  • Gathering 153: “Moral Foundations – Authority/Subversion”
What does your moral foundations profile look like? Elections offer us the perfect opportunity to reflect upon our morals and intuitive ethics that shape our narratives and virtues. While the culture wars and populist movements are beginning to gain momentum, where do you stand? Join us this week for our continued worship series, Moral Foundations, as ellie Hutchison, our Member In Discernment, examines the fourth of six moral foundations, Authority/Subversion.

What does “authority” mean for you? In the political sphere, it describes any of the moral principles legitimizing differences between individuals' rights and duties by virtue of their relationship with the state. In a familial sphere, it describes our lived experience with individuals who influence how we self-identify such as our parents and teachers. But how do we collectively decide the virtues of leadership and followership? And how do we not undermine legitimate authority or respect for our traditions as a society? The answer may be to simply change or reimagine our relationship with power. Jesus understood this. As an agent of subversion, Jesus modeled what it meant to be a light for the oppressed by listening to the needs of others and to be an authority for good.

  • Gathering 152: “Moral Foundations – Loyalty”
What does your moral foundations profile look like? Elections offer us the perfect opportunity to reflect upon our morals and intuitive ethics that shape our narratives and virtues. While the culture wars and populist movements are beginning to gain momentum, where do you stand? Join us this week for our continued worship series, Moral Foundations, as Pastor Tony examines the third of six moral foundations, Loyalty.
If you’re like most people, you are a member of at least one if not several groups. From geographical, ideological, and spiritual groups to your political affiliation, your identity is largely defined by being a part of a group. Social and evolutionary science tells us that group cohesion and longevity is based largely on a group’s ability to bond through in-group biases. While loyalty to the group and its biases can create solidarity, it can quickly turn toxic if another group (adversarial) is introduced. Jesus understood this. But instead of letting in-group biases create rivalry, he expanded his group to include adversaries, minorities, and the marginalized. How about you? When you reflect upon your loyalties, can you see beyond your group to be as inclusive? When November 3rd arrives, will you align your choices with those loyalties? Empower your decision this election by aligning your choice with your own moral foundations.

  • Gathering 151: “Moral Foundations – Fairness”
What does your moral foundations profile look like? Elections offer us the perfect opportunity to reflect upon our morals and intuitive ethics that shape our narratives and virtues. While the culture wars and populist movements are beginning to gain momentum, where do you stand? Join us this week for our worship series, Moral Foundations, as Pastor Tony examines the second of six moral foundations, Fairness.

Does it ever pay to be selfish or are we naturally hardwired to be fair and altruistic? While the idea of fairness is largely subjective, it typically falls into one of three categories: deservedness, equality or equity. And while tensions and conflicts arise when a culture group choses one category of fairness over another, we can level the playing field simply by agreeing to accept what life hands us. When November 3rd arrives, ask yourself which candidates demonstrate fairness? Which candidates inspire that in you? Empower your decision this election by aligning your choice with your own moral foundations.

  • Gathering 150: “Moral Foundations – Care & Compassion”
What does your moral foundations profile look like? Elections offer us the perfect opportunity to reflect upon our morals and intuitive ethics that shape our narratives and virtues. While the culture wars and populist movements are beginning to gain momentum, where do you stand? Join us this week for our new worship series, Moral Foundations, as Pastor Tony examines the first of six moral foundations, Care & Compassion. Culture tells us we are greedy and selfish by nature, but science tells us otherwise. Just as Jesus modeled care and compassion, we too are inherently kind and caring. When November 3rd arrives, ask yourself which candidates are caring and compassionate? Which candidates inspire that in you? Empower your decision this election by aligning your choice with your own moral foundations.

