    Less is More

    Matthew 6:16 – 18

Verse of the Week: “Return to Me with all your heart, and with
fasting…rend your heart and not your garments.” Joel 2:12 & 13
    1. Fasting is about us pursuing God.
“As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs for You.” Ps. 42:1
“The days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them,
and then shall they fast.” Matthew 9:15

    2. Fasting positions us…

    •  To hear God’s voice.
    • “Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and,

with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they
had put their trust.” Acts 14:23
“this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything
according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us,
whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we
      desired of Him” 1 John 5:14 & 15

      • To be used by God.
      • “While the church at Antioch were ministering to the Lord and

fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for
the work to which I have called them.’” Acts 13:2
“Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the
devil. For forty days and forty nights Jesus fasted” Matthew 4:1 & 2
“I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground”
        Isaiah 44:3

        GENEROUS GRACE GIVING

        March 1, 2026 Elwyn Johnston

        2 Corinthians 8:1 – 9

Verse of the Week: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
        Acts 20:35
        1. We are called to be contributors, not simply consumers.

“They are being tested by many troubles, and they are extremely

poor. But they are also filled with abundant joy, which has overflowed
in rich generosity.” 2 Corinthians 8:2
“their first action was to give themselves to the Lord” 2 Cor. 8:5
“They begged us again and again for the privilege of sharing in the gift
for the believers in Jerusalem.” 2 Corinthians 8:4

        2. We are called to be Christ’s representatives

“Now I want you to know, dear brothers and sisters, what God in His
grace has done through the churches in Macedonia.”
        2 Corinthians 8:1
“You are the light of the world….let your light shine before others, that
they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
        Matthew 5:14 & 16
“I am testing the sincerity of your love” 2 Corinthians 8:8
“where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21

        3. We are called to eternal-minded giving

“we have urged Titus, who encouraged your giving in the first place,
to return to you and encourage you to finish this ministry of giving.”

        2 Corinthians 8:6

“excel also in this gracious act of giving.” 2 Corinthians 8:7

“It would be good for you to finish what you started a year ago. Last
year you were the first who wanted to give, and you were the first to
begin doing it. Now finish what you started. Let the eagerness you
showed in the beginning be matched now by your giving.”
        2 Corinthians 8:10 & 11
“My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.”
        John 4:34
“You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though He
was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that by His poverty
He could make you rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9
“generous people plan to do what is generous, and they stand firm in
        their generosity.” Isaiah 32:8
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35

“As the Father has sent Me, I am sending you” John 20:21

you at that time, for it is not you will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit.”

          Acts 8:26 - 40

Verse of the Week: “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is
due, when it is in your power to do it.” Proverbs 3:27

          1. Positioned by the Spirit

“Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, ‘Get up and go

south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ (This is a
          desert road.)” Acts 8:26
“We can make our plans, but the Lord directs our steps.”
          Proverbs 16:9

even though he did not know where he was going.” Hebrews 11:8

            Deuteronomy 6

Verse of the Week: “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in
vain who build it.” Psalm 127:1
            1. Make your foundation solid
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your
soul and with all your might.” Deuteronomy 6:5
“We love Him because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
“in Christ you have been made complete, and He is the head over all
            rule and authority” Colossians 2:10
“If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for
the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love
God whom he has not seen.” 1 John 4:20

            2. Build daily on the foundation
“teach God’s words diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when
you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie
down and when you rise up.” Deuteronomy 6:7
“write them on the doorposts of your house” Deuteronomy 6:9

            3. Leave a building that lasts
“you are the temple of the Holy Spirit” 1 Corinthians 6:19
“In the future your children will ask you, ‘What is the meaning of these
laws, decrees, and regulations that the Lord our God has commanded
us to obey?’ Then you must tell them, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in
Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his strong hand. The
Lord did miraculous signs and wonders before our eyes, dealing
terrifying blows against Egypt and Pharaoh and all his people. He
brought us out of Egypt to bring us in’” Deuteronomy 6:20 – 23

            Take Us Deeper Part 1

            January 18, 2026 Elwyn Johnston

            Colossians 1: 9 & 10; Psalm 51

Verse of the Week: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a
steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10

            1. Going deeper begins with repentance

            • Sin is first a heart issue
            • “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit
              within me.” Psalm 51:10
            • Repentance begins with honesty and humility.
            • “The sacrifice You desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a
broken and repentant heart, O God.” Psalm 51:17
“Search me O God and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts,
and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way
              everlasting.” Psalm 139:23 & 24
“all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23
            • Repentance is not about shame. It is about freedom.
            • “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ
Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Romans 8:1
“When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I
groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy
on me. My vitality was drained away” Psalm 32:3 & 4
“Oh, what joy for those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is
put out of sight….what joy for those whose record the Lord has
              cleared of iniquity” Psalm 32:1 & 2
            • God cleanses what we are willing to confess.
            • “I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide; I said, ‘I
will confess my transgressions to the Lord;’ and You forgave” Ps 32:5
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
“Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” Psalm 51:7

“O God, You are my God; I will seek You earnestly; my soul thirsts for

              no water.” Psalm 63:1
“When You said, ‘Seek My face,’ my heart said to You, ‘Your face, O
LORD, I will seek.’” Psalm 27:8
“You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”
              Jeremiah 29:13
“Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God” Dt. 8:11
“when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:10

              2. Sustained through worship

“I have seen You in the sanctuary” Psalm 63:2
“Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips will praise
You. So I will bless You as long as I live; I will lift up my hands in Your
              name.” Psalm 63:3 & 4
“I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be on my
              lips.” Psalm 34:1
“you are to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your
soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12:30
“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these
things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33

              3. Strengthened in the private place

“When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night
watches, for You have been my help, and in the shadow of Your
wings I sing for joy. My soul clings to You” Psalm 63:6 - 8
"God will keep in perfect peace those whose mind is stayed on Him,
because they trust in Him.” Isaiah 26:3

              trouble.” Psalm 46:1
