Non-musical history for today: 1965 – Frank Herbert’s novel, Dune, was published for the first time. It was named the world’s best-selling science fiction novel in 2003. I never read it (because I really hate reading), but have seen both big-screen versions and enjoyed them both very much. The 1984 version for the schlock value and the 2021/2024 versions for the stunning visuals.

Non-musical history for today: 1836 – Inauguration of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It stands in the center of Place Charles de Gaulle, where a wagon-spoke-like road system happens. TWELVE roads stem from the center. Let me tell you, you better know which one you need because Parisians don’t like you being in their way. It’s the only time I’ve seen Parisians angry (contrary to American conjecture). Napoleon commissioned the monument. It honors those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Below the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from WWI.

Non-musical history for today: 1794 – Maximilien Robespierre and Louis Antoine de Saint-Just were executed by guillotine in Paris. Robespierre had set the country alight (figuratively) with the Reign of Terror and during the convention in July 1794 said there were traitors, calumniators, and other miscreants in the convention’s midst, but declined to name them. Fearing another Reign of Terror, conspirator Jean-Lambert Tallien (whom Robespierre correctly suspected) turned the convention on Robespierre and his Robespierrians. This included Saint-Just, who was the youngest person elected to serve under Ol’ Max. The execution of over 105 people was carried out in the Place de la Révolution, which is now called Place de la Concorde. I’ve stood in that courtyard several times.

Bugs was modeled after Clark Gable’s character Peter Warne from the film It Happened One Night. Additionally, the character Oscar Shapeley from that film referred to Warne as “Doc,” and Warne mentioned a fictitious person named “Bugs Dooley” to run Shapeley away.

Non-musical history for today: 1861 – The United States Congress passes the Crittenden–Johnson Resolution, stating that the war was being fought to preserve the Union and not to end slavery, in the wake of the defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run. Now, Congress can say that all they want, and hey, it may be true. However, the story goes from the Union, the Confederacy was right there in it, to keep their slaves. It said so in more than three of the states’ succession documents. A bunch of mouth breathers, they were.

Non-musical history for today: 1567 – Mary, Queen of Scots, was forced to abdicate and be replaced by her one-year-old son James VI. To be fair, the road had been long for Mary anyway. I don’t think she wanted to be queen. But, for a one-year-old, she had to stay around. But, I’m sure men ran the show, because… how could they not. They didn’t hold women in high regard.
