Between You & Me

This morning John Latimer asked DNR Bee Specialist Crystal Boyd "what is THE single easiest, most important thing that any of us could do to increase or help out our pollinators. Crystal said "Plant local native wildflowers....if you provide it they will come!" She also told us about a great resource Bumble Bee Watch , where citizen scientists (that's you!) can post photos and get help with identification. Check out the MN DNR's resources for pollinators as well.

Program 30: Schools, Edna Murphy, Prohibition, Growth of Civic Pride in 1916 A radio series produced by historian Don Boese. Don is the author of eight books dealing with local history in Itasca County, including "John C. Greenway and the Opening of the Western Mesabi", and the main source for this series, "Papermakers: the Blandin Paper Company and Grand Rapids, Minnesota". The series begins with the arrival of the first Euro-Americans to the forested wilderness of Itasca County in the 1870s.

Northern Minnesota is rich in arts experiences and August is overflowing with arts action. Photography exhibits, open mic music opportunities, artist talks, opportunities to attend world class orchestra and chamber music, a call for wearable art, and outdoor yoga accompanied by a cellist are all part of this report.

Heidi and John spoke with Katie Marshall from the MacRostie Arts Center in Grand Rapids this morning. Lots going on around Grand Rapids arts scene this First Friday. Jason Helstrom's pastures have so much grass "we don't know what to do with it." It's the result of a grazing practice he uses on Helstrom Farm in Hibbing that mimics the eating, trampling and fertilizing actions of the thousands of bison that built the great prairies of this country as they followed the grass through the seasons. Jason and his wife Charity are the 5th generation on Helstrom Farm , which was founded by Jason's great-great grandfather, Jacob, who immigrated to the United States

The people of South Sudan have faced tragedy, trauma, some hope andmuch despair. David McDonald knows this first hand and he's had the privilege of getting to know many South Sudanese first hand. He's worked around the globe as an international news journalist, an independent multimedia producer, a teacher, a Peace Corps Volunteer, and a writer. His recent work as a humanitarian journalism trainer for the people of South Sudan made him instrumental in setting up South Sudan's first community
