And so we reach the end of another sandwich odyssey. From po’boys to cubans, we’ve come a long way from that dodgy Subway pilot episode so it would be rude not to end the season with another blockbuster ‘wich. That’s right, its time we talked about Sub Cult. We’ve been eyeing up these award winning subs for a while and, with their first brick and mortar store opening to unprecedented demand, we just had to saunter down to St. Pauls to get our hands on one. For our season finale you can expect nothing but drama, intense mayo debate and a half-baked sandwich trivia loser’s forfeit.

We’re reaching the end of Season 2, so its only reasonable we start throwing out the big hitters from London’s sandwich scene. This time, we snuck down to Bodega Rita’s in Coal Drops Yard, London’s latest Instagram ready shopping district (there are far too many fountains here), to take on their popular Friday Sandwich Meal Deal. Inspired by New York’s thriving global deli and sandwich scene, these guys are really pushing the flavour boundaries so we were excited to see what they’d conjured up.

It's the big one, a real heavyweight B2S title contender. For episode 17 we finally got our act together and ventured down to Finsbury Park to visit Max's critically acclaimed sandwich institution. Known for his quirky, ballsy and inventive recipes, Max is seen as a sandwich pioneer, the Steve Jobs of sandwich creation if you will, so we've been itching to see if his menu lives up to the hype.

Episode 15 sees us head North (to Islington) only to go South… Deep South to a Louisiana inspired gastro-pub. Plaquemine Lock sits quaintly by the Regents Canal and has been serving up authentic Louisiana inspired cajun food for a good few years now. It was recently awarded a Michelin Bib (me neither) and is one of the few places in London where you can sample an authentic seafood Po’boy. We’ve given fish a miss for a while now on B2S so we were excited to take on our first fish-wich and what a place to start (FRIED OYSTERS AND GRAVY!)
This pub was turquoise AF! Check out our Plaquemine Po’boy pics on Instagram: @between2slices.
With Deeney’s setting the toastie bar high last season, it's fair to say our next contender to the toastie thrown has a lot of work to do. However, this isn’t a normal toastie, this is an XXL stovetop 3 cheese wonder, hand crafted by chefs at one of London’s most prestigious hotels. When B2S headed to the Wigmore, a posh pub decked in emerald green interiors at the Langham Hotel, we were ready to tackle a gourmet monster. If you like melted cheese analysis, you cannot miss this.

Our second salt beef voyage (see ep 5 for the first) took us to Monty’s Deli in Hoxton, a place so good its been likened to the iconic New York pastrami institution Katz’s Deli. This place has been dishing out critically acclaimed mixed meat Reubens for years now so its only fair we finally chalked it off our list. You’ll be pleased to know Sam didn’t fake an unnecessarily loud orgasm at the table (in true When Harry Met Sally fashion) but the pickles certainly roused him.

Episode 12 sees us size up our first Cuban sandwich at Papi’s Kitchen in Soho. We walk past this stall on Rupert Street almost every day and the smells, coupled with the lengthy queues, piqued our interest. Owned by the charismatic Cleb Mendonca, this place has only been up and running for a matter of months but comfortably outshines the competition at ‘Street Food Union Market’ with its mouth watering Cuban concoctions. This guy has worked hard to perfect his recipe (he legit cycles across London every day to pick up fresh bread) so we were excited to put his signature ‘El Cubano’ to the test!