  • Gathering 149: “Black Lives Matter”
Black Lives Matter. This often-divisive civil rights movement has reshaped the ways in which we practice justice for our black and brown brothers and sisters. Christianity, too, has had its fair share of controversial shakeups dedicated to overturning the structures of societal inequalities. Take Liberation Theology. Although founded on the tenants of applying Christian faith to social action, it has been called Marxist and patriarchal. Join us this week as ellie hutchison, our Member in Discernment, examines the parallels of the Black Lives Movement with feminist liberation theology. Listen and learn of the origins of each and discover how at the core both exist to bring awareness to the oppressed and the marginalized. And how, like Jesus, both incorporate full humanity in their practice of justice. Discover what it could mean for our world and society if we were to reframe the way we practice justice, and simply make love real.

  • Gathering 147: “Another Brick in the Wall”
We don’t need no education. We don’t need no thought control. Conformity. Pink Floyd’s 1979 rock opera and film “The Wall” addresses the consequences of conformity through art and song. Founding member, Roger Waters, describes the narrative as showing us “the self-isolating barrier we build over the course of our lives, and the "bricks in the wall" are the people and events that turn us inward and away from others.” We can connect with the message of The Wall because of its emotive power to remind us of what it feels to be powerless and at the mercy of others, be it governmental, societal or familial. Jesus, too, understood what it was to be pressured to conform and be a brick in the Judaean wall. Join us this week as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. examines the issue of conformity and the implications of operating from a posture of fear to just be yourself. Listen and discover how Jesus’ example of courage can empower you to tear down the bricks in the wall that separate and keep you from making love real for others.

  • Gathering 141: “Evolving humans. Evolving God?”
Brace yourself. What you’re about to hear may be unsettling. It may make you uneasy, hesitant and a tad uncomfortable. Most likely you’ll want to fall back on old answers, but hang for a moment and consider that the God in our world is still evolving. Or, perhaps, our understanding of God. Join us this week as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. examines the evolution of humanity’s relationship with nature and with God. Explore how our 21st century view of God is more like those of the ancients than one might imagine. Listen and discover the beauty of learning to live in the mystery — the mystery of humanity, the mystery of our current pandemic, the mystery of nature, and the mystery of God him/her/it self.

  • Gathering 140: “The Science of Relationships”
This month we’ve been focusing on humanity’s relationship with the Earth and Environment. We’ve taken a hard look at the differences between a biblical point of view and that of a 21st century point of view shaped by science and postmodern reasoning. But what exactly is our relationship with nature itself? Is it harmonious or adversarial? Natural systems may have been transformed by humans but that does not mean we can control them. Join us this week as ellie hutchison, our Member in Discernment, examines the science of relationships and why it matters to our relationship with nature. Listen and discover how this interdependent relationship often mirrors how we actually relate to one another. Understand the impact that making God’s love real has not only for one another, but for nature itself.

  • Gathering 139: “The Green Dragon”
If you want to draw a line in the sand, ask a Christian their view on climate change and global warming. Since the early 2000’s, this politically and economically divisive topic has managed to polarize Christians like few other topics. Do you believe we must act now to change our carbon footprint, or is it out of our control and a matter of God’s design? This week, Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. continues his worship series #earthmatters and examines the theology behind the arguments. Whether you agree with the science of the issue or view climate change and global warming as a threat to the Christian church, you can make a difference simply by being informed. In transformative times such as this, realize not only the power you have to make God’s love real, but to change the trajectory of climate change and global warming. Listen and discover four things to consider before choosing a side.

  • Gathering 138: “The Stage of Life”
William Shakespeare once wrote, “All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players.” But what of the animals and creatures of the Earth? Join us as we begin a new worship series examining humanity’s relationship with the Earth and our environment. Throughout the Old Testament and wisdom literature, we find references to nature itself as an actor on the world’s stage and a rich tradition of personification of the elements of nature itself. Listen this week as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. compares the ancients’ point of view about nature with a 21st century lens matured by reasoning and scientific fact. Explore the possibilities for our world when we align our contemporary lens with that of ancient wisdom and make God’s love real for all the world’s players, including nature.
