A chance observation by a coach, of Sika on a Basket Ball, led to her now being on a quest to become the first African American Female Pro Triathlete. What drives a person to take the long route to finish a marathon?
Triathletes are focused driven high performing competitive individuals. I'm curious about the discipline required to train and compete, correctly how those principles transfer to real-life scenarios.
Some people are driven by internal motivation, while others require hand-holding and external motivation to get them moving. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Sika isn't externally motivated. She set some pretty audacious goals; it was en route to accomplishing her dream of obtaining her Pro Card that she suffered a horrific accident.
What do you when life punches you in the face? Do you hang up your helmet or go back to the drawing board? What sustains you during the trial? I had questions, Sika served up the answers.
If you haven't already done so leave us review on Apple Podcast, oh yeah I haven't mentioned my Ko-fi page, I almost forgot. I took the leap 4 years ago to drive for Uber/Lyft Full-time, so I'd have the flexibility to devote to building BTW Podcast. Ko-fi is platform that will allow entrepreneurs/business owners to sponsor an episode PRE, MID or POST roll, it also allows you to buy me a cup of coffee.

Thirteen years ago, I got this crazy idea to do a podcast; I shared the idea with a random stranger Alabama Joe; he was intrigued. But I had no experience, no equipment outside of a laptop, a cheap microphone.
But, I didn’t let that deter me. I wanted to start a podcast; the idea was to use it as a training tool for the associates within my hub & spoke locations. I shared the idea with my district manager, and he kind of brushed it off, but I could see the possibilities. Our corporate offices would press up record training DVD’s and then distribute them to all of their stores-it didn’t make sense to me.
A lot of things didn’t make sense to me back then, like why didn’t we offer impulse items at the checkout counter-(e.g., gum candy, & mints). We had a BJ’s near our location in Garden City, so I purchased the items in bulk and made them available for our customers. My district mgr was a little upset because I followed that long-standing retail rule about not asking permission, you ask for forgiveness.
My life at that time was on a different trajectory. I was working lengthy retail management hrs and running a successful cleaning company with three people working with me, going through a ruff divorce because of my stubbornness, ignorance, pride, which led to my infidelity.
I make no excuses for the decisions I’ve made in this life, and as long I have a love of my children, I don’t care about what the crowd thinks or says about me.
I was brutally honest with my children and asked for their forgiveness. Running has helped to repair the damage which I inflicted.
Passion alone is not enough; it can be dangerous. You might have a desire to drive a car, but without the knowledge and proper training, you may have a fatal accident.
Meeting Alabama Joe was no accident back in 2007. I was captivated by his story and creativity; I shared it with Our Time At Home, a local newspaper In Brooklyn. Bernice Green covered a story on Joe and quoted me in the piece. The picture of Miles Davis Playing with Bird when he was from Alabama Joe. I hosted an art show at my apt invited a few friends, and Joe provided the Art, Joe, and I recently connected after 13 years. I had some big plans and dreams, but the time wasn’t right.

If you’re thinking of launching a podcast, or already have one out, you may find this episode insightful. I started noticing tons of podcasting ads within my Facebook and IG feeds, everyone was offering a masterclass on everything from how to launch, to how to monetize and grow your podcast.
I thought it would be cool to hear from different voices who weren’t trying to sell you anything, real individuals who were simply following their passion, trying to find their voice and serve their community. As you listen to the episode, you'll notice a common thread woven throughout that creates a beautiful tapestry.
The possibilities with podcasting are only limited to your creativity.

This show is for those of you who tune in BTW Podcast on a regular basis, I appreciate you. As a token of my appreciation we've got a gift for you email us: behindthewheelmorningshow@ gmail.com We've created some swag let us know what you'd like see. I started BTW Podcast to highlight the accomplishments of ordinary people who were doing EXTRAordinary things within their communities. I didn't start BTW Podcast to make money selling Advertising segments, merchandise or sponsorships.
I don’t spend time looking at analytics, because I didn’t get into podcasting to make money, I got stated because I love talking to people and sharing their stories, that’s my way of making a difference in the world. I don't take The "Rununation Family" for granted
We created a coaster on it are just a few of the ordinary people who’ve been on BTW Podcast. It represents 5yrs of hard work, commitment and dedication to the running and endurance communities and beyond. This isn’t some podcasting land grab or passing fad, this is me committed to honing my craft and providing people with a platform to share their stories.
I want to be the best at what I do! But, that doesn’t mean I can’t or won’t celebrate your success, hell I’ll even offer assistance, because I’m secure in who I am. We’re quick to criticize Runner’s World for their lack representation but then don’t support our own, why is that? Does it just sound good to complain several people will be launching magazines and starting different ventures and I salute you.
I don’t spend time looking at analytics, because I didn’t get into podcasting to make money, I got stated because I love talking to people and sharing their stories, that’s my way of making a difference in the world.
When I looked at the analytics last night and I noticed I have more people tuning in on the West Coast than I do on the East Coast and more people tuning in from France than I do from New York. Now I know from my retail mgt days what gets measured gets moved.
I say all that to say stay the course, a prophet is without honor in his own land. You’ll find that those who you think will support won’t, and those who you thought had your back are the very ones talking behind your back. But, you got this!!!

