In this Lockdown 2 Bonus Edition we catch up with Whitstable Town’s manager Lloyd Blackman as he reviews the highs and lows of the season so far. This was first released as a WTFC T.V. Belmont Banter (episode 24) The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.

In this edition we catch up with Whitstable Town’s ex player, captain and manager Jason Bragg. Jason’s first real football experience was as a youngster playing Sunday League football at Senrab football Club. The South London junior side was responsible for payers who have gone on to have successful professional careers, including Sol Campbell, Jermain Defoe, Ledley King and John Terry.

Due to his parents splitting up Jason then never played much football, just the odd games with his mates until he was in his early twenties. Eventually moving to Kent from London he played for teams such as Cray, Dartford and many others before finally finishing up at Littlebourne on his football journey. It makes for another great listen…

Belmont Banter (episode 23) The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.

Ex player Steve tells us he was the scorer of Whitstable Town’s ‘Goal of the Century’ (you need to listen to the podcast to find out more) Steve Sodje was part of manager John Roseman’s side at Whitstable Town. Steve; along with a number of ‘The London Boys’ as Steve calls them, all joined Town at the same time and enjoyed some great times at Whitstable Town.

Steve who over his career played for a number of Kent Clubs has stayed in contact with many of the local lads he played with. “They were some really great times at Whitstable and we were all made so welcome by everyone at the club, we really did feel part of the family”.

In this edition we catch up with Whitstable Town’s ex manager Justin Luchford who started his football career at the age of 16 when he was captain of Kent, joking that he only stayed on an extra year at school so the he could carry on as captain. School work paid off for Justin as he now lives and works in Dubai where after ending his football in England he is now assistant manager/coach of the Dubai All Stars.

After spell at Faversham, Hythe, Ramsgate and Whitstable Town, Justin finished his time in the UK as part of the very successful management team at Tonbridge Angels after five years as first team Coach. It was a great chat with Justin who has some great stories to tell and says he was ‘gutted to leave Town’. Adding… one of his best memories in football was WTFC supporters singing his name during the 2-0 victory away to Faversham Town.

Belmont Banter (episode 21) The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.

In this edition we catch up with ex Whitstable Town manager Jim Ward, he says that in his younger days he was lucky enough to play with Peter Lorimer and other really good footballer’s Born and raised in Dundee then moved down to England and joined the RAF in 1967. 

He moved around a couple times, played for Milton Keynes City who were a really good side but they fell on hard times, saying he enjoyed his football but believes that he has been a ‘better manager than a player.’ Jim speaks about settling in Thanet, his start in management with Margate reserves and his time at Herne Bay, and the good times he enjoyed at Whitstable and Ramsgate which Jim looks upon as his home town club.

In this edition we catch up with Whitstable Town supporters Richard Tennant and Stevie Growns who take a look back at the first few games of the season. They review each Whitstable Town game so far with a ‘fans eye view’ of the results, chatting about the players from both teams and the grounds we visited. We aim to have a new one each month of the season which will be in addition to our normal weekly Podcast.

Belmont Banter (episode 18) The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.

In this edition we catch up with ex Whitstable Town manager Geoff Record when he talks about his time at the club and his early involvement with Sheppey, who are his home town team. Geoff who was playing for Dover in the Sothern League joined Whitstable in 1989, the move was prompted by a change of career and was quickly made captain by manager Peter Merritt. He adds, “we had a decent side but under achieved it the league but had some great runs in the cups”.

Geoff spent seven years with Town and mentions players Karl Rolls, Wayne Draper, Russel Mason and many more has some great stories to tell about his time at Whitstable Town and also Sheppey where he played and also managed the club. Says that he was pleased to play a part, as assistant his great mate Ernie Bittern in putting Sheppey firmly back on the football map once again.

Belmont Banter (episode 17) The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.

In this edition we catch up with Whitstable Town’s Josh Algar who has run WTFC Academy for the last four years. Josh sign for Millwall when he was nine years old where he spent two years before signing for Ebsfleet United at the age of thirteen whilst he was with them he had a number of trials with a number of clubs, the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea before he was offered a two-year contract with Leyton Orient. At the end of the two years he was offered a part in ‘exit trials’ which is where all the scouts attend, but says he was not in the right frame of mind.

After a two-year spell at Maidstone United, Josh then joined Whitstable Town under the Ward brothers before going on to play for a number of local clubs. He then decided that his business which was beginning to take off he chose to concentrate on the business of running his Academy, firstly with ex-chairman Joe Brownett then with current chairman Steve Clayton.

In this edition we catch up with Whitstable Town’s Darryl Farley who is the Youth Development Officer at Whitstable Town. Darryl talks enthusiastically about how he is also the WTFC U13s manager and often struggles to find time to get to 1st Team games at The Belmont given the amount of time he spends on youth matters. On top of the twenty or so youth teams at WTFC that Darryl has overall responsibility for, he has also been helping to set up the U7’s who, like all the youth teams at Whitstable, have some cracking players.

Talking about his own early experiences of playing football; he says that he lived on the Isle of Sheppey and at the age of 16 he played for three different teams over the course of the weekend.
