  • Surviving the Shift Pt. 3

    Surviving the Shift part 3

    May 10, 2026 Elwyn Johnston

    Daniel 1

Verse of the Week: “And Daniel continued until the first year of
    Cyrus the king.” Daniel 1:21
    1. Remind yourself that God is still in control
    2. Reject reprogramming
    3. Make a decision before you have to.
“The king assigned them a daily ration of food” Daniel 1:5

    • Decide who and whose you are, then it will direct what you do.
    • “Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with
the king’s choice food” Daniel 1:8
    • Decide your convictions in community, not in isolation.
    • “Please test your servants” Daniel 1:12
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their
labor; if either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity
anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” Eccl.4:9 & 10
    • Decide that short-term costs are worth long-term rewards.
    • “By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son
of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with
the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.” Hebrews 11:24 & 25
“In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” Psalm 16:11

“I waited patiently for the Lord, and He turned to me and heard my

      cry.” Psalm 40:1
“be patient as you wait for the Lord’s return. Consider the farmers
who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring.”
      James 5:7

      • Decide that God is faithful, even when the outcome is uncertain.
      • “If we are unfaithful, God remains faithful, for He cannot deny who
        He is.” 2 Timothy 2:13
“The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you
were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the
fewest of all peoples, but because the Lord loved you and He was
keeping the oath that He had sworn to your ancestors. Know
therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who
keeps His covenant and lavishes His unfailing love to a thousand
        generations.” Deuteronomy 7:7 - 9
“I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat
on it is called Faithful and True” Revelation 19:11

        Daniel 1:4
“God’s word is truth.” John 17:17
“the commander of the officials assigned new names to them; and to
Daniel he assigned the name Belteshazzar” Daniel 1:7

        • “Daniel” – God is my Judge
        • “Belteshazzar” – Bel protects the king
        • “be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing

          of your mind” Roman 12:2

          1. Remind yourself that God is still in control

“And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along
with some of the articles of the house of God” Daniel 1:2
“we know that God causes all things to work together for good to

“highly respected….also a valiant warrior, but he was a leper.”
          2 Kings 5:1
“the Aramean raiders had invaded the land of Israel, and among
their captives was a young girl who had been given to Naaman’s
wife as a maid. One day the girl said…‘I wish my master would go to
see the prophet in Samaria. He would heal him of his leprosy.’”
          2 Kings 5:2 & 3

those who take refuge in Him.” Nahum 1:7

                John 21:1 – 19

Verse of the Week: “Follow Me!” John 21:19

                1. Don’t run away from your failures

“Simon Peter said to some of the apostles, ‘I am going fishing.’”
                John 21:3
"the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter….And Peter went out
                and wept bitterly.” Luke 22:61 & 62
“We will also come with you.” John 21:3

                2. Run to God, not from God

“At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t
see who He was.” John 21:4
“Then the disciple Jesus loved [John] said to Peter, ‘It’s the Lord!’
When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he…jumped into the
water, and headed to shore.” John 21:7
“do you love Me more than these?” John 21:15

                3. Re-engage in service

                Matthew 28:1 - 7

                1. God’s plans > your dreams
“bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body.”
                Mark 16:1

                2. Your problem may be big, but our God is bigger.

“they came to the tomb….They were saying to one another, ‘Who
will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?’
Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although
it was extremely large” Mark 16:2 & 3
“an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled
away the stone and sat upon it.” Matthew 28:2

                3. Don’t forget the words in red

“the women remembered Jesus’ words” Luke 24:8
                “God cannot lie” Titus 1:2

                4. Before You get there, Jesus is already there!

“Jesus is going ahead of you into Galilee, there you will see Him”
                Matthew 28:7
“I am the Light of the World.” John 8:12

“Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when Jesus

                He was.” John 11:5 & 6

                2. Bring your unedited self to God

the Son of God may be glorified by it.” John 11:4

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens,
and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you,
because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for
                your souls.” Matthew 11:28 & 29
“My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Psalms 22:1

                lying against it.” John 11:38
“Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come forth.’” Jn. 11:43

                4. Help unwrap someone’s comeback

are white for harvest.” John 4:35
                1. God has called us to carry people
“they came, bringing to Jesus a paralytic, carried by four men.”
                Mark 2:3

“lift up your eyes and look on the fields, for they are white for harvest.”

“when you did it to one of the least of these…you were doing it to Me!”
                Matthew 25:40

                2. God has called us to continual persistence

“Being unable to get to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the
                roof” Mark 2:4
“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and

                  March 8, 2026 Elwyn Johnston

                  Matthew 6:16 – 18

Verse of the Week: “Return to Me with all your heart, and with
fasting…rend your heart and not your garments.” Joel 2:12 & 13
                  1. Fasting is about us pursuing God.
“As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs for You.” Ps. 42:1
“The days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them,
and then shall they fast.” Matthew 9:15

                  2. Fasting positions us…

                  •  To hear God’s voice.
                  • “Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and,

with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they
had put their trust.” Acts 14:23
“this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything
according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us,
whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we
                    desired of Him” 1 John 5:14 & 15

                    • To be used by God.
                    • “While the church at Antioch were ministering to the Lord and

fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for
the work to which I have called them.’” Acts 13:2
“Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the
devil. For forty days and forty nights Jesus fasted” Matthew 4:1 & 2
“I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground”
