The Apostle Peter, in a response to the critics’ mockery of the tongue speaking at Pentecost, recites the book of Joel to reference a prophecy that was being fulfilled in their midst that very moment.

Today, we’ll go back to the Book of Joel to look closer at this prophecy and what was fulfilled in Acts 2.

As we read last Sunday, the Spirit has just been poured out upon a group of Christians gathered on the Day of Pentecost. Ruckus ensues and people from all areas of the world are now hearing the gospel proclaimed in their own tongue. Some in the crowd don’t understand what’s going on and immediately begin to blame it on “new wine”.

In today’s passage, we’ll be looking at the Apostle Peter’s address to all who are gathered there to explain what had just occurred.

Today we tackle a chapter in the Bible that has been more commented on in the last 50 years than any other time in history. Consequently, Christians from all walks of denominations love to speculate as to what happens in Acts 2. However, I think we tend to look over what actually takes place... God shows up!

It’s not uncommon to turn to any number of religious channels on the television and hear someone address themselves as “Apostle”. What qualification does someone have to give themselves that title? Is it still an active role in the church today?

In today’s passage, we read of Jesus ascension into heaven as he is taken away from his disciples via a cloud. What does the Lord want us to glean from this recorded narrative?

While the Gospels concentrate on Jesus’ ministry on earth, the ascension defines the book of Acts as Christ’s work from heaven. Jesus has an established agenda for the Church in light of His return to finish His kingdom work.

Our agenda before His return? To be His witnesses unto the ends of the earth.
