Mike Mulligan and David Haugh conducted their daily "5 at 5" segment, which began with a discussion about Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein's comments Saturday in which he deflected blame for his team's 2-7 start from owner Tom Ricketts, manager Joe Maddon and pitching coach Tommy Hottovy and instead held himself accountable. The guys then had a discussion about what the biggest reason for optimism is regarding the start to the White Sox's season before sharing their respective picks for who will win the national championship game between Virginia and Texas Tech on Monday evening. The morning crew also shared whether attorney Michael Avenatti's allegation that Nike paid Zion Williamson's mother to get her son to go to Duke has spoiled the college basketball season for them. The guys then closed the segment out with a discussion about what the Blackhawks' biggest areas of need are as the team heads into the offseason and debated whether fans should be encouraged by the progress in the second half of the season or angry about the team missing the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

After missing the playoffs for the second straight season, the Blackhawks cleaned out their lockers Sunday. Despite the disappointing campaign, general manager Stan Bowman kept an optimistic tone. "We showed progress from a year ago until today, and we expect progress again going forward," Bowman said. "We sort of look at it on a couple-year horizon. Last year was sort of the low point. We're building to where we are now, and next year we expect to be even higher. We're on the right path."
