I guess in a way it is musical because I was standing on a stage in a place called the Red Pepper Tavern when it was announced. Non-musical history for today: 1898 – Caleb Bradham’s beverage “Brad’s Drink” was renamed “Pepsi-Cola.” In the soft drink world, I’d say that Pepsi isn’t really in my favorites list. I don’t mind the cherry-flavored Zero Sugar version. And, where I’m from they are the distributors of Dr. Pepper, which is my favorite, along with the cherry and cream soda versions. Zero Sugar is my go-to on those.

Robert Fulton, along with his pal Robert Livingston, created the first steamboat service. Fitch, it seems, is the rightful inventor of the actual conveyance. Hence, the patent.

Non-musical history for today: 1835 – The first Great Moon Hoax article was published in The New York Sun, announcing the discovery of life and civilization on the Moon. The author of the narrative was apparently Dr. Andrew Grant, the travelling companion and scribe of Sir John Herschel. It described animals on the Moon, including bison, single-horned goats, mini zebras, unicorns, bipedal tail-less beavers, and bat-like winged humanoids (“Vespertilio-homo”) who built temples. A new kind of telescope supposedly saw this. As we now know, it was truly a hoax. Or do we know?

Non-musical history for today: 1995 – Microsoft released (unleashed?) Windows 95 to the public in North America. Up to this point, Windows 3.1 was the go-to operating system for Applications (or “programs” as they were called). And I must admit some nostalgia for that old thing. And, Windows 95 was a major breakthrough at the time. Followed by 98 in 1998, 2000 in 1999, ME in 2000, XP in 2001, Vista in 2007, Windows 7 in 2009, 8 in 2012, Windows 10 in 2015, Windows 11 in 2021. Support for all previous OS up to Windows 10 has expired, and that will be phased out in October 2025. Here’s your reminder to update your stuff!! I mean, if you’re a PC/Windows kind of person.

Non-musical history for today: 2004 – Versions of The Scream and Madonna, two paintings by Edvard Munch, were stolen at gunpoint from a museum in Oslo, Norway. In August 2006, Norwegian police announced that a police operation had recovered both The Scream and Madonna, but did not reveal detailed circumstances of the recovery. The Scream is one of my favorite pieces of art.
