Non-musical history for today: 1976 – The Korean axe murder incident in Panmunjom results in the deaths of two US Army officers. Panmunjom is the town located on the North-South Korean border, where the Korean War ended with the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement. It was a temporary agreement, but it did its job.

Non-musical history for today: 1945 – The novella Animal Farm by George Orwell was first published. It follows the anthropomorphic farm animals of the fictional Manor Farm as they rebel against their human farmer, aiming to create a society where all animals can be equal, free, and happy, free from human intervention. However, by the end of the novella, the rebellion is betrayed, and under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon, the farm ends up in a far worse state than it was before. It was written to reflect events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union, a period during which Russia was governed under the Marxist–Leninist ideology of Joseph Stalin. However, I think it could still be an allegory for something more recent. And by recent, I mean, current.

Non-musical history for today: 1792 – King Louis XVI of France was formally arrested by the National Tribunal and declared an enemy of the people. Later that year, the National Assembly declared France to be a republic and abolished the monarchy. Louis was stripped of all of his titles and honors, and from this date was known as Citoyen Louis Capet. He and his wife, Marie Antoinette, were both executed by guillotine in 1793; he in January, she in October.

Non-musical history for today: 1865 – Joseph Lister, British surgeon and scientist, performed the first antiseptic surgery. In 1879, Joseph Lawrence, the American inventor of Listerine antiseptic, developed it as a surgical antiseptic (nowadays it is best known as a mouthwash), and named it after Lister. I keep a bottle in my lavatory, the original yellow, by the way.
