Today we will shoot for the stars and maybe shoot some bugs as we talk about the 1997 film Starship Troopers. The movie is based on the 1959 novel Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein. In this episode, Mustache Chris and I will talk about some of the big themes about society and humanity that this film and movie bring up. They are universal themes that director Paul Verhoeven and author Robert Heinlein took in very different directions.

Thank you for joining me again on Beyond the Big Screen. I am really excited to be joined by author Craig w Stanfield to talk about all things artificial intelligence, dystopian futures, and defiance in a heavily controlled world. Uh, before we get started, uh, Craig, can you tell us a bit about your background and what made you want to write, uh, fiction, particularly science fiction?
Okay, well first of all, in terms of my background, I've got a long history of, uh, work as a technologist, as a software entrepreneur. Got a doctorate in computer science, artificial intelligence in the 1980s. I've had a long career in the technology industry, primarily, you know, starting out with artificial intelligence and then moving forward into enterprise computing where I've worked on technology that is used to collect and analyze data for marketing purposes for a lot of [00:02:00] very, very big companies that are, uh, household names around the country.

What you will hear in this episode is a sample from Josh Cohen's fantastic new show Eyewitness History, where he speaks with the witnesses of the most important events in living memory.

In this episode, Josh speaks with the former principal of Columbine High School, Frank DeAngelis. Frank and Josh discuss the events of the tragic shooting, what the police were doing at the time of the shooting, as well as the potential motivations of the two shooters, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. They also discuss the infamous basement tapes, as well as seeing Klebold the previous week at prom, in addition to a lot more.
