Beatnik Turtle's Song of the Day

Jason's STILL trying to catch his breath after recording THIS traditional Irish folk song for our album Sham Rock.

Have you ever heard a traditional Irish folk song re-done as a ska song with a Spanish horn riff? Well, now you have! This week's song tells the story of an unfortunate guy who meets his loved one in her kitchen but when they are discovered by the Captain of the house, she accuses him of burglary! This is another track recorded as part of our RPM Challenge 2008 album, Sham Rock.

John Lisiecki wrote this great tune for and WITH his 2 year old son.

You've seen their comments in forums and websites everywhere. You know the ones: meaningless, arrogant, rude, and uninformed. Hiding behind their screen name, these commenters are hereby dubbed proud members of the "Douchebag Brigade." Be sure to check out the song's video.

There was a such a great discussion of this song's topic in this episode of Evo Terra's podcast Evo @ 11 (see "YouTube is full of sh*t stains") that we thought we'd echo the sentiment.

Ironically, "Face Down In The Snow" was written on an extremely snowy weekend. Wait, that would be unironically, wouldn't it? Oh well, the point is it was quite a blizzard, with traffic accidents, and power outages all over the area.

We had luckily made it up to the cabin in Wisconsin for a big recording weekend before it hit. But shortly after arriving and settling in, we suddenly realized that Steve Owens, our keyboard player and John Owens' brother, was nowhere to be found. He was there...then he wasn't. Weird.

John's reaction was: "Jeez, I hope he's not face down in the snow somewhere." We all looked at each other, and said, "That's a song!"

Rather than head out in the blizzard to find him, we headed back downstairs to write the song. It's a song that couldn't have been written with Steve. Luckily, we didn't have to play it at any memorial for him or anything: Steve made it safely back home through the blizzard in one piece.

Sometimes it's tough to shut off the brain, stop thinking, and just go to sleep.

He once was on our side, but he's a cop now.

Tom wrote a number of songs about a year ago that inevitably had an autumn flavor to them. This is the first one, with more to come before the year is done.

Santa doesn't like you, but hey, he doesn't like Beatnik Turtle either, so it's all good. This is a live version of the title track from our "Un-Holiday" album available at the iTunes.
