This week I am joined by David Shepherd. David has been the CEO of The Scandinavian in Copenhagen, Denmark since 2016. a 36-hole facility which has recently been voted as having the number 1 and 2 courses in Denmark. Prior to this David spent over 8 years in the Algarve at Monte Rei Golf and Country Club as Director of Golf which followed on from a successful time at The Belfry Golf Resort as Golf Operations Manager. It's safe to say that David as worked at some of the best clubs in Europe and has a reputation himself to match.
I am excited to have David join me as we discuss how he approaches developing his employees. David exemplifies a modern approach to this as he sees the employee as a whole; both the person at home and the member of the team at work. From enabling one of his greenkeeping team to take 6 weeks off to compete in a race across the Atlantic Ocean to his own trips to visit other top courses around the world David takes a proactive approach to development.
I hope you enjoy this conversation.

Today I am speaking with Phoebe Torrance. Phoebe is the Women's Golf and Development Manager at The Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia.
This was a super interesting conversation which gave me some ideas of tactics to implement to make golf clubs more inclusive and welcoming to get more women into golf. It can be a tricky proposition running coaching programmes to bring new members into private members clubs but Phoebe has done a fantastic job and there are lots of ideas that can help clubs attract a more diverse group of members to join their clubs.

Today I am speaking with Kari Haug, http://karihaug.com/. Kari is the owner and lead golf course architect at Kari Howg Planning & Design, Inc., a golf course architecture company that focuses on sustainable and eco-sensitive golf course design. Kari is a member of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects (EIGCA), and one of the very few female golf course architects in the world. She is committed to eco-sensitive and sustainable golf course design, and the improvement of course playability for women and seniors. A competitive amateur and former collegiate golfer, Kari is able to envision sound golf strategy from tee to green. Using CAD technology and other design rendering techniques, Kari is able to make drafted designs come to life for a memorable golf experience.
I'm excited to have Kari join me for a discussion around her sustainability model and Playable Pathways, to see how we can make golf courses more enjoyable for female golfers, and slower swing speed golfers in general, to play which is a crucial part of engaging them and keeping them as active golfers.

Welcome to Season 2 of the Modern Club Management Podcast. This season's theme is all around diversity in clubs. We'll be speaking with a diverse group of people from within the industry about their experiences, what we as an industry can do better to encourage diversity, how we can design golf courses to be more inclusive, why diversity of thought is so powerful, and much more. I hope you enjoy these conversations as much as I did. Listen to these with an open mind and be willing to have your current approach and thinking challenged.
We start off season 2 with Jules Murray. Jules started her career in sales and business development before moving into training and consultancy. In 2006 Jules founded Spider on the Wall Ltd which offers managerial training, soft skills, and mystery shopping services. A regular on the CMAE MDP as a presenter, Jules is well known and liked within the club community and brings a contagious energy to all of her sessions. Her passion lies in designing and delivering fun, interactive and experiential training courses; which having had the good fortune in being in some of her sessions she definitely delivers this in spades.

In this episode Monique Landman shares her insights around leading with empathy and how 'turning up' is enough. We don't need to "fix" things as leaders; be there and be authentic. That is enough to show people that you care and allows them to not feel alone.
