationship with the Earth. In such a time as this, rediscover your sense of HOPE to gift to others (and the Earth) now and into the new year.

  • Gathering 161: “Advent Hope – Have No Enemies”
Is it possible to have no enemies? Jesus taught us to “love your enemies,” but maybe it’s time to recast that appeal with a new and more relevant translation for today? What if instead we were to “have no enemies?” As evolutionary biology concludes, it is instinctual for Homo sapiens to have enemies; it’s how we survived as a species. Old Testament wisdom repeatedly refers to the preservation of God’s remnant throughout history and distinguishes a hierarchy of insiders from outsiders. Until the time of Jesus, this distinction was never countered. However, despite Jesus’ petition, societal and political division and animosity continue today. Join us today as Pastor Tony reflects on remaining hopeful in a society full of enmity. Discover three steps you can take to rekindle a diminishing sense of hope and rest in a space of love and acceptance of your adversaries. In such a time as this, rediscover your sense of HOPE to gift to others now and into the new year.

  • Gathering 160: “Advent Hope – Odd One Out”
Ever felt left out or found yourself relegated to the “third wheel?” Quite often the “odd one out” finds themself being leveraged to help the other two succeed. Throughout the ages within Christianity, you can identify three entities that constantly juggle this precarious balance of relationship: God, humanity, and the Earth. This is especially true when it comes to the restoration of Hope as presented each year during the season of Advent. Quite often the Earth is left out as Christians everywhere celebrate the redemption of humanity with God and the hope of the second coming of Christ through songs and worship. But what would happen if we were to shift our views of this trilogy of God, humanity and the Earth and embrace a new perspective? Join Pastor Tony Minear as he examines a new sense of Hope to be found simply by shifting our understanding of how we see ourselves, God, and all of creation. Discover the profound impact that evolutionary biology has made on how we respond the “odd one out” …Earth. Learn how you can restore a significant sense of hope not only for yourself, but for the children and youth of today, and future generations to come to make love real for all creation.

  • Gathering 156: “JOSEPH: King David's Doppelganger; Ruler of the Northern Kingdom
Our nation is divided. Divided by racism, by ideology and by party lines. Our recent election cycle has proven such. Although, you may think we’ve got the market cornered on division and polarization, the story of Joseph as told in Genesis tells an equally compelling saga of humanity in need of reconciliation and forgiveness. Join us as we begin our new worship series, "JOSEPH: King David's Doppelganger; Ruler of the Northern Kingdom". This week, Rev. Tony Minear, Ph.D. examines the life and experiences of Joseph as written in Old Testament accounts. Learn three ways you can practice reconciliation and forgiveness of others this week to restore peace and, in the words of Thomas Jefferson at his first inaugural address in 1801, “unite with one heart and one mind.”

  • Gathering 154: “Moral Foundations – Sanctity”
We all want to “fit in” and feel accepted. Think back to your early school yard experiences. No one wanted to be the last kid picked for foursquare or dodgeball. Although we may have blamed others for making us feel as though we didn’t measure up, it is innately human to feel inconsequential and unimportant; perhaps, even unclean. The human condition is to repeatedly explore and determine what corrupts or defiles a person from living in community. To be pure and chaste, is to be clean and worthy to belong. Join us this week for our continued worship series, Moral Foundations, as our guest speaker, Rev. Scott Jones, examines the fifth of six moral foundations, Sanctity. Reflect on how often you categorize or judge others about everything from politics to mask-wearing. Explore how Jesus spoke to our human propensity to find sanctity from the outside in. Discover the paradox of finding true liberation and sanctity only when you reexamine the condition of your heart and instead look inside out.

What does your moral foundations profile look like? Elections offer us the perfect opportunity to reflect upon our morals and intuitive ethics that shape our narratives and virtues. While the culture wars and populist movements are beginning to gain momentum, where do you stand? On November 3rd, consider what “sanctity” means for you.
