History: Bridgette Starr, Matildas Cap 80
Starr was a defender who made her Matildas debut in 1994, playing 53 A internationals (1 goal) and 6 Non-A internationals.
She was the first indigenous footballer to represent Australia at a World Cup (1999) and at the Olympic Games (2000). Starr is also a member of the Aboriginal and Islander Sports Hall of Fame.
Former Matildas Team Manager, B90 co-founder and expert friend of the pod Sarah Groube had this to stay about Starr:
"Legend! Bridgette was one of the many strong left footers of that era, playing mainly in the backline and strongly pushing up the field. As a Novocastrian she had a strong playing relationship with Cheryl Salisbury. Bridgette went on to play AFL where she was outstanding with ACT and was selected to a number of all-star teams. She’s now an extraordinarily fit cross-fitter. Her Mum Wendy was one of the many brilliant Matilda mums who set a strong legacy of parental support which continues today, travelling to tournaments where she could."
