Linalyl acetate, a key component in many essential oils, is the focus of this episode. We explore its chemistry, particularly how it's structurally similar to linalool with the addition of an acetate group. This session also highlights how linalyl acetate differs across oils like Lavender and Petitgrain, enhancing our understanding of essential oil reports. Join us for insights on crafting aromatic blends.

    In this episode:

    • Linalyl acetate combines linalool with acetic acid, forming an ester.
    • Lavender GC/MS reports may show linalyl acetate leading over linalool.
    • Different oils have varying linalyl acetate content, such as Clary Sage.
    • Understanding batch variability in chemotypes enriches blending skills.
    • Using any blender type works for whipping body butter effectively.

  • Essential Oil Chemistry 101: Blends, Basics & Beyond (Series Introduction)

*Recorded live with our community as the Lesson 0 kickoff to our six-week Essential Oil Chemistry 101 series.*

This is Lesson 0 β€” the orientation session that kicks off our six-week Essential Oil Chemistry 101: Blending with Confidence series inside The Natural Living Lab. Before we start blending molecule by molecule over the coming weeks, Jenny sets the stage with the aromatherapy foundations that make everything else click: what's actually inside a bottle of essential oil, how to read (and trust) your oils, and how to dilute safely so you get results without overdoing it.

If you've ever wondered why lavender calms you down β€” or wanted to move past "I love the smell of orange, let's try that" and blend with real intention β€” this is where the whole journey begins.

    In this episode:

    • An essential oil is never just one ingredient. Every bottle holds dozens β€” sometimes hundreds β€” of chemical components. Lavender's calming softness, for example, comes largely from two of them: linalool and linalyl acetate (our Week 1 and Week 3 components).
    • Chemotypes & why growing conditions matter. Same plant, different elevation or environment = a different chemical fingerprint (look for the "CT" in the Latin name β€” basil, rosemary, and thyme are classic examples).
    • GC/MS reports, demystified. What Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry testing tells you, why batch-specific reports matter (especially in clinical settings), and why you don't have to understand every line to use one.
    • Dilution made simple. The 1% / 2% / 3% guideline (β‰ˆ6 / 12 / 18 drops per ounce), where beginner-to-intermediate blending should live, and the rule of thumb: almost always dilute (inhalers and diffusers are the exception).
    • Carriers as more than a base. How aloe + argan + a single drop of lavender rescued a sunburn β€” and why single-origin, small-batch oils and carriers let you dial in quality.
    • Shelf life starts at distillation, not when the bottle lands on your doorstep β€” and why monoterpene-rich oils don't last as long as sesquiterpene-rich ones.
    • A quick true/false quiz to test what you know going in (and again coming out).

The series roadmap (live workshops, Wednesdays):

    • Week 1 β€” Linalool (July 15)
    • Week 2 β€” d-Limonene (July 22)
    • Week 3 β€” Linalyl Acetate (July 29)
    • Week 4 β€” 1,8-Cineole (Aug 5)
    • Week 5 β€” Ξ±-Pinene (Aug 12)
    • Week 6 β€” Ξ²-Caryophyllene (Aug 19)
      • a "next steps" session the following week

Course modules open each Tuesday morning; live blending workshops are Wednesdays; Monday Q&As (with Jenny & Karen) follow each lesson.

  • How to Make Natural Bug Spray with Essential Oils (Skeeter Beater Recipe)

Bugs hunt by scent β€” so the simplest way to avoid bites is to change what you smell like. In this class we blend a Skeeter Beater Bug Spray from scratch: a lively outdoor spray for porches, picnics, and summer evenings, made with the essential oils insects genuinely want to avoid.

    What you'll learn:

    • Which essential oils insects steer clear of, and why
    • Why a water-based spray needs a dispersant β€” and how Solubol blends the oils through the water instead of letting them float on top
    • How to build a bug spray step by step
    • Why there's no preservative in a spray like this, and how to keep it fresh
    • Who this blend isn't for, and how to keep it away from faces

The Recipe: Skeeter Beater Bug Spray
Makes ~4 fl oz (120 ml) Β· Beginner Β· 10 minutes Β· Recipe by Karen Williams

    • 20 drops Citronella Java (Cymbopogon winterianus)
    • 20 drops Lemongrass ct Rhodinol (Cymbopogon flexuosus)
    • 10 drops Peppermint (Mentha Γ— piperita)
    • 5 drops Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides)
    • 220 drops (9 ml) Solubol dispersant
    • 100 ml Yarrow Hydrosol (Achillea millefolium)

Add the Solubol and essential oils to a 4 oz spray bottle and swirl gently. Pour in the yarrow hydrosol, cap tightly, and shake well. Label with the name and date. Notes: no preservative, so make small batches and mix a fresh bottle every 2–3 weeks. Because of the peppermint, keep this one off little ones and away from faces.

