During the pandemic, Etienne Labuschagne, a lawyer by trade, wrote and shared children’s stories with parents of young children for free. They were initially inspired by the grandchildren he hoped to read to one day. Now the lawyer-turned-High Court judge in South Africa has had his writings published in a book, Bedtime Stories For Clever Kids (Austin Macauley Publishers), sharing stimulating stories that teach, enlighten, and entertain children – and parents. “When you read the stories, you will see that they are not typical,” says the author. “Complex themes are introduced in a safe environment in order to broaden the minds of children. I remember reading children’s books to my kids that were mind - numbingly boring. I understand the need for simplicity, but kids are more perceptive than we imagine. They make associations and pick up nuances that will surprise us. And they are curious. Show them something new and they will want to know more. Kids and parents will talk at bedtime about themes or events that emerge from the stories. Bedtime presents an occasion when kids unwind and become receptive to new learning. Bedtime Stories for Clever Kids will help to stimulate the conversation.”
