Bend resident Rue McKenrick wants to create a hiking trail that connects the contiguous United States. According to McKenrick, the American Perimeter Trail will be more than 14,000 miles long once it’s developed. He set out last year to hike the whole thing and made it about 10,000 miles before weather conditions and health problems forced him to come back to Bend. He was diagnosed with overtraining syndrome and spent a few months recuperating. Now, he’s heading back to North Dakota to pick up where he left off and hike the remainder of the trail he hopes will be nationally recognized one day. McKenrick joins us to talk about the triumphs and challenges he’s encountered on his journey.