If you've ever copied an essential oil recipe and just hoped you were doing it right, this episode is your foundation. We walk through the core building blocks of safe, effective aromatherapy so you can stop guessing and start blending with confidence.

    What you'll learn:

    • How much essential oil is actually safe β€” why dilution matters and how to think in percentages, not just drops
    • How to choose the right carrier oil for different applications
    • Why a plant's part, cultivation, harvest, and distillation all shape its chemistry and therapeutic value
    • Phototoxicity made simple β€” what it is (those furanocoumarins in many citrus oils), and why it's mostly citrus but not always: sweet orange and steam-distilled lime are safe, while cold-pressed lime, grapefruit, and even angelica root are phototoxic
    • How to read a product page for safety β€” safety & shelf life, GC/MS batch reports, and why ethical, high-quality sourcing changes everything

We finish by formulating a simple everyday blend together, working through dilution and carrier choice live

  • Carrier Oils with Confidence: Choosing the Right Carrier Oil for Every Essential Oil Blend

From our live class archives. This episode was originally recorded as a live blending session with the Natural Living Club community β€” so you'll hear questions, recipes made in real time, and a few "watch my screen" moments. We've pulled together everything you need below so you can follow along by ear.

πŸ“ A quick heads-up: this class was recorded live during one of our holiday sales, so you'll hear mentions of limited-time deals β€” our Memorial Day sale, free gifts with purchase, and weekly giveaways. Those promotions have since ended, but we always have fresh deals waiting for you in our Sale Bin: https://www.aromatics.com/collections/on-sale

Ever stood in front of jojoba, rosehip, and sweet almond and wondered which one your blend actually needs? This session walks you through how to choose the carrier that best supports your skin, your climate, and the essential oils you're working with β€” and we make two carrier-only recipes along the way.

    What you'll learn:

    • Why carrier oils are far more than "just dilution" β€” they shape skin feel, absorption, shelf life, aroma, and purpose
    • The 4 decision points for choosing a carrier: texture, shelf life, purpose, and formula type (oil, water-based, soap, butter, or balm)
    • The golden shelf-life rule: a blend only lasts as long as its shortest-lived ingredient β€” so a stable base like jojoba can't rescue a blend once the rosehip has turned
    • Why delicate, antioxidant-rich oils (rosehip, pomegranate, cranberry) are best bought small and used fresh
    • Why water-based bases (aloe vera gel, hydrosols) change everything about preservation

    Carrier cheat-sheet from this episode:

    • Jojoba β€” technically a liquid wax, not an oil; closely resembles skin, absorbs easily, very long shelf life. The everyday anchor that stabilizes more delicate oils. If you keep one carrier on your shelf, make it this.
    • Argan β€” lightly nutty, golden, absorbs with no residue. (Megan's 10-year facial cleanser: half argan, half aloe vera.)
    • Rosehip seed β€” light, regenerative, great for facial blends; use at 10% or less.
    • Pomegranate & cranberry seed β€” highly antioxidant and skin-regenerative; a little goes a long way.
    • Trauma Oil β€” three herbal-infused carriers in one (Arnica, St. John's Wort, and Calendula infused into olive oil); a shelf staple for sore muscles, pain, and inflammation, even with no essential oils added.

    Recipes made in this episode:

Whipped Shea & Kombo Butter (yields ~9 oz)

    • 4 oz shea butter
    • 2 oz cocoa butter
    • 2 oz kombo butter
    • 1 fl oz jojoba
    • Melt the shea and cocoa butters in a double boiler. Off heat, stir in the kombo butter and jojoba. Chill/freeze until the top firms, then whip until light and fluffy (about 20–30 min total).

Mature Skin Glow Facial Oil (10 ml bottle)

    • 7 ml jojoba
    • 1.5 ml argan
    • 1 ml rosehip seed
    • 0.5 ml pomegranate (or cranberry) seed
    • Combine and stir. Soaks in beautifully with no oily residue β€” lovely as an evening facial oil.
