Dr. Madara began his career at Harvard, where he spent 22 years, later becoming the Chair of Pathology at Emory University, then the Dean of the Medical School and CEO of Hospitals at the University of Chicago, before joining the leadership at the AMA. Dr. Madara discusses his life, his views on leadership, and his legacy.

Dr. Chris Williams: Episode 1 of our 5 Part feature on Vanderbilt University. Dr. Williams is a Professor of Medicine and Cancer biology in the division of gastroenterology, an associate dean of physician scientist education and training, an associate director of the physician scientist training program, and the current director of the MD-PhD program. He received his MD-PhD from Vanderbilt and stayed on for residency in internal medicine and fellowship in GI. March 02, 2020 Machelle Pardue, PhD - The Path to the VA
Dr. Machelle Pardue is a Research Career Scientist at the Atlanta VA Medical Center and a Professor in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from the University of Wyoming, her PhD in Vision Science and Biology from the University of Waterloo, and her post-doctoral training at Loyola School of Medicine and Hines VA Hospital. She then came to the Atlanta VA Medical Center and joined faculty at Emory and later Georgia Tech. In this episode, Dr. Pardue shares with us her experience in training and at the VA, and how she runs her lab to help her students reach their full potential.

February 17, 2020 Karl Saxe, PhD - From Fruit Flies to the American Cancer Society
Dr. Karl Saxe is the Director of the Cancer Cell Biology and Metastasis program at the American Cancer Society. He got his PhD in genetics from the University of Arizona, then received postdoctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California at San Diego, before joining the staff at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Saxe then joined the faculty at Emory University, where he worked from 1990 until 2007, before becoming the director of the Cancer Cell Biology and Metastasis program at the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Saxe shares with us his varied experiences in different corners of the academic world, and elaborates on the aspects of his career that he finds most important and fulfilling. We also talk at length about the funding mechanisms at the ACS, and what it takes to put forward a successful proposal.