Ruth Jensen and I have been following each other online since 2018, I can hear some of y'a'll saying, wait, what? Who is Ruth Jensen and what does she have to do with Dana Goldberg? And who is Dana Goldberg? Well I'm glad you asked. Ruth is the one who introduced to Dana, Dana is a comedian. I reached out to Dana on a lark, to see if she'd be guest on the show and she agreed.

When you Absofreakinglutely love your craft you spend hours honing and perfecting it, Duy, loves his work, it’s obvious from the magnificent covers he created. If you're wondering what covers I'm referring to, you must've been under a rock for the past few weeks. I first became familiar with Duy's when Pricilla Jackson posted a sample of his work. it was instantly clear and to me that he loved craft. Duy created decades worth Runner's World Magazine covers on Korea Town's Running Club Page . Why? Why would Duy create Runner's World Magazine covers for random strangers? Well, Duy understads the importance of representation.
A few years ago, Duy had an opportunity to cover Run Across Haiti and like Ben Fountain, the author of Brief Encounters with Che Guevara, he kept returning to the country-after his first trip he fell in love with running. When he returned to Korea Town he started a running club.

Is it just me, or have you also noticed an increase in the number of sponsored podcast ads your feed? It seems as though every time I open Facebook or IG, the first thing I see the Washington Post, then a couple of swipes up I hit a podcasting ad. Lately several people have reached out to me for assistance with starting a podcast, during the 5yrs of hosting BTW, I have influenced a several people to launch their own Podcast, vlog or blog.
In a previous life I served as a corporate trainer for Kinko's before transitioning to a management role. Prior to Kinko's I ran a drop out prevention program within the NYC Public School System. I felt most alive during that time period in my life, which is probably why, I don't mind sharing what I've learned with others-it gives me an opportunity to use my gift with the world.
This episode was birthed out several conversations with my sister over the years, where I'd constantly encourage her to create soap making tutorials-because I recognize she has tremendous value to offer to the world. What prompted me to press record was a phone call I received from Brenda, a fellow runner on a Saturday afternoon in June. I realized the value of the work I've been doing over the years and the relationships that have been created, it is through those relationship I was able to be of service. On the same day a fellow running shoe geek wanted to know if I'd speak to his friend Darrel, he was interested in starting a podcast. Sure, why not? I like talking about Podcasting.
While cleaning out my inbox I ran across a message from Queenie Love, in 2019 she wanted to start a Podcast, I followed up with her to see where she was in the process. This is a non scripted, impromptu conversation with Darrell and Queenie. Enjoy, the insights from this call be in a blog on my Ko-fi page.

On June 3, I received a link to a movie, "About The People", it was from Angie a friend, from a former life. In the movie were some familiar faces, I don't like to name drop, if you haven't already checked out the movie need to stop playing and go watch "About The People." While scrolling through my stories on IG Stories, I came across a post from Kovon, it was a flyer asking all crews to come out for a run and the same person who was in the movie was putting out the call-he was a runner. I couldn't make it, but I was curious to see how things turned so I stopped by his page and realized the event was a huge success.
How could someone organize a group run like this on such short notice? Was there a story here? Yeah there's definitely a story here, but could I get "That Coffey Boy" to share his story on the podcast? There's only one way to find out if he'd be willing to do the podcast and that was to invite him on the show.
"That Coffey Boy" has been a fixture in the NYC Running community for a minute. He is a Husband, Father, Filmmaker, Actor, Nike Pacer/Coach and founder of Define New York Run Club. What fascinated me was hearing Coffey's story. Hundreds of people just don't show up during the middle of a pandemic to head out for a run, unless they believe in the leader and the vision. When I reached out to Coffey, he was immediately receptive to the idea, he didn't come across aloof. When we sat down there was a sense of urgency to make a difference in the world and he's on his way to fulfilling that mission for the sake of his children. Coffey's son inspired him to write About The People. After joining a protest outside his home in Brooklyn that quickly turned, the following day he went for a run to decompress-he ran a marathon and movement was born.
